We are in that weird "between the top 10 and 20" spot in the mini season where things seem to stretch out forever and there are still various scenarios on how things could play out.  Given how unpredictable things have been, in the game and in life, there is no telling what the result is going to be.  I can look at say I have a good idea... but then next week could prove me completely wrong!

Like this week, if you told me that two favorites would be leaving I'd nod and say "Well, yeah... of course..."

If you had told me that one of them was going to sacrifice IN HER ENTRY I would have been shocked... or that the other would send me a message letting me know that regardless of the result of the poll, that her plan was to also sacrifice - to save spots for other people to move one step ahead.... yeah, I think I would have said you were joking.

But that's what happened.

This week we lose two amazing writers and top-notch human beings... and serious contenders to have taken the crown in any season they participate in. Which means the possible outcomes have opened up a little bit in an unexpected way. Or maybe narrowed to certain outcomes.  (depending on how cynical I'm feeling at the moment.  :D)

Seriously though, these two are going to be missed and considering how tight their Survivor "alliance" was, it certainly isn't a surprise that once again they are making the same moves!!

Goodbye to the great [personal profile] bleodswean  and [personal profile] murielle plan on kicking it for it's transgressions!!  Thank you so much for fighting through it though and being able to stay involved as long as you did! I hope that you are able to home game, or at very least will stick around to cheer on your favorites!

Yes, it really has been that long since I've posted an actual Green Room.

How have you been?

I've been OK. Still kind of shell-shocked and in a "blah"... but I do have FEST (the 3 day punk show/with a pre-show we're going to this year) coming up this week so I'm hoping that is enough to break me out of it.

Maybe eliminating some damn hippies will help too. We've got that coming up TONIGHT  therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1169596.html

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

It was going to be one thing, but ended up being another. That’s how life works sometimes.

In this case, when I posted that I wouldn’t be home to post the poll last night it was because my Mom needed help. The roof turbine had come off her house, and was damaged during Milton and she was afraid the next time it stormed that it was an open path for the rain to get into her attic. So she needed it to be put back up.

I had no idea how I was going to do it, but I agreed to come over and get on the roof. If you know me, you know what a horrible idea that was! I should never be on a roof, ever. That’s an invite for a trip to the hospital. But that’s not what happened… what happened was that I called an old friend of mine who *does* have experience in such things, and asked him for some tips on what I might need to do… and he volunteered to go over and do it after work instead! (they live in the same city, unlike me who would have had to get over and back on the bus)

He ended up doing it fairly easily. Note: they didn’t have the tools he needed, so he brought them himself. Which means I wouldn’t have had the tools that were needed either! So I’m really glad I made that call.

So I had already postponed the poll and was planning on going home instead. Which is when I got the text message from Celena (my step daughter for those playing the Home Game of my life) saying that her Dad had to work and couldn’t go to the hockey game. So he gave her his tickets, and she wanted to know if I wanted to go with her. The answer to “Do I want to spend time with Celena” is ALWAYS yes, regardless of what it is. So since I was unexpectedly free for the evening, that’s what I said!! (Honestly, I probably would have been tempted to postpone the poll for that on its own. :D)

It was a great game and a win for everyone involved. But especially me. Oh, and the Lightning as well. But mostly me.

So I set out to do one thing, and ended up doing something very different.

Which is, I’m sure, what happened when the contestants wrote their entries this week. Hey, look! A transition!! See how subtle it is!!!

They were headed in one direction and the work grabbed them and they ended up somewhere new and unexpected… and once again it worked out for everyone. But mostly me. And you, the people who are lucky enough to read their work!!

So click the links. Read the work. Comment on it. Then come back and vote for your favorites!! Just as important though - spread the word! We only have 14 contestants left right now, and by the time we close, we will have 12. Things are getting tighter and tighter, and if you want to see your favorites advance, your word of mouth is the only way that is going to happen.

Like I said, we are losing 2 contestants again this week. The poll closes Tuesday, October 22nd at 8pm ET. Good luck to everyone!

