With the Gatekeeper post now out of the way http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/814499.html

We can now move on to why you have been injuring your F5 finger over the last couple hours. Who is going to be eliminated this week.

Of course we know that [livejournal.com profile] eska818 sacrificed, taking up one of those 8-12 spots.

I'm going to just post the names in a moment, but before I do, I want to take a moment to thank of those leaving this evening for writing their asses off for 30 weeks (in some cases less because of Last Chance, but still, it hasn't been easy and you absolutely deserve to have made it to this point!) Thank you for being awesome and I hope that we will continue to see you around the Home Game and hanging out in the Green Room cheering on your favorites, or just relaxing now that you have the time. ;)

With that said. I'm taking a deep breathe and posting the results. It's always sad to lose people... OK, I said I was actually going to POST... so here it is...

Oh yeah, totally forgot to mention this: WELCOME TO THE JURY!! Where, every week until I announce otherwise, you will be voting on who gets immunity!!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
We are waiting for the Gatekeepers to come to their final decisions, but that's not reason to sit around and do nothing. There are still entries to be read! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811500.html

There are some who say "Well, it doesn't count for anything!"

It counts for *you reading something cool*! It counts for you being able to legitimately say "Man, I LOVED that entry! What were they thinking????" or maybe you will be the one who will comment to the entry and a Gatekeeper will read it and say "You know what, they have a good point!!"

So really it's all in your hands right now!

(Well, OK, it's still not "in your hands", but there's always larger forces of voters out there. This is just another version of that.)

So get out there and READ AND COMMENT!!

and then come back here and tell people what THEY should be reading - what awesome things are they missing in Idol-land this week?

***

I don't know if you saw it or not, but in the comments yesterday I asked if there was anyone interested in doing BETA TESTING for Livejournal. Be the first to test drive the changes to the site! Just send me an email and let me know if you are, and I will forward your information to them!

***

To pull a Jeff Probst - who among you feels "safe" this week? Who thinks they are in danger?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Some days, it just takes one comment for everything to dovetail right into each other, and make a lot of things snap into place mentally for you.

In this case, it was one from yesterday where someone doubted their own qualifications to offer concrit over at the Killing Floor: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811580.html

The responses to it were great - but I just want to add one of my own: You are here because you love to write, as well as read. As someone who does both - you have something to offer.

Maybe it won't be the "This sentence would work better if you did X to it" or "drop this section". But you can say "This part didn't quite work for me" and offer insights into why you felt that way.

You have something to offer.

***

Which brought me back to all of the times over the years (from pre-Idol right up to earlier this season) when there has been someone overly critical of the work of others. It's easy to tear things down. It's much more difficult to see the potential in something that's not quite there, and figure out a way to help that person "get it there".

That's a fight I've been involved in all of my life. Trying to get people to understand that they have something to say that's *worth hearing*.

For all of the people over the years who have advocated restricting Idol and who should be allowed to compete, or who was "wasting our time" (something I've definitely heard from some corners) it's the people who have been struggling, but then make a breakthrough, even if it's just a minor one - those are the people that I love seeing, that I love helping.

The Idol process can make good writers even better. Part of that process is seeing people of all sorts of backgrounds and skill levels side by side, working together toward that goal.

Everyone has something to offer.

I believed it then. I believe it now.

***

Which brought me to thinking back on how many years I ignored the cries "We want Idol merchandise!" and the "Allow us to give you money!!!" because I didn't think I was worth it. There are tons of great causes out there, and people doing good things. I didn't see myself as one of them, despite all of the emails I would get telling me what a "life changing experience" Idol was.

I'm finally at a point in my life that I've decided "What the hell" and am starting to see if there is actually a market for that kind of stuff. (Of course, if I had done it back in Season 3 and 4, I probably could have made a lot more. :D But I wasn't ready for it, and honestly, it would have led to more problems then as well, because of that)

The modifications to the Menu now work - all the links go where they are supposed to go.

