Thank You

I designed this mini season around the idea of a Literary Prize Fight, knowing that the theme could make this the most dramatic and competitive event yet.

It was a risk, bridging that line between blowing things apart with too much drama and just enough to get and keep people's attention.

Instead, almost everything I made available to help spur that potential drama was ignored and we end up with the two finalists agreeing to a tie and walking out pretty much hand in hand.

Damn hippies ruin everything. ;)

I think [personal profile] kathrynrose would be laughing her head off right now.

It's the second time in Idol history where we have ended in a tie, as well as being the second mini season to do that. The first was where it fit the concept. This time it ran contrary, but the voters just couldn't make up their minds! :D (For those interested, the next round in the process is a Community Only vote. As I've said, we went to that in Season 2.) I don't blame them. I would have had a difficult time picking between them as well. Two very different writers who both deserved the win.

***

A special thank you to [personal profile] jenwithapen  who helped me out getting this set up over here in Dreamwidth as well as stepping in to do some punch hitting while I was away.
And of course our two anonymous donors (and all those less anonymous donors over the course of the mini season!)

And thank you to all of YOU - those who competed as well as those supporting (and voting) from the sidelines. You are what helps make this experience special.

The off season might be restful for you, but it's always pretty busy for me. I mention this because out of sight and out of mind while everyone else is going about their lives, I'm cooking up the next season. :) So if you want to support that work - and are able to do so of course, please consider becoming a Patron Become a Patron!

If you are unable to, or just don't want to - but want to help in other ways, I have a big project coming up this summer in hopes of getting some fresh blood. If you want to take part in that, send me an email at clauderainsrm@gmail.com

I hope to see you all at the Homecoming

Until then, Dreslinski Out.

I really think that the voters just like to mess with me. Either that or they just don't want this mini season to end.

But, after a series of emails between the finalists, a decision was reached -

A Split Decision.

There was no knockout and they tied on points.

Which means we have two losers...

Oh wait, sorry, I meant to say two WINNERS!

Congratulations to both [personal profile] halfshellvenus  and[personal profile] sonreir !

A few words from Gary:

Once more into the breach my friends!

It’s Part 2 of the FINALE! The Sudden Death Write Off that will determine who will be the WiNNER of the Literary Prize Fight and who will suffer the final knockout.

Read. Comment. Vote for your favorite(s)!

The poll closes tomorrow night, Saturday May 4th at 10pm EDT

Good luck to both of you!

The name is still in transition since I kept changing it since it was announced. :)

But the meaning is still the same.

It's the person who the community wishes to honor with a special designation - a thank you for being there and a general "You make this place better".

I think it's telling that about 1/3 of the possible candidates ended up getting votes!

That tells me some very good things about this place and what people experienced in this particular mini season.

Another was that there were two "runaways" - people with a *lot* more votes than the rest of the field - between them I'd say at least one of their names was on at least 90% of the ballots received.

For awhile, I thought there was going to be a tie. That would have been true to form...

But then a few more votes came in and there was a clear winner.

Normally, there would be a part of me that would feel a great deal of sympathy for the person with the second highest number of votes - but I'm going to reveal something I normally wouldn't - that the person who almost tied specifically asked me if they could vote for the winner 3 times. ;)

(They can't - but I think it was really special that they asked for that to be done if they could)

So I don't think they are going to be upset about this outcome.

Your Kathrynrose Award goes to someone who you know, and clearly love, and who I agree has definitely helped to make this mini season better just by being around. More than most of you know actually.

Congratulations to the one and only [personal profile] murielle !

Please email me at clauderainsrm@gmail.com  and let me know your gift card preference, so that I can let our benefactor know!

Good Morning, or whatever time it is when you read this.

Last night, we had the results of our FINALE!! Only to find out, due to yet another tie in this mini season of ties, it was just the first stage in the finale. https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1066088.html

***

I also confirmed via email with those handling Kate's memorial that not only is it OK to have the Kathrynrose Spirit of Idol award - but that next season there WILL be a prize for the recipient, that they will be donating.

It makes me wish we had been in a place to set something up for Siggy after Luna died. Which is kind of the opposite of what I'm talking about... but that's how my brain is working right now.

