A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

Last January, we launched an experiment - a mini season that focused around the idea of people not being immediately eliminated but instead had 3 strikes.

Two members of the final 3 actually got here without a single strike against them. One rode out that final strike for a long time. Both of those are huge accomplishments.

It was less than a month later that my work life went into pure chaos. If I had known it was coming, I would have never started this. But I’m glad that I did.

At the end of this month, my team will be back to being fully staffed since July of 2021! I’m really excited. Hopefully that will mean life will get better.

Their final work showcases why they are here, the finale. 3 distinct writers telling their stories.

It’s up to YOU, the voters, to decide who is going to ultimately become the winner.

Read. Comment. Vote for your favorite.

The poll closes Sunday, December 11th at 9pm ET.

Good luck to everyone!

 The final prompt.

There's really only way to end 3 Strikes...so here it is:

"You're Out"

The deadline to link your final entry is Thursday December 8th at 7pm ET.

Have fun!

Wow.

Let me look at that again.

Wow.

196 people came out to vote this week.

I saw some *old* friends in those numbers. It's always nice to know that people are paying attention even when they aren't active in the community.

Every time people say that LJ is dead, look at what can happen if you just push a little to get them to come out! :)

This was a back and forth struggle between two Titans of LJ Idol that had me on the edge of my seat the entire time!

In the end though, by a narrow margin - our second place finisher was the always fantastic [livejournal.com profile] gratefuladdict, who has managed to do this "going to the finals" thing two times. Which is, by the way, the first time that's been done!

Our winner is the first male to ever take home the crown on his own - the one, the only [livejournal.com profile] prog_schlock!!!

You did [livejournal.com profile] kittymichaels proud. He would have been really happy to see this. (Well, he would have won. But maybe he would have made you think you had something to do with it)

Congratulations to both of you!

Congratulations as well to everyone who came out for this mini season and left it all on the field. Thank you for your continued love and support!

Dreslinski out.

It's our last day together.

LJ Idol: Friends and Rivals is coming to a close, with the poll ending tonight: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/941351.html so make sure to get your votes in to choose your next LJ Idol!

***

Usually, at the end of a season I pass the hat. But (1) I did that a few weeks ago and (2) I'm going to share this link instead:

http://www.oneorlando.org/

"The purpose of the Fund is to provide a way to help respond to the needs of our community, now and in the time to come, after the effects of the Pulse tragedy."

***

Throughout the mini-season, and well, over the past few years - there has been a lot of talk about the differences between "Old Idol" and "New Idol", which is really just a new version of the "fiction" vs "non-fiction" debate. :)

On the way into work this morning, as I was drifting in and out of sleep, I was thinking about what I wanted to say in the last Green Room of the mini-season. I was thinking about conversations I had when non-fiction was the "norm". That by talking about it in a piece that was being voted on, that people were "exploiting" their own sexual abuse. That people were lying about being blind/deaf/etc or having multiple personalities.

That people were lying about their past - who they were, what they had done.

There was a lot of that talk behind the scenes.

A contestant was writing first person accounts of her life as a dragon. For some reason no one minded that. :)

Which was the example I always used - that if you tell me "I'm a dragon" I will say "OK, you're a dragon". Because what is it costing me to believe that? Absolutely nothing.

What reminded me of this has been all the talk about gender lately. Some of it in regard to Orlando (well that's been "sexual identity" which is different. But let's just lump it all into one thing while acknowledging that it's completely not the same thing), some from "Great Restroom Debate". Some just from reading what people are talking about, that intersected with the two.

I don't claim to be any sort of expert on how people identify. Far from it. I know some things, other things I've had looked up - and still more I don't even have a very good understanding of once I have - and of course there are constantly new variations and names for things popping up that leave me just shaking my cane and yelling at people to just stay off my lawn.

Here's the thing though - I don't *have* to understand the minutia to still get the overview of "let people live their lives". As long as no one else is being harmed and everyone involved knows what is happening and are consenting - how is anything going on with your life impacting mine?

So tell me your pronouns and I'll use them. Tell me who you love and I'll try to remember their names. (Note: I may fail in both of these, but that's just because I deal with a lot of people. But remind me and eventually I'll get it)

I'll get things wrong. Hell, I've probably gotten most of this post wrong and said something horrible! Go ahead and tell me (I prefer politely, because who wants to be yelled at? :D) and I'll make a mental note to not get it wrong next time.