I owe you an update, and a Green Room. So let's combine them. :)

Business first - there were eliminations: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1168566.html  and a new prompt https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1168718.html

There are now 14 contestants left standing, within arm's reach of the Top 10.  So start looking around the room because 4 of you aren't going to fall short of that goal! So you had better be knocking our socks off every week!!! Not sure what no longer having socks has to do with you surviving longer. But apparently it must be related.

Nor am I sure where these socks end up going.  When you knock them off do they just fly randomly through the air? Are they just knocked to the side? What if you are wearing shoes? If someone is barefoot is it because someone has already knocked their socks off???

***

Anyway - Milton update. I'm sure everyone has seen the news of the hurricane's devastation throughout Florida.

It ended up making landfall south of us, which put us on the northern eye wall. Normally that's a good place to be, but of course Milton had to be different and that was where the worst winds were.

We lost power for 3 days but the only damage to our property was the fence was destroyed. (The neighbor managed to prop it up so his dog could still go in his backyard,. But the first time they dog jumps on the fence or a strong wind and it's coming down again...) We found our mailbox in another neighbor's yard... only located one screw. So those are two things that need to be replaced.

The large trees in the front and the back of the house got a severe trimming of branches, including several that were lodged near the boarded windows. If we hadn't put the plywood up, we would have had house guests.

Our street had some flooding, on the other side... including coming into some of their homes. Fortunately, for us, our side of the street is on a tiny incline. But enough to keep us dry. (for now it's not going to be too much longer before we will be in the flood zone as well)

There are more houses on our block with a tree on them (or a shed or fence) than there are not.  One of our neighbors actually has a tree poking into her house.

Everyone currently has power - except the guy down at the end of the street, the original owner opted to be on a well system instead of the city water and he is on a different grid. So no power and no water for him.  (He's been filling 5 gallon jugs from our outside spigot)

Neighbors came together to help with clean up and there are work crews from all over the country who have shown help to assist with the recovery (the crew who came by to pick up the debris on Sunday was from New Orleans) .

It could have been much, MUCH worse. But I won't lie, there were definitely moments when it was absolutely terrifying.

We made it through though and are trying to get back to normal. And of course my job is a central part of the region's recovery. So at least I'm *involved* on some level. The federal and state government are finally working together - which they weren't after Helene (our Governor wouldn't speak to Biden) So that's a plus! It's nice when public servants actually do their jobs.  :)

This wasn't the original prompt for this week. It wasn't even on this mini season's list. But it was on my "ideas" list - which is good enough.

I'm picking it for the obvious reason. But you can do with it whatever you need to do with it.  :)

The prompt for this week is

From the Wreckage

I saw the comments in the thread about how small the group is getting. It's definitely true.

I can confirm that, yes, your memories are correct. There were quite a few full seasons with more than 200 people and a few that topped 300. That was the direction Idol was going before Livejournal started imploding and we rode that all the way down to the bottom of the hill.

The only times we've been under 100 have been pre-Season 4 and for the mini seasons (and even some of those have been over)

So yes, looking at the numbering of people left in this mini season and weighing how this will go down with the 3 strikes twist in play is definitely enough to make anyone stop for a moment and realize how this really IS a small group, and just how real it could be for any one of you to make it to the end.

With that said, this is a results post, so I need to post those.
The two writers who are adding a strike are
erulissedances and unfortunately someone for whom this is the final strike - hangedkay, who has been eliminated.
It's not a surprise, and I hope you are recovering from COVID - and that we will soon be enjoying more of your work.

What WAS a surprise was how close this week ended up being. It came down to 1 vote that had the potential to take out a lot more writers this week.  Which is a reminder that it could happen at any point....
clauderainsrm: (Default)
[personal profile] clauderainsrm
A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

Everywhere around the world, they coming to read the entries on the prompt “America”...

It doesn’t have the same impact as the Neil Diamond version, but it does get to the point. That was the prompt and you delivered! Not that I’m surprised, because there’s always some really great work here, week after week. But it’s still always nice to see.

Hopefully the rest of the line comes true as well - that people will be coming to read it! Make sure to let them know it’s there - and all of your other favorites as well, so that they can find their new favorites as well!

The two with the fewest votes will be receiving a strike. That list of writers who do not have a single one is growing shorter every week.

So make sure to read, comment and vote to keep your favorites in the hunt!

