You've turned the castle upside down, but there is no sign of any activity from the Killer(s).  Are they even still around?  Or are the signs being wiped away from view by sabotage? Could they be in the room with you RIGHT NOW, plotting your doom?

***

But that's not what we are here to talk about. Because there are Killers, and a Wheel to contend with. But the ultimate enemy is always the Poll.

And this week is no exception, taking a partnership down.

Which means it's time to say goodbye to [personal profile] garnigal and [personal profile] tonithegreat

Thank you for coming out and braving the Wheel of Chaos!!

I hope that should it spin in your favorite that you will return!! (and home game until then!!!)

So where were we? I promised to tell you about my trip! Which means I haven't given you a real life update in about a week!

I've been trying to "Say Yes" to the opportunities that are being offered. Which is how, the night before I was going on my trip I ended up at a Glow Gala charity event for the local children's museum.

Me, in a room with a bunch of rich people "dressed up all fancy". My friend Sara had been the Creative Director years ago and based on the all of the staff and Board Members coming up to her during the event is still a "STEM celebrity" in the area from all of her work in teaching and expanding access to STEM education (including having a recurring spot on the news where she lives! She just invested in a STEM bus and will be talking it on the road to various stadiums throughout baseball season. She just made arrangements with the Red Sox to come up... none of that is about ME, but it's cool to see old friends being so successful! It's like if I brought a friend to an Idol Gala!! Or... *thinks*, nope, it would pretty much have to be an Idol Gala! ;)

I'm not sure how much experience anyone here has being in a room with people who are spending thousands of dollars at an auction on a whim. But it's very surreal.

I looked over at one point and realized a few tables away was the CEO of my former company. You know, the person who pulled the trigger on firing me. (Because there was absolutely zero chance that it was done without her approval) After the auction I walked over to say hello. When she realized who was coming toward her, she legitimately looked like a deer in the headlines looking for a place to run. It was a pleasant chat. She gave me a side hug and said it was good to see me, and introduced me to her husband. I told her that I was glad to see that things were going so well with the company now. She seemed relieved when I said that, and relaxed. Maybe this will result in people no longer being pulled into meetings and threatened with disciplinary action just for talking to me!

Anyway, you haven't lived until you see a bunch of white rich people dancing to 80s and 90s hip hop. That incompatible image is one you can't unsee. :)

Anyway, so I didn't get back to the house until after midnight. My flight to Dallas was at 7:20. I slept for a couple hours. Literally a couple hours, before I had to hop back in an Uber and head to the airport.

Slept some on the plane. As much as I could.

Got into Dallas. Met up with my friend Rachael and walked around. More of a recent friend so it was the first time we've met in person. It was nice getting to hang out, it was a shame that she wasn't able to make the show! We saw the giant eyeball in downtown Dallas, the farmer's market and this place called Thanks-giving Chapel.   www.dallasadex.org/lost-and-found-contemplating-thanks-giving-square/

That place is really special.  Afterward we were going to go somewhere else, but cut through a hotel and ended up in the lobby sitting and talking for a couple hours until our friends Shelley and Eileen showed to take me to the concert.

We drove down to Waco.  The show was great but I was EXHAUSTED!  My seats were great, but my friends were on the floor of the stadium.  At one point toward the end I look over and Shelley has joined me... and asks if I'm ready and I'm too tired to know what she's talking about.  She grabs my hand, and positions it so security can't see that I'm not wearing a wrist band, and then moves my hand so it's around her so the second series of security can't notice the lack of a band either!  :D  She's obviously a pro at this.  Note to security - just let her do it! It's for a good cause!  :)

Honestly, that moment of her knowing that I was feeling alone - even in a sea of people - and wanting me to feel included, that meant more than I can possibly express. She's a really good friend (she was the one who gave me the ticket in the first place, and then kept getting more tickets from people and traded up several times!)  Standing much closer to the action definitely improved the show.     crescentvale.com/2025/08/boys-from-oklahoma-concert-turnpike-troubadours-cross-canadian-ragweed-and-more-rock-waco/

The main acts were Cross Canadian Ragweed and Turnpike Troubadours.   Throughout the show there were guest stars who came out. They saved the biggest one for the end - Robert Earl Keen!!  (If you don't know who that is, that will make no difference. If you do though, you KNOW how big of a deal that is for him to just appear out of nowhere unexpectedly!)