Some might interpret this as "Gary cares about us", but really it's because you all look alike to me and really the only *true* label on you is "dirty hippie foreigner". Which makes you all equal when it comes to Idol. Everyone deserves the same amount of kickings, and you know you are going to get them!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The poll closes tomorrow! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/941351.html

Other than that - give me some good news!

There's a ton of stuff I could be talking about right now, but none of it is good.

So let's hear some!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The final poll is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/941351.html and the question has been once again asked if there is a tie, will there be 2 winners?

No. There will be a tie-breaker.

Season 2 of LJ Idol's final actually went into a "tie-breaker of a tie-breaker"! (and was eventually decided by *1 vote*)

It might make for better drama *not* to tell you that. But I have already said it in a comment, so it's "out there" already, just everyone might not have seen it. :)

***

The more I see on social media about the Orlando shootings, the more I dislike people. Not a single person has shifted a single inch - in any direction - from where they were before this. If anything, they've just gotten deeper into their trenches for the moment - and the only thing they seem to see is what they were already looking at. :O

But then again, I'm also in my own "I don't like people" trench. But that's mostly just because of you guys! ;)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

Paul Westerberg once issued the following challenge: “Look me in the eye and then tell, that I’m satisfied.”

If you were to look me in the eye right now and ask me about this final two - you would be able to tell the answer immediately - and not in the way Westerberg would reveal.

Friends and Rivals is coming to an end - with two more contestants, two friends and (in the competition) rivals for the title LJ Idol!

Place your bets - and tell a friend! (or three)

The poll closes Thursday, June 16th at 9pm EDT!

Good luck to you both!

It's the final week of Friends and Rivals, and the deadline for the final entries http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/940205.html. Considering the sheer strength of the Final 2, I should be celebrating. Instead, I'm having trouble sleeping.

The attack at the Pulse was very much on my mind - especially the detail of all the phones ringing with people trying to contact their loved ones. Phones ringing to calls that would never be picked up.

I don't really comment much about how I feel about social or political issues. Because honestly - the spotlight isn't on me. It's on you. I want to set the stage so you can be free to talk about them. (and who wants to hear from another cis-gender old white guy anyway? :p)

Being in Orlando that night though - just a few minutes away... had we stayed to get something to eat (like I wanted to do), we would have probably still been in the area when the shooting occurred.

I wasn't at the Pulse, to the best of my knowledge none of my friends were there that night (although some of them definitely go there). I wasn't close enough that I was in any real danger (unless he had decided to come to the club I was at , a few blocks away and a few hours earlier. But "we" weren't his target - unless he decided he also hated Gogol Bordello)

It's still profoundly disturbing though. If something like this *doesn't* rattle something inside of you, you may want to check the gears of your robot heart, because something might need oil.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I'm going old school and writing this from the computer at the library!

I remember when I had to walk down the street at a certain time to make sure that Green Rooms went up, or had to rush to secure the lunch room computer at work in order to close a poll! It was scary and exciting! Was this going to the time things just crashed and burned???

We just happen to be at the library today though, and I realized I might not get the chance to post tonight because I am going to the Gogol Bordello/Frank Turner show!

So, during this time while I am at the library - what books should I be checking out?

Anything you would recommend?

Once the new entries are posted, I'll be reading them. But in the meantime - what's good out there?

It's the last week of Friends and Rivals.

For 25 weeks, we have had multiple topic choices, picked from suggestions by the contestants.

There are so many ways this finale could have played out, but in this case, it's going to be the standard for a mini-season:

Open Topic

*You* are going to decide what you want to write.

The deadline to link your entry back to this thread is Monday, June 13th at 8pm EDT

Have fun!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I couldn't have planned this if I tried. I certainly didn't have it as "this is going to happen" on my radar when I started the season.

I called it "Friends and Rivals" and we end up with people who are *actually* friends, who are "rivals" in terms of now competing head to head for the title.

One of them started on a team of "Friends". The other started as a "Rival".

One came back into the game via Second Chance and the other started a second life on LJ under a new identity!

One has never been a finalist before - and the other took second place in Season 9. (our most recent season)!

One actually was one of the people who came up with the idea for this mini season! The other... did not. ;)

One man. One woman.