The poll closes Thursday, July 14th at 8pm ET.

Good luck to everyone!

Just a reminder that the deadline to this week's prompt is tonight https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1121351.html

I know it's easier when you get constant reminders about the deadline in regular Green Rooms. I wish I was in a place where I could do that. On hte other hand, it's also good to keep these things on your internal radar. I'm not looking over your shoulder with writing outside of Idol either, reminding you to do it.  But maybe I can be that voice in your head now and then to remind you to sit down and write.

***
I didn't work much yesterday, which was a change. On the other hand, I did spend the day at the Celebration of Life for my old boss. It was nice seeing some faces I hadn'r seen in years. Of the people still working for the new company who knew her, only two of us showed up.

Her daughter was barely able to read the prepared statement she had written out... and couldn't even get to the podium, she read it from her chair as she was breaking down. I can't imagine what she must be going through at the moment, and how complex the emptions. It's bad enough to lose a parent... losing both of them? When your father killed your mother??? That's going to mess her up for life.

***
Cynthia wasn't feeling well last weekend and took a COVID test, it came back negative. It got worse - she took another one and it came back positive. Fortunately she's fullly vaccinated - I can't imagine how much worse it would be if she wasn't... she's been out for the count this entire week. Her sense of smell and most of her taste has been gone for a couple days. I've been living in the guest room (which is where my office area is.) and we both mask up when I have to pass through common areas when she's around... it's been tough.

Our company policy is that if *I* tested positive, I could keep working from home for 5 days. Otherwise I have to come in.... and I haven't tested positive and I have absolutely no symptoms. So I've gone in... and of course get further and further behind on work. Which is what I told them was going to happen.

***
I have been watching some TV though - so that's been a nice treat. I caught up on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and just started The Bear. Both are excellent.

What have YOU been up to? Watching anything good? Reading anything good? DOING anything good?

I keep a list of potential topics/prompts. When something comes to mind, I write it down in one or two files. (one on my system and the other in my phone, it all depends on where I'm at when it hits me)

Before a season/mini season/special event starts, I'll go over those potential prompts and decide which ones I'm going to use. In the old days, I would actually map out "this is Week 5... Week 22..." etc. Which did lead to some unfortune concoindences where something that hit one way 6 months before, hit a different way when it was scheduled to be unleashed on the unsuspecting writers.

As the years have progressed, I've given myself some wiggle room and made it more "this is around where I want this" but have allowed myself the freedom of bringing in something that felt better at the moment or bumping something that felt like it wasn't the right time for it.

I bring this up because there are some prompts on my list that keep getting bumped season after season. Because it's never the right time.

This mini season I pulled one of the oldest prompts I have left and put it on the schedule for this week... I first put it on the list in 2014. I know it's going to hit a bit differently now than it did then... but it's still very appropriate for the week, and for the international group of writers that are assembled here.

What is it?

America

Good evening.

The head-to-head battle to the literary death matches have taken place and the smoke has cleared. All that remains is naming who is joining the Jury, and who is going forth to take a shot at winning the crown.

Regardless of the outcome, we knew we would be losing some talented people. So it's not much of a surprise that seeing the names here is going to sting. But that's where we are, and where we will be for the rest of this mini season as it plays out. Every week is going to take us one step closer to the end, and one heartbreak after another.

From the main competition - leaving us is

[personal profile] codenamewanderlust

and from the Second Chance, it is

[personal profile] blue_velvet

Thank you so much to both of you for coming out this mini season. I've really been enjoying your writing, and I know a lot of others feel the same way. You certainly gave them a difficult choice.

***

This means that [personal profile] babydramatic_1950  is claiming the final spot and joining the main competition.  Congratulations!

Plans don't tend to change that often when it comes to Idol, which is why I like to be upfront and tell you when it does, and why.

I had planned on announcing the new topic last night. But as I was about to do so, I had a change of heart and decided to instead start everyone on the same footing in Week 13. So it will be announced following the results of the Write Offs.