The T-shirt is also available: http://teespring.com/LJIdol

Of course, I thought of a bunch of ways I could have made it better (and then did a mock up of it, and it would have increased the price of the shirt to about $15 instead of $11) but I'm going to continue with this run. (10 shirts ordered is what is needed to make the run, and we have 4 orders in less than 24 hours) If nothing else, you can say you have a "first run of the Idol shirts". :)

I needed the confidence in myself in order to get to this point. Of course that has a momentary blip whenever I have a "Why do you need money?" response. :D But fortunately, I haven't gotten very much of those... I think it's pretty obvious why anyone "needs money". ;)

As I should - Idol is something that I believe in. Always have. Always will. We are doing great things here.

***

Which brings me to "What we are doing here" - which is waiting for the Gatekeepers to render their decision.

Some people are going to be really happy. Some are going to be sad.

But everyone who has reached this point - however they got here, should be proud of themselves. You have something to offer, and I hope that, regardless of the outcome, you keep on offering it!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Good morning!

Or maybe that's just me.

Why is everyone else looking like they are waiting for a bus to hit them? ;)

Oh, yeah - the Vote going on right now: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/813319.html

Just relax. Check out the entries - read and comment. You never know who could be reading what you have to say. Silently judging you. ;)

Definitely get on over to the Killing Floor - where there are additional entries that have been posted for your constructive criticism: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811580.html That would definitely be a good use of your time!

***

Once all of that is done though, take a look at the site. Our Friends at SUP have been busy.

We now have the "Popular Entries" widget, where I add "Things you need to know". Right now it's those two links and the FAQs. I need a better term than "Popular Entries", so if you have one, feel free to offer suggestions.

Also, the Menu has changed. The Calendar and the Menu are still accessible from the Profile page, but I've never really understood why most community members would need to use those on a regular basis anyway. For the moment, I've replaced them with links to the Idol Store (for all of your holiday shopping needs) and the Patreon page. But if you have any good suggestions - let me know. (or more "theme names" for them. I think the "Be a Patron" fits pretty well though. :D)

I say "for the moment" because I'm not sure what else people might like to have available.

I'm not sure how I feel about what they did with the tags. Maybe it will grow on me.

Yeah, I know it's an incredibly meta Green Room. But there are a lot of folks who love meta. So this one is for you!

What's been new and exciting in your life? (other than the sheer fear of the Gatekeepers!)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

This week was all about the choices we make: YOU had to choose between picking one of your “Favorite” entries and writing a brand new piece with the topic “Critical Hit”.

Some decided on one route. Others took a different one.

But that’s what is so great about making choices isn’t it? It’s the Choose Your Own Adventure book of life. You make it, and then you just keep going as one choice leads you into the next one.

You made yours.

One of you actually made the choice to sacrifice this week. Which is unfortunate. But I know Real Life has a way of doing that to people.

It’s a shame though, she’s going to miss the fun.

Good luck to all of you.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The topic is due today: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811500.html
along with the Home Game/Killing Floor entry: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811580.html

So make sure you have those in?

If you haven't - you are on the LIST OF SHAME!!http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/812992.html

The Internet says that you can't shame people anymore - but we're doing it anyway!! TAKE YOUR SHAME!!!!

***

There was a really good idea that came up out of the shame, for people to act as each other's resources: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/812992.html?thread=78115008#t78115008 You should definitely check that out and add your own areas of expertise!

Now, I have a surprise for you - because I don't usually go around saying "Go check out this group" - and really, when you do, just make sure you come right back here to hang out again. :)

But if you get the chance, you might want to pop your head over to the LJ group [livejournal.com profile] little_details. Consider it "In the spirit of Livejournal harmony" gesture. :) Some of you already know about it. But for those who don't - tell them LJ Idol sent you! :)

***

What was your biggest accomplishment this weekend?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
There is approximately 24 hours left until deadline and the following people have yet to post - thus ensuring themselves on being on the List of Shame!!

Luna would approve. :)

However, no one will approve if you don't make it to the starting line on time!

So make sure to get your entries in! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811500.html

ALL IN
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I saw a post last night that had the usual political nonsense about someone they didn't like with the question attached "Is this true?"

(1) It was something completely ridiculous. So, no, probably not true and you could probably reason that out for yourself

and

(2) Why not look it up for yourself?

If you stop and go "Man, that's messed up!" for long enough to want to post a meme making a outlandish claim - why not take the time to actually find out more details! Maybe it *is* true, and then you could use the source material to shut down the arguments of your disbelieving friends.

Now, I would say that this is a call for rational thought process, or doing your research.