Afterward I went back to Dallas in an Uber and tried, unsuccessfully, to sleep in the airport that was already opened and busy by the time I got there! I was pretty much a zombie when I got back to Tampa!  (Slept most of the flight)

All of this happened because I've been saying "Yes"... I may need to set up a "Say Yes" fundraiser though because that's going to get a lot more difficult in the coming, rest of my life.  :D

Seriously though, it was a really good weekend, and I really needed it.

Things are the house are decent. I love being around Cynthia and she seems much happier without having to be "the wife" role on her. It's nice to see her smile again. Not sure how much longer I will be living here (lots of variables at play) but I want to enjoy the time we have together.

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

The Wheel declared that this week was an intersection, two writers pairing up (one prompt each) to interweave their talents to create something bigger than them both!

(Or in one case, one writer pairing up with herself to do the same!)

There are a number of different ways to handle intersections as far as voting goes, and this one that came up was very specific that the vote totals of the partners were going to be added together. The writers with the fewest number of votes will be eliminated, both of them!

So it’s more important than ever to read, comment and vote for your favorites - and spread the word to tell others to do the same!

This is a great chance for people to be exposed to your partner’s work, and the work of all of the fantastic writers we have assembled here!

The poll closes Sunday, August 31st at 8pm ET.

Good luck to everyone!

The surviving contestants are all gathered in the Foyer, waiting for the next poll to go live.

But before they can get to that, there is a matter of outing a KILLER!!

They've been at it for weeks, but this time, this time they will get one of them!!! They know it in their bones. Their numbers are dwindling and the suspect lists are too.  This is the week they are going to accuse the right person and have them immediately outed!!

They have put their heads together, and the collective group has stated that the Killer is none other than flipflop diva!!  An audible gasp escapes someone in the corner.

But no further information is given. Which means it was not correct.

Another gasp is heard, and then a thud.  Then a scream, and more...

I just decided to give you another week on the deadline to give people more time to coordinate and write.  I wasn't planning on it, but a comment about the amount of time came up and which led me to asking the Wheel. therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1195555.html

So - thank the Wheel!

[personal profile] clauderainsrm
Yes.  You read that correctly - there's an S at the end. Because with an intersection each partner gets a different prompt. But again, you can figure that out.

Your prompts for the week are *spins wheel*:

BAT
Oxytocin Loop

The deadline to link your entries back to this thread is Wednesday, August 27th at 7pm ET.   (and remember to send me your accusations on the identity of a Killer!)

We got rid of one of the "No Twist" options last week. So I'm not going to ask the wheel about removing another one.

I'm hoping for something good. Or "good".. or at least interesting!!

Come on Wheel.... show me what you've got!!

First wheel - Twist or No Twist... And the wheel says.... *spins*  TWIST!!!!

So we move to the second wheel...

*spins*

Well, at least YOU will love this one.  Well, some of you.

It's an INTERSECTION!!!

The Wheel was apparently happy with how last week went, and wants to see more of it.

For those of you who haven't been around when there is an Intersection it's pretty straight forward.  You find yourself a partner.  Feel free to use this space to do so.  You can handle that part anyway you like, as well as how you work together.

But you create two related pieces (one each), it's still your independent work after all. But the pieces should somehow relate to each other, How that works for you is of course up to you!  :)

There was a poll with 3 people leaving.  Due to a tie, only 1 person ended up being eliminated and the other 4 were sent to a Sudden Death Write Off.

Which ended with 1 person being eliminated and 2 people in a tie.

So, let's do this in order. First we are saying goodbye to someone who definitely is proving how unpredictable this mini season has been - the only contestant to survive 200 Weeks - [personal profile] roina_arwen

I would say "I hope you will home game" and "hang around and support your favorites", but let's be honest, I can't imagine a world where that would happen.

***
For the other two in the tie, [personal profile] alycewilson  and  tonithegreat you now have the Black Mark on you.  If you are in another tie, for the duration of this competition, you will be eliminated.

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

Another week and another Write Off to determine who will be eliminated!