Which, speaking of the Write Offs, that's another thing that changed. I had intended them to be regular polls. I was created them. I was in the process of posting them. After an hour of weird error messages and the poll itself not showing up (to the point that I ended up checking to make sure my paid time hadn't expired, it hasn't. Yet. It's close though) I was at the point where I started considering other options. The one that made the most sense was to have a Contestant Only email poll.

Given that this is for who is moving forward, I might as well put it before a true Jury of Your Peers to make the call. Especially since the general readership was unable to make a clear decision.

I've had a few ineligible people email me - and I've had to let them know that I couldn't take their ballots. Which sucks. I would love to take as many votes as possible - but to be clear: Contestant Only means "if there was a poll posted RIGHT NOW, your name would be in it". (or could be in it, given that there is a Write-Off happening. :D)
If your name would be in the poll - I can take your ballot.

If not, then I can't.

Voting is VERY close again, but there are a lot of voices that haven't been heard from yet. So who knows how this will play out. You only have until tonight though - https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1034807.html

It’s a Write-off poolza!

2 polls.  1 person will be eliminated from each of them.

The Second Chance poll will decide who gets a shot to be in the main competition.

The main competition poll decides who gets to survive another day.

Both of them are Contestants Only. Which means you will email me your votes.

The Second Chance poll is

vs

The main competition poll is

The polls close Monday Jan 21st at 9pm EST.

Good luck to everyone!

There were two polls, but I'm only going to make one Results post. Because this is the big one. The one that everyone has been waiting to see how it was going to turn out.

And besides, this week had unexpected results in both polls. So we might as well just put all the "Wha..." responses all in one place.

We're start with the main competition, since that is also where we are going to end, and might as well make things circular.

Once again, I asked for the Jury for their picks for who would receive immunity this week, and once again, it was really close. This time it came down to *a single vote*. That's the theme of the mini season after all. Those close calls and the one vote that either came in, or didn't. In this case, that one vote gave someone immunity - and changed this week's results for a second week in a row.

Congratulations to kehlen- who received this week's immunity, who was actually on the chopping block this week. This means they survive another round.

Leaving us this week from the main competition and joining the jury is

the always great [personal profile] megatronix

who will definitely be missed.

Thanks to the immunity, we also have a 3-way tie for that second spot between [personal profile] codenamewanderlust , [personal profile] kimschlotwrites  and [personal profile] murielle . Which means there will be a Sudden Death Write-Off to determine who will be leaving us. More on that later.

Now for Second Chance, they had their own unexpected results. The people joining the Jury are:

[personal profile] alycewilson
[personal profile] oxymoron67
[personal profile] reidharriscooper
[personal profile] stellinas

I'm really sorry to be losing you, but I hope that we will be continuing to see you around with the Home Game, the Green Room and of course in your role as the Jury that is helping to shape how this all plays out.

Those joining the main competition, and in the hunt to win it all are

[personal profile] dmousey
[personal profile] itsjust_c
[personal profile] spilledink562 [personal profile] wolfden
[personal profile] yachiru

There are two names who are missing. Because they tied. Which means that the final spot, that last shot at getting into the main competition is coming down to a one-on-one literary slug fest between
[personal profile] babydramatic_1950  and [personal profile] blue_velvet ! It's another Sudden Death Write-Off!

***

For those in the Write-Offs, here are your instructions. It's Open Topic. Meaning you can write whatever you want.
You have until tomorrow, Sunday Jan 20th at 9pm EST to link your entries back to the dedicated thread below.

Have fun!

There are two polls happening right now - The main competition - https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1033913.html and the Second Chance - https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1033408.html

***

I was thinking about a couple things last night. Just a couple, I try not to let my brain loose "thinking about things" too often. It just encourages it to get into trouble.

One of those was the origin of the "bye" in Idol. I'm sure I've told this story. But I don't think it's been in awhile. At least a season or two. Which means most of you have heard it, but most of you have also forgotten it because it's not important in your life and/or trauma.

It actually ties into why I vote for everyone. Because in the first two seasons, neither of those concepts existed.

There were no byes and I cast my vote for the entries I liked.