But that's not what's on my mind today. My thoughts have turned to What outlandish stories can you make up about your fellow competitors!! What have they been doing that the world needs to know about? ;)

***

One thing I know they haven't been doing is "submitting their entries". But fortunately, they have until Monday! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811500.html

There is also the Home Game/Killing Floor (The Killing Game?) http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811580.html

and a Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811782.html if you still need to figure things out!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
People have been upset about all of the recent eliminations - and to show that we *have heard you*, we have taken this information to a grand jury. I am confident that they will give a fair hearing to see if charges should be brought against me.

Stay tuned.

Oh wait... they're back already?

No charges are going to be filed. Sorry guys, better luck next time!

***

As for the things that will directly impact your life in the coming days - there is a lot going on here at LJ Idol! Which - does anything more directly impact your life than that? Nope. Those "family" and "friends" are distracting you from what is truly important - fear of being eliminated!!!

The topic is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811500.html with a twist. So make sure you read it.

Part of that twist involves the Home Game/Killing Floor: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811580.html

None of the twist involves the Work Room, but it's always a good place to stick your head in and see what is going through other people's minds at the moment when it comes to writing and general process: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811782.html

***

Look for some site adjustments over the next week. Nothing dramatic, just a few cool new toys. Our Friendly Neighborhood LJ Overlords are in the building, so look presentable! :)

(Note: actually everyone that I've dealt with so far from LJ and SUP have been really nice and helpful. But I can't let a good "LJ Overlords" opportunity go to waste!)

As of Week 29, the entry count is 19,686. Getting closer...
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Last night was busy - so it's a good time for a recap:

There were eliminations: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811064.html
There was a topic, with a twist: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811500.html
There was a Home Game/Killing Floor: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811580.html
and a Work Room to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811782.html

There were also some questions, and since I have the forum right here - and assuming that you are actually paying attention to the Green Room - I'll answer them here. :)

- Do we submit two entries? Yes. One of them is your Favorite entry you have written (so far) this season, and one of them is a new one based on the topic.

- Does it matter which one we submit to the Topic thread and which one we submit to the Home Game/Killing Floor? No. That's entirely your choice.

- Can I just link both of them to one thread? No.

- Can I edit the Favorite piece? It's up to you. If you want to do it, go ahead.

- Does this mean there is twice as much to read? Only if you are admitting that you didn't read their Favorite entries previously. ;) Serious answer: You should probably go back and reread them anyway. Of course, that's still not as many entries to read as there were a few weeks ago.

***

People have been emailing me asking for how they did in the Contestant Only poll. I have been responding to them. Oddly enough, this time has broken the usual pattern. In previous seasons, I have heard more from the "High" vote getters and got to give them good news. This time it seems to have been turned on it's head. I hate giving the bad news - So someone who has good news coming email me! :)

***
Cutting and pasting from yesterday's Green Room, because I would love some more input:

Is there anything from any of these designs that you can see that jump out at you as:

Man, that would be useful to have on Idol!

http://philips-matters.livejournal.com/
http://aprilhenry.livejournal.com/
http://hills.livejournal.com/
http://runaway-408.livejournal.com/
http://therealstanlee.livejournal.com/
http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/

Also - is there anything in general that you have ever thought "Man, I wish we could do that" (from a technical standpoint).

I have the ear of someone who can make it happen. So this is your chance to speak up. :)

Obviously, this isn't a democracy - but pretend that I'm just waiting to hear how bad your ideas are! :P

So far the feedback has been that people like the "Top Commenters" widget and prefer a simpler style.

What are your thoughts on "Tag clouds" and (looking at the Stan Lee one) shifting the links, etc from the left side to the right? (Shifting things to the right seems to be the trend, but it's always kind of bugged me, since it seems to draw your visual attention there instead of what is being said in the most recent post)

The "Featured post" widget could have some merit, if used to highlight Topics and Voting threads. Not sure yet though, which is why I'm soliciting input on this and any other thing you've seen out there that might be "doable" for the site.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
In honor of Week 30, we are doing something a little different this time around.

You have TWO things to do:

Pick your FAVORITE piece that you have written this season AND Write a brand new entry as inspired by the topic

Critical Hit

Here is where your choice comes in: YOU ONLY LINK ONE OF THOSE ENTRIES HERE. The other one is linked to the Home Game/Killing Floor. It doesn't matter which one. Just make sure to label it when you post.