One person used his bye, which means that he moves on to Week 8. That means of the 4 contestants remaining under consideration, HALF of them will be eliminated.  (The 2 with the fewest votes) So make sure to read, comment and vote for your favorites to advance!

The poll closes Tuesday, September 3rd at 8pm ET.

Good luck to everyone!

Week 8 has started   therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1159092.html

The closer we get to the end, the more it's going to hurt to lose people. But honestly, that's how it is for me every single week of these things. I never want to see people go, but it's the entire point of the exercise.  It's what keeps us moving forward.

***

Speaking of moving forward - let's look back on a couple questions I received today about the voting. It echoes something I thought about a few weeks ago about the votes, so I figured I'd touch on both topics.

(1) This is the one from my own head:  Just to remind people that encouraging your friends and family to show up to support you is fantastic. Not a single problem with it. BUT if you know that your Uncle Joe set up a DW account to vote, LET ME KNOW so when I see that account I will know "Oh, that's Uncle Joe and not flag it as a potential problem" (someone setting up fake accounts) That's something that hasn't been an issue in a very long time - and this mini season has only had a couple "Uncle Joe" accounts and none of them (thus far) has impacted the results. But I haven't said anything in a really long time either and some people weren't here the last time I said it. So just as a reminder of the existing rule- LET ME KNOW.

(2) This is the one I've been asked a couple different times, both today and a few weeks back - Why are votes disappearing? "I had 11 votes a few minutes ago and now I have 10!"   I have not seen anything from DW support about a potential issue with polls. So I did the next step and checked it myself.  I was able to click "Edit your votes" and it listed ALL of the votes that I had cast.  Which answers the number one suspect - "The LJ Glitch", which is something that happened on Livejournal (which, DW code is the same, so that was definitely a potential culprit)  where if you hit 'edit my votes" it took you back to the voting screen but deleted all of your previous votes. You had to remember everyone you had supported the first time and hope you got it right. But in the meantime, those old votes were gone.

So that didn't seem to be an issue.

HOWEVER, there is a button right next to it that says "Clear Vote" (paraphrased, but let's go with that) which deliberately does what that glitch did - takes away all of your votes and gives you a clean slate.  If someone were to accidentally hit that button, that would eliminate 1 vote from everyone they voted for... it would also impact the list of voters (and when they voted) that DW keeps for admins. So if I saw a name originally and then didn't see it again, that would be my best guess.  However, to the best of my knowledge, I don't see that has occurred, at least not in the last couple of weeks. (it is something to watch out for when you vote in the future)
Which leads  me into the more straightforward reasons why your vote might change - someone liked your entry, but your votes are pretty close to someone else's and they liked their entry better. You see that shifting toward the end, I know at least one person who LIKES ties, and some who hate them.  If you and I are about to go into a tie-breaker, I'm probably not going to want to give you my vote any more.  Especially if another person might decide to break the tie by giving you an extra vote... all of a sudden I've just voted myself out of the game!!

(Hint: No one ever wants to vote themselves out of the game)

There's the school of thought that votes early and for everyone they like all at once and doesn't edit a single vote. There are the people who come late and votes for everyone they like all of once and doesn't even have the time to edit their votes even if they want to.. and then there is the majority of people in between those.  Some will only vote for themselves early on - but then add votes as they read other people's entries, one or two at a time. And yeah, there will be a time when someone has put a "I usually like their work" vote and then decides that this week didn't quite live up to it.  (Note: I haven't had that conversation with a voter THIS week, or even this mini season. But I have had it before, where they just couldn't vote for that person that week and it was weird  but they wanted to make sure it was OK to edit their vote.)

My answer to them - and anyone else - is YES. You can edit your vote, for any reason you want to edit your vote.  This is a function of a poll, it's not locked down to a "final answer"... regardless of where it is located, most polls have an edit function where your responses can evolve right up until they close. DW is no different.

It can be confusing, and more than a little emotional at times to think you have more votes and then suddenly you have less. It can be easy to take it personally. The *most* personal thing about it though, is the scenario of where they want to support keeping someone else.  And even that isn't about you, it's about that other writer. (easier said than internally processed. I definitely understand that!! But I wanted to put it out there.)