Both are Well known for being really good at fiction AND non-fiction. (and pretty much anything else they decide to tackle)

There is a ton of LJ history between these two and I am a huge fan of both of them. Not only as writers, but as human beings.

Congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] gratefuladdict and [livejournal.com profile] prog_schlock for making it to the finals!

Your final topic is up at: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/940205.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Holy grap!

Week after week I say "that was a wild poll" and it seems like the voters take that as a dare to top it the following time!

I think that says a great deal about the quality of the work that people seem so divided as to what they enjoy the most.

Unfortunately, it's the nature of the beast that we have to say goodbye to some people. Given that we will also be welcoming others into the fold, as Last Chance Idol folds up, I figure that we should save that good news for the end, for finish on a high note.

All of the people leaving us have been a huge part of this season and will very much be missed. I really hope though that we will continue to see them around for the Home Game, and to just hang out in the Green Rooms, cheering on their favorites!

Those leaving from the Redemption Tribe are: [livejournal.com profile] copyright1983 (who sacrificed) and *BY ONE VOTE* [livejournal.com profile] dmousey (look for that name later, since she was also part of LCI)

From the main tribe, we are losing [livejournal.com profile] favoritebean [livejournal.com profile] labelleizzy and [livejournal.com profile] uncawes. Again, we are talking a 1 vote difference for 1 of those positions and only 3 for the others.

We are also saying goodbye to some people over at Last Chance Idol. I had forgotten that I had been nice, and so that I thought I would be giving a bit of a different announcement here. But once I checked, I realized that I had been generous and only eliminated 2.

Ah, but what a pair they are! Seriously, it would have been nice to see them progress. Unfortunately, eliminating people is what we do to get to the finale.

We are losing [livejournal.com profile] aimercat and [livejournal.com profile] i_love_freddie.

Thank you to all of you for coming out this season. I hope that we will continue to see you around!

***

Now for the flip side of that Last Chance Idol poll - the good news. I was nice and allowed 3 of the 5 to move up. So, joining the main competition as of this week are: [livejournal.com profile] dmousey (I told you her name was coming up again -she breaks even), [livejournal.com profile] emo_snal and [livejournal.com profile] swirlsofblue

Congratulations, and welcome back to the fray!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I had a bunch of things that I wanted to talk about today - and then I saw the polls.

Suddenly, that's the only important thing on my mind. ;)

Have you looked at them? Because if you have: we've got a barn burner!!!

I know: "I don't look at the polls Gary"/"Stop trying to make me look at the polls Gary"/"I'm not a slave to the F5... I'm not, I'm refuse to be... I can't... OMG..."

I literally have no idea who is going to get out of this week alive, in any of the polls. (I have some suspicions based on current momentum, but no one is really "outside the zone" of a possibility at this point). Granted, the vast majority of votes tend to happen on the final day of voting anyway.

So right here - right now, I'm given you a platform to state the case *for someone else*.

What have you read that, if they don't make it through this week, you will start overturning cars and setting your neighborhood on fire?

The main poll is right here: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/799452.html
Last Chance is here: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/798994.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I keep forgetting to mention this, but this week is "Asexual Awareness Week". So - go hug an asexual. Just track them down, stop them on the street in front of wherever it is that they are going, and give them a hug and say "I am aware of you and your struggles".

Note: This may not be a "good idea" and may get you "arrested". But it would be funny, for me. Which is why you do all the things you do.

***

Speaking of "the things you do", a couple people pointed out yesterday that we started in March. Which means that it's time for something that most veterans have seen, but perhaps have never processed - and that newbies need to know about.

I warned you ahead of time that 6 months is a point where things tend to get crazy. People break down under the stress and there are drops/freak outs.

Knowing about it ahead of time seemed to keep it relatively contained. (for the most part)

So you should know that the next time that tends to be happen is at 8 months.

I said at the beginning (of all things) that this is a marathon, not a sprint.

The people that are still standing are the ones who have been able to embrace that idea. Heck, there were some that have fallen over the previous months who embraced it, but real life ended up getting them anyway! So it's not a life-proof philosophy. But it helps!

So just go into the next month of Idol knowing that you probably won't survive it. Write and submit your entries as early as you can - so that you don't get caught with a last minute real life situation that stops you from you doing it. Mostly though, have fun writing.

I won't say "that's what it is about", because "what is about" is keeping *me* entertained. But if you want to pretend it's about you writing, go right ahead!