One of them faces the voters. One of them faces constructive criticism of your peers.

Which one will you decide on?

The deadline to have BOTH entries linked is Monday, Dec 8th at 8pm EST

Have fun!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
If you've already read the Topic post http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811500.html, you know what to do here. :)

***

For those *not currently a contestant in the competition* who want to participate though, you can post anything you like. :) A previously written piece, or one based on the topic "Critical Hit"!

The deadline is the same as the topic Monday, Dec 8th at 8pm EST

Have fun!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Decisions, decisions. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811500.html

Do you go with the old familiar or take the risk writing something new?

How do you decide?

Should you write the new piece and decide what you like better? Should you make the decision right away?

There is definitely strategy involved in the decision, as well as some potential insight to be gained into the remaining competitors. :)

Or maybe not! I guess we will see.

***

Where is your brain at with the new topic, and what do you think you have to offer it that no one else can?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Week 30 is finally over. Once the official announcement is made, we will be at our TOP 25. Which means all of the existing special powers are now out of the game (with the exception of the weekly immunity from the Jury), and we are battling it out on the home stretch.

Getting to this point, against a field of competitors so vast, I think that says everything you need to know about the quality of the people leaving us this week.

With one notable exception (and she knows that I’m probably just messing with her, probably) they are all incredibly talented and have helped forge the character of this season. What that says about them, or this season, that’s up to you to decide. ;)

There are definitely some heart-breaking names in the mix, but that’s what happens when you get to this point, with a cut this deep, and when you are only allowed to cast so many votes. That’s when things get changed up, and you end up losing people you would have never expected to be going.

This is certainly no exception.

Before we get to the eliminations though, even though most people know this already, I want to officially announce that [Bad username or site: ”porn_this_way” @ livejournal.com] used her immunity this week.

Also, the Jury cast their votes to give away theirimmunity, and used to save - and yes, it did come into play - baxaphobia! Congratulations Bax!

With that out of the way, all we have left is announcing who is leaving us... the worst part of the week.

Today, we say goodbye to
[livejournal.com profile] armyandleg
[livejournal.com profile] basric
[livejournal.com profile] frecklestars
[livejournal.com profile] jacq22
[livejournal.com profile] minnesattva
[livejournal.com profile] mstrobel (aka the forementioned hippie, who I had to literally force to sign up this season!)

The one bright spot is that they will now be crossing over to join the Jury, to help determine who will receive Immunity every week! As this week proved, that decision can definitely shift some things around as we play the rest of this competition to its conclusion!

Hopefully, we will see them in the Home Game as well!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
There is still time to get in your votes! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/577661.html

Every time I think I have a clear handle on at least half of who will be leaving, another series of votes comes in, and I am forced to re-evaluate that notion! Which makes life that much more exciting, as well as speaking, quite loudly, to the quality of material out there from the remaining contestants!

Given how many potential votes are still out there, I can’t even declare anyone (other than the two saved by special powers, the remaining bye and immunity) as being “safe”! Because who knows what will happen as the deadline gets a little closer!

Other things that require exclamation marks! Because I’m shouting! But without the capital letters! ‘Nuff Said, True Believer!

What’s got YOU exclaiming today???

(speaking of exclaiming - HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO someone who I think it's fair to say is one of everyone's favorite LJ IDOL CONTESTANTS OF ALL TIME - and definitely better than that hack she is related to: HAPPY BIRTHDAY [livejournal.com profile] 04summer_rain04!!)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It’s Day 15 of the “Week That Will Not End” aka Week 30.

The voting is up – so make sure you go over and check it out: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/577661.html and make sure to spread the word to anyone who has participated this season, who might have checked out for whatever reason! It’s their chance to make a mark on how the season is going to work itself out!

***
In the most awkward topic transition of all time – yesterday I found out some news from an old friend/neighbor.

I haven’t talked to her (let’s call her S) in years, she was more of my ex-wife’s friend than mine, at one point they were best friends - but we are on each other’s facebook, and there was a point where, since we lived a couple apartments away from each other for several years, that we saw each other every day…

Her sister also used to live in the same complex. So I didn’t know her as well, but she lived immediately below us… and anyone who has ever lived in an apartment complex knows that means we pretty much lived in each other’s pockets at times.