***
There's my soapbox and/or answers for the weekend. Any more questions?

***
Oh, my hanging out with a former coworker....yeah, it was weird. Not him. He was fine. ME. I was being weird about it. It really did feel like he was friends with my abusive ex. I want to hang out more, but probably not anytime in the near future. I need more space to continue to grow and process.  (I'm sure it's nothing that getting my unemployment check wouldn't heal... IF that ever happens!)

A couple RL updates - Thursday night I'll be spending time with a former co-worker for the first time since I was fired.  He still works there. Will it be awkward? Maybe. I'll let you know.  It's not like he worked in the same department, but we used to be in the same area (my former team was moved back to the old building.... apparently when they said they "needed them near the CFO", they meant they needed ME there. :D  I wish they had made that decision before they added an hour to my commute everyday... but I'm happy for the old team. Well, those who live closer to that building at least. It's not as nice, but it's far less underfoot with drama-filled as the corporate office.)

Anyway, I'll be hanging out with the former co-worker - quite possibly playing some skee-ball. There's a nearby West African restaurant, so I'm considering doing that too. Who knows though!

What has YOUR experience been with socializing with someone you worked with - at a place where things ended "in a not-ideal fashion"?

***

Present job drama. Not really 'drama" as much as it is - "that was unexpected"
We had our first Support Services meeting today. Which was nice. Big group all together, played some games, they gave out some recognition awards, one of those "team bonding" experiences. Very welcoming. Nice change of pace.  However - this is the "weird" part (for me at least), they started the meeting with a video... the message popped up "Please Stand for the National Anthem: and then they started playing Lady Gaga signing at the Super Bowl.

Everyone in the room stood and faced the screen and/or the flag near the screen.  I've never had a job that involved standing for the National Anthem before... have you?

Not sure if this is the "our Big boss" thing (ex-military), if this is a DeSantis thing? If it's government work thing in general? Anyone ever encounter this in the wild before?

The poll is happening right now   therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1158072.html

and as I've been saying for awhile, I hope that everyone gets out and reads, comments and votes for their favorites.

But there was a comment the other day that dovetailed into a question that's been on my mind. So I'll address both at once.

Someone brought up a writing contest that they participate in, and linked to it.  I probably wouldn't have thought too much of it other than (after checking it out) noticing how long they had been around and that it was definitely something completely different to what we do here. But because I've been going back into the archives that struck me because I used to have a rule about posting links, specifically to stop that kind of thing. Why? Because, as I said, you don't go into a Wendy's and hand out coupons to McDonald's. These days I wouldn't be in either of those places, but you get the gist.

I was also very much aware of other groups I'd been in where people decided to form their own offshoots and used the founder's work gathering the people and fostering a community as their private recruiting pool. Having seen it destroy other communities, I tried to keep an eye on that sort of thing... and sure enough, it did happen a few times in Idol history where people tried just that, to varying degrees of success.

So those two principles were why the rule was in place, but over the years we kind of got lax about it, I think especially when people were talking about places where people could get paid for their work or further workshop... but again only in places where Idol wasn't being used as a funnel.

I'm not sure what we'd have to funnel these days anyway.  :)  But hopefully you get what I'm meandering on about.  This particular link very much fit the exception, so like I said, it was fine. No harm. No foul. Just using it as a mental jumping off point to where my brain went NEXT...

The "read, comment and vote" has a follow up to it. TELL OTHER people. Some mention it on Facebook or tell their personal friends - and word of mouth has always been very kind.

But that (above) thought process got me thinking do people go into OTHER writing spaces and promote Idol the same way they mention those places here?  If not, why not?

There's not a lot holding long form social media together these days. It needs all the promotion it can get. If you're counting on someone else to do it for you, that probably isn't going to happen.

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

We are losing 2 contestants before we get to the actual poll. [personal profile] hafnia knew she would not be able to make the deadline this week due to illness, and decided to drop. [personal profile] strryeyedgrrl missed the deadline and is out of byes, and has been eliminated.

Two major competitors are gone and we haven’t even had the poll yet! That means all of you are one step closer to the finish line.

Or, to be more accurate - you are one more step closer to the Top 20, when Byes expire. Which is where we should be next week, given that we will be losing the 3 contestants with the fewest votes this week!

Once we hit the Top 20, the number of eliminations will drop again, but the stakes are higher so the numbers should be too!