***
Speaking of the writing - we have a couple polls going on right now. Last Chance is determining who will, and will not, move forward: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/798994.html and the main competition itself: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/799452.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

They say “It comes in threes” and apparently “they” are right.

We lost 3 writers in Last Chance Idol before the poll officially opened http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/798994.html and we are losing 3 more from the main competition due to missing the deadline.

26 weeks into this process can be grueling and take out even the most dedicated writers. All it takes is one bad week, one misstep, and you can be falling off the edge of that cliff.

Which is what has happened to our friends [livejournal.com profile] agirlnamedluna, [livejournal.com profile] barrelofrain and [livejournal.com profile] waltzmatildah

They will most definitely be missed, although I hope we will continue to see them “playing the Home Game” and cheering on their favorites as this season kicks into it’s next phase.

The main competition is divided between two polls: The Redemption Tribe and the main tribe. The Redemption is made up of those who were nearly eliminated, but ended up in the tie. They were “saved” by circumstance have been given an extra spotlight to give them a better chance to “redeem” themselves when they return to the thick of things. Of course, given their smaller numbers, they are also in a greater danger of being eliminated! Nothing is without a price.

The main tribe is the rest of the competition.

We will be losing the 2 contestants with the lowest vote totals from Redemption and the 3 lowest from the main competition.

So it should be interesting!

The poll closes Thursday, Oct 30th at 10pm EDT - make sure to get out there ASAP to read, comment and vote for your favorites!

Good luck to everyone!

I posted this in today's Green Room, but just in case people missed it:

m going to channel this season's Jeff Probst who has been doing something interesting.

He's been negotiating. Or at least hearing people out in negotiations.

So I'll tell you what - gift byes are gone. BUT I'm going to allow them to come back - because someone specifically asked - under these conditions: Two for One.

Two byes from someone else (or 1 from 2 people, which is more likely) will equal one gift bye that can be given to someone in need. This offer is on the table from now until the Top 50.

It puts two other contestants on the line. But it's their choice to do it. Which introduces a new wrinkle into things... if people *really* want to see someone continue, enough to put themselves on the hot seat... well, we will see what happens.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
"Hey Gary, when is the deadline for the main competition *and* Last Chance Idol?"

That's tonight at 8pm EDT!

http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/797204.html and http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/797508.html

So if you haven't gotten yours in yet, get to it!

On the other hand, if you have, are are just sitting around waiting for something to happen... we haven't done this in a little bit (I honestly can't recall if we did it this season. Maybe really early on...)

Let's make today an AMA (Ask Me Anything).

There are things that I *can't* tell you, for the purposes of the game, but if I can answer, I will! :)

So, what do you want to know?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
What is your favorite book-turned-movie/movie-turned-book? (TV shows count)

Do you find it better when they follow the original note-for-note or go off in their own directions and interpretations? (That's more for TV shows, since they have more time and space to accomplish that)

What have been some of your *least* favorite adaptations and why do you think they failed?

One thing that *won't* fail is that the topic for the main competition is here: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/797204.html
and Last Chance Idol has their topic over here: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/797508.html

So make sure to get your entries in by tomorrow!

Now excuse me for a few minutes - I have a red-handled machete and some promises to keep.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I thought this was interesting: http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2014/10/21/357629765/when-women-stopped-coding

***

Also of interest (to me) - and not at all related in any way whatsoever to the idea of a lessening of women in the field of computing over the years - Nope, none at all, was the number of people (both male and female) who replied to Felicia Day's statement about being "doxxed" (just found out what that is!) after posting some thoughts on Game Gate, by telling her how she is their celebrity crush and/or how pretty they think she is.

She works in television. I'm *pretty sure* that at some point there was another human being who thought she was pretty. ;)

I somehow doubt she is going to be reading and go "OMG, I am so flattered that someone thinks that I'm hot when I'm dealing with people putting my personal information out onto the internet. I want to go have massive amounts of sex with them right now!"

I could be wrong though. Based on the sheer number of people who are doing it, maybe it *has* worked before! ;)

***

Something that *always* works is eliminations. They are painful, but they work to move the competition further into the heart of darkness.

We had one such elimination tonight: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/797157.html
There was also a new topic for the main competition: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/797204.html as well as one for Last Chance Idol:http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/797508.html and a Work Room (for both) http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/797925.html