People weren't immediately eliminated, because there wasn't any set number of polls you could miss. In fact, if you got an entry in, you were guaranteed to survive. The poll was only for those who had *missed* getting something in. It was essentially a "Does this person deserve another shot?" and people would eliminate the one(s) that they thought didn't. There weren't many of those - it was usually in the first few weeks of the season and eventually you weeded out the people who weren't submitting things and started the real game between those who were. But it was frustrating. To players. To readers. To me.

But there wasn't a "fix" I could think of in Reality TV, which, after all, was the inspiration behind LJ Idol. People didn't just suddenly get a break in the middle of a season. It took me part of Season 2 to figure out, that there *was* a precedent in my other favorite sport - football! Teams got bye weeks, where they would rest and prepare for the remainder of their season. Not every team had the same bye week, so they were staggered. It wasn't a perfect analogy, but it at least had the terminology and general idea of what I needed. So I planned it's release for Season 3!

The other thing that I had planned for that season was taking away my own individual vote.

It was something that I had gone back and forth with. After all- as the creator, shouldn't I get some sort of say in how the game turned out, at least as much as a random person off the street?

On the other hand, as the game was growing beyond my personal friends (which is was for Season 1 and then Season 2 was my friends plus some of their friends) I felt like there was a danger of my vote carrying *too* much influence. That my liking or not liking something might be seen as an endorsement rather than my personal taste.

So I took away my vote - and solved something that had been bugging me for awhile of seeing people without votes. I would just vote for everyone. That way every contestant would click on the link and see that at least one person was supporting them.

(Keep in mind that this was back when my assistant was putting together the polls. I wouldn't start doing that myself until partway through Season 4. So my vote wasn't always the first one)

Which brings me to that second thought. I started thinking of "What would MY criteria be for someone to get my vote." I was specifically thinking of Second Chance, where I was voting something into the game.

I think it would be different in different scenarios. As a reader/viewer - I'd want the best going against the best. Head to head showdown setting up massive confrontations. As a contestant? I don't know. I've never been in that situation, but the strategist in me thinks that I might be tempted to vote in the ones that I *didn't* think could beat me. (If they could or not, that's anyone's guess. I think that strategy might end up backfiring though if that person you think could be beaten ends up pulling out the stops and amazing everybody with their entries)

But since I'll never be in that situation where that has to be tested, how about YOU? When you consider your Second Chance vote (or any other vote, but this one seems more topical) do you consider just this one piece from them , the rest of their work in Second Chance (what you know they are capable of)? Do you factor in "Who has the best chance to go far/win?" and vote with that in mind to get the best "long term" match ups? A little bit of everything?

The countdown to the merge has started!

The Second Chancers are deciding who is going to make it: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1033408.html

and so are those in the main competition: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1033913.html

Who is going to survive? Once the collision happens - what will things look like as the dust begins to settle? Will the dust ever settle or will it just increase until there is zero visibility until the moment that one person emerges triumphant from the pile?

So far that dream I had is actually still (mostly) on track. (It was pretty vague) If there's even a little bit of truth in it, things are definitely about to get interesting! Even if it doesn't come true (and it probably won't, it's a dream, not a prophecy), I can see several potential storylines emerging and it's really going to be a treat to have a ringside seat on the coming slug fest!

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

I told the Second Chancers to bring it - and they brought it. Maybe the main competitor heard that challenge and decided that they were about to get some competition… or maybe they’ve just been this good all along! Only someone who has been reading the whole season knows! (Hint: They really all that good. This mini season is about to get crazy!) Aren’t you glad you tuned this week though - to see what “MacGuffin” ended up stirring up in the creative undercurrents?

Sadly, we have gained one more Jury member this week, with the bye-out of

[personal profile] jenwithapen

Hopefully she will be back on her feet and ready to rage against the cruel hands of fate soon enough. But for now, adieu! (and other foreign words)

Now for the rest of you - Congratulations. You have made the Top 20!

Enjoy it. Give yourself a pat on the back.

It won’t be a long pat though, since Second Chance will be joining you after this round and we will find out who the *final* Top 20 of this mini season are going to be!!

Before they show up though, we will be losing 2 more.

The poll closes Saturday Jan 19th at 8pm EST. If that day and time sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the exact same time the Second Chance poll closes! It should make for an interesting couple of days.

Good luck to everyone!