Now is the time to stop hiding away from society and start spreading the word about what we have going on here! Read, comment and vote for your favorites! Then let the world know that they should do the same!!!

The poll closes Friday August 30th at 8pm ET.

Good luck to everyone!

My lawyers have advised me to NOT imply that Idol has been endorsed by Taylor Swift. So I will not. Not that anyone thought she had, but maybe in the back of your mind you were wondering "Did Taylor Swift endorse this mini season of LJ Idol"? And the answer to that is, I can not speak to that at this time.

***

In reading through previous Green Rooms it's interesting to see what a community hub we were in terms of topics that came up. It wasn't always just about the nature of writing, but news in general. I think a big part of the shift wasn't just the change in how social media is used/misused and how tense a lot of these conversations became but that there was a shift in who came into these spaces to talk. There simply wasn't as much of an interest in in-depth conversations anymore (not that they ever got TOO deep anyway. I always try to keep it lighthearted. There are never too many conversations about why René Descartes should have an Acme anvil dropped on his head. But maybe there *should* be....  ;)

Every season, be it a full season, mini, exhibit, special event, etc has it's own vibe. It should be it's own thing that develops over the course of the time we have together. Having so many back to back though I think created a singular style. Not that it's always a bad thing. But it's definitely a "thing"...   much like the shifts in what people want out of Idol. (from the "we're just here to have some fun to those using it to further their writing career/gain skills and everything in between. I know of a couple who started out in the first camp who *have* ended up using it professionally! Which is great.

I think the fact that at my old jobs, I was always able to get online and post/engage whereas with this one I can't do that. (they actually monitor) is also a factor. I'm hoping that people are too busy talking to each other to care about whatever I'm saying...

The deadline is on Monday. So make sure you are working on your entries sometime between now and then. (preferably not Monday with a half hour to go. :D You know if I'm talking about you... yes, you do.  ;)  )

How has your weekend been going so far?

***

I was in the breakroom at lunch on Friday when I see my boss come in looking for me.  She let me know that I had dropped my badge, and it had been placed on my chair.  She just didn't want me to leave the building without realizing that the badge had fallen out of the holder and not be able to get back in.  I had been warned that this wasn't uncommon for the "side badge holders" and you just needed to keep an eye on it. And I had been... apparently right up until I didn't.

I thought that was really nice of her, went back to my desk after lunch and grabbed my badge. Then we found one of the top loading pouches, which are more secure and now I have a better way of displaying my badge.

None of this is very interesting. But the punchline is that later I found out that the person who found my badge *wasn't* my boss. It was HERS.  The guy who initially didn't want to hire me.  :O  (He's fine with me now... or at least he was until I became the clueless guy who goes around dropping his access badge. I haven't ran into him since then, apparently he was cool about it. But now I have that in my head!  :D

(Like I said though, apparently this is something that happens with those types of badge holders. No idea why they still issue them instead of the better ones. Unless it's all an elaborate hazing ritual.  :D)

Posting this from my phone. So someone please post the relevant links below.  :)

New prompt has been posted.  Anyone have immediate ideas? Anyone struggling?  Anyone planning on staying in their house until they come up with an idea?

The results from last week were posted as well as a sacrifice to avoid a mass write off  One interesting fact about drippedonpaper’s sacrifice that wasn’t mentioned last night - she’s getting close to 100 Weeks

At a time when a few others have been celebrated for their accomplishment, she opted to step aside for others   There’s not an award for that, but deserves to be recognized

The bus is almost to the giraffe enclosure so I’m going to hit “post” on this. Happy Friday Eve.

it's time for another cool word as a prompt.  :)

One that you basement dwellers might be familiar with.  (I'm only assuming you dwell in a basement. It's not like a have a camera in there.)

But if I did, it would be clear why this is the prompt for the week:

Another week has passed and a poll has closed.

The two entries with the fewest amount of votes received a strike for their creator. This week there was a three-way tie, which means there is one extra.

*glances at spreadsheet* Unfortunately, two of those people were on their final chance, and now have their third strike (and have been eliminated)

Which means it's goodbye to our friends

I hope that we will continue to see you around, and that you Home Game!

The third goes to [personal profile] adoptedwriter , who now has her first strike. The good news there is that because of the format we will get to enjoy more of her work in the weeks to come!