The sister (let’s call her N) had a daughter that her mother was raising and (when we first met her) was a recovering drug addict. (hence the decision to sign over custody). It’s fair to say that she wasn’t in a good place when we met, but always seemed nice enough.

Over the years, N apparently had her good moments and her bad – but the last time I had heard, was doing “OK”.

S posted yesterday to let people know what had happened over the weekend…

N hanged herself in S’s garage.

I don’t know many more details than that, other than the fact that S was out of town, and that she found the body when she got home.

Part of me wonders how you could make the decision to end it all, especially like that… but I know that I’ve had my own history with at least considering “the options”…

More of me though is angry that – having made that choice – how could you put even more of a burden on someone who has always been there for you, by hanging yourself *in their garage*… S has a pre-teen son who could have easily been the one to find his Aunt… (as if finding *your sister* isn’t a bad enough thing…)

S hasn’t been back to the house since then. She doesn’t know when she will be able to do it.

I can’t even begin to wrap my brain around any of it.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Sitting in the Panera, next to the AA Bible Study Group meeting, I was wondering if everyone was going to make it across the finish line this week.

Maybe it was the prayer circle, or the adherence to the structure of their study guide, or how close their discussion of putting yourself into the hands of a higher power who will bend you to their will - and how closely that matches the conversations of Idol contestants... but I think everyone did pretty damn well!

There were two who decided to be smelly hippies and drop. ;)

They know who they are, but in case they are looking for their names - goodbye to [livejournal.com profile] lawchicky and [livejournal.com profile] rattsu! It’s actually sad to see you go, I was looking forward to torturing you for awhile longer!!

As for the remaining contestants, [livejournal.com profile] jacq22 only finished 5 of the 6 entries, due to her surgery. Considering the timing of the announcement, and the surgery, it fell into that pocket of “No Man’s Land” where I’m honestly not sure if she even saw it posted. So, I’m going to show some mercy, and give her a *shot* at sticking around...

Because voting is going to work a little differently this week. Which, you kind of expected that, now didn’t you?

There are 6 entries from each contestant.

This is a Season contestant only voting round. Which means IF YOU SIGNED UP AND COMPETED DURING THIS SEASON OF LJ IDOL, YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE!!!

(Just make sure to identify yourself)

Send an email to clauderainsrm@gmail.com with your 5 FAVORITE ENTRIES FROM EACH TOPIC! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/574285.html

We will be losing the 6 contestants with the lowest overall selections/scores.

The deadline for people to send me their votes is Thursday, June 21st at 7pm EDT - so, if you haven’t started yet, GET READING!!!

Good luck to everyone!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It's D-Day!!!

Your topics are due, all 6 of them - http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/574285.html

So if you see someone slacking off, and you know they don't have them finished yet, it's time to kick them in the head! Well, you should probably be kicking them in the head anyway... but that's just because... now you actually have a legitimate reason!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Even though it really doesn't feel like "the weekend" to me! Or maybe it does, but the more natural "back to weekend routine" version of the weekend!

It was strange not to wake up in the middle of a campground - and to bacon, pancakes and cheese grits!

What seems strange to you this morning/afternoon/whatever time you get around to reading this?

I've totally cut and pasted the information you need from yesterday's post:

The topic thread (with the #6 topic) is located: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/574285.html

and the work room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/574652.html

and of course the Home Game http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/575725.html

It's cut, for her pleasure!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
To quote Rachel from Big Brother/Amazing Race:

"I'm back, bitches!"

Which is different from quoting Sir Reginald Dwight.

Because I had a good time on vacation, I only added one soft ball of a topic to your list. I had a couple other options, but when you have spent the week in a pop-up camper (yay for A/C!) near one of the best beaches in the country (per Dr Beach. I trust him, he's a doctor!), you tend to walk away with a good attitude. Except toward bugs. Those muthas can die.

Those mothras can also die!

The topic thread (with the #6 topic) is located: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/574285.html

and the work room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/574652.html is right along with it.

Don't forgot the Home Game (or the Motor City) http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/575725.html and all you'd need is music, sweet music, there is music everywhere...