There is a Second Chance poll going on, with the highest stakes yet! https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1033408.html

There is a deadline for the main competition tonight: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1032678.html

There is also a question. It's one that I've been asked a few times over the years, and was recently asked it again a couple days ago.

It's an important question.

"Should I try to get my writing published?"

If you are at the point in your writing that you are asking that question - not "I'm awesome and I'm going to be the most famous writer EVER!" or "I just like writing for myself", then there is only one answer to that.

Yes.

Yes, you should be trying to get your work published.

You know it too, otherwise you probably wouldn't be asking the question. Maybe your work won't be right for the market you are trying/not what they are looking to publish. Maybe it'll be the wrong time.

But if you have that itch, you should try to scratch it.

Find someone who you trust to give you honest feedback, and who is a good enough writer that you think they have something to offer. Ask them to read and edit your work. (Even better - pay them to do it!) Talk about how to make it stronger.

Research your markets. Where do you want to be published. Is this something they are likely to be interested in? If not, can it be with a few tweaks? If not, is there something else you have that's better suited?

Keep banging your head against that wall. Persistence is a huge part of getting published. Persistence and a whole lot of luck. Talent keeps you in the conversation once you get in, but those two will help you get in the door.

***

There of course is a bigger conversation involved in this - which is "Do I have something to say?" Because if you aren't saying anything that's uniquely you - if someone can read a ton of other writers doing the exact same thing, with the exact same perspective, then why would they bother? It's the same in Idol as it is in the broader publishing world. You need for people to *care* about what you writing about, and part of that is writing a story that only you can give them.

The Final Second Chance deadline is TONIGHT at 7pm EST! So far there are only 2 people with entries in. Will who gets in this week become easier than anyone ever imagined? Or will there be a fight to the finish??? https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1031859.html

Will the Instagram Egg join the main competition?

Will Gillette decide this really is the best a man can get after all, and just give up?

The main competition has until *tomorrow night* to get entries in https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1032678.html so hopefully we will start seeing more action over there soon as well.

I'm taking the How Hard Has Aging Hit You Challenge!

Our first post in the LJ Idol community back on July 27th, 2006:

"You've been waiting for it, you've been craving it, now here it is!!!

THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - WE ARE COMING BACK FOR SEASON 2, AND THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO BE A PART OF THE FASTEST GROWING INTERNET SENSATION - LJ IDOL with your host, clauderainsrm!!!!

LJ Idol is coming back, better and bigger than ever.

This season will not begin until there are at least 20 contestents - that's twice the amount of the original season!

For those who don't know what LJ Idol is - it is a journal entry contest. No singing, no talent or swim suit portions... just good old fashioned writing entries in your journal.

Sometimes a topic will be chosen for you, sometimes it will be completely your own choice.

This post is the sign-up sheet. And yes, if you participated last time, but did not win, you are more than welcomed to try again this season!

Post here and let me know that you wish to join last season's winner tinhuviel as THE LJ IDOL!!!

Note: If you have already signed up in Gary's LJ on the original sign up sheet, there is no need to sign up on this one, as well (unless you just really want to lol). "

Let's see - first of all, my assistant Hilary wrote it. I was still figuring out how to navigate a community. (The season before was played at my personal journal.)

She uses lol more than I would. Although I was found of the *g* (for grin) due to people not often getting that I was joking and I didn't really like emoticons.

It was described as a "journal entry" competition. Which, to be fair, I didn't write that. But I approved it. The competition has certainly stretched its reach since then.

The topic being chosen for you - still the same. Your choice - that's now called "Open Topic".

We still have sign up sheets.

20 contestants being twice what it was in the original season. It was true then. The numbers are higher now. Even in this remote outpost we are only now hitting our Top 20. (or at least the first round of it)

How have YOU changed since your first journal entry?

There are times when I'm sitting back in delight, wondering what the reaction is going to be to a new topic.

There are other times when I'm more concerned about how a pre-planned topic is going to go over with the group.

This time?  This time I'm intrigued.  But my intrigue isn't the point of this thread.

The point is telling you that your topic is

MacGuffin

This should be interesting.

The deadline to link your entries back to this thread is Wednesday Jan 16th at 8pm EST.

Have fun!