Anyway, this has been a rough mini season emotionally. I'm going to celebrate the winner and get started on the next full season - but in between I'm definitely going to try my best to get some rest in there as well! :)

It's the finale!

The last hurrah of Literary Prize Fight. One last poll to finally decide who was going to win.

This is Idol though, and this is the LPF mini season.

Which means that plan did not happen.

It ended in a two way tie.

Which means we, once again, go into a Sudden Death Write Off!

[personal profile] halfshellvenus  and[personal profile] sonreir - you need to get ready to rumble, again.

The deadline to link your entries back to the below thread is tomorrow, May 3rd at 10pm EDT.

Which means that we have some sad news as well.

We are saying goodbye to [personal profile] hwango .

He's been an amazing amount of fun all mini season long - not just the writing, but the personality as well.

Over the last couple of weeks - it's been dodging one bullet after another, with an exciting run that kept everyone guessing how long he would dodge and weave. It turns out - all the way to the finale!

I'll admit, I kind of thought that maybe this would be a hwango victory lap. But alas, earwax.

Thank you so much for coming out for LPF and bringing such joy to the process week after week!

When I posted about the Not-a-spirit award, I remembered that I had a name for it. But I couldn't think of it at the time. You know how those things just slip out of focus when you need them. And I hadn't written it down, so that was no use.

Survivor actually had been the one to name it - The Fan Favorite Award. The first one ever given was to Rupert in All Stars. He ended up winning the exact same amount as Amber (who won the season), just for being popular. :)

This of course is a little different in that it's the other contestants voting - but it's the same principle, so I've changed the subject line of that post. :)

***

I considered naming it after kathrynrose - but she hated money being involved with Idol at all. So I don't think she would like that. I'll check with her estate though, they might have a different feeling...

Tinhuviel? She hated people. :D Maybe rebrand the title of winner after the original? I don't know...

Alex? Aled was an amazing writer, but he really didn't hang out with a lot of the other contestants.

Luna? Already has a Idol award named after her.

Erica_crawford? Not really her style either. Same with walkertxkitty - although there really should be something named after her...

lee_hawk? Oh man, same. I need to come up with something for that.

and of course kittymichaels won everything, So his only reward was getting to be kittymichaels. :)

For right now though it's just the Fan Favorite Award - and the deadline to get me your votes is tomorrow: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1065725.html

***

There's one more vote happening right now though - and it's to decide who wins this mini season!!! So it's kind of important. I guess. If you're into that sort of thing. :)

I wasn't going to have a "Spirit of the Mini Season" award. Because it doesn't exist. Those are only for full seasons. (Unless of course I got bored and distracted one year and decided to do one. Oops. :D)

So this is NOT a "spirit of LJ Idol" award announcement. It's a Fan Favorite announcement!

I did however talk with someone who wanted to do "something extra" for the winner of this season.

I talked them into something different - giving a little something to someone who DIDN'T make the Top 4.

This isn't "who is the best writer who didn't win" or the "person who embodies the LJ Idol Spirit". This is 100% a popularity contest. :)

An award for the person who you just feel deserves to be awarded for their contributions over the course of this mini season.

What is on the line is a $100 gift card (the winner will pick where, or just a general VISA).

I'm going to give you until Friday May 3rd at 7pm EDT to send me an email to clauderainsrm@gmail.com - listing your Top 3 choices.

The person with the most votes, wins the gift card.

Only people who have competed in this mini season are eligible and they are the only ones who are eligible to vote!

Good luck to everyone!

Do I want to stir people up this morning?

Hmmm... sure...

Uber was guilty of trusting that people weren't asshats. Unfortunately, people are.

They probably should have considered that someone was going to exploit their auto response. But it takes a real shithead to do that - and it takes someone who is going out of their way to find a problem with the company to think that they did it deliberately. I don't mean the ones who saw it initially and reacted with their gut impulse. I'm thinking more of the ones who came in hours later, after the apology was already up and Uber was giving people discounted rides, who just wanted to go off on the racist company.

I was going to link an article, but honestly, most of the ones I could find seem to just be exploiting the situation for hits and/or giving attention to troll's account.

So, since most of you probably don't know what the hell I'm talking about - because that's 99% of these posts, I'll pull back a bit and explain...

Uber, like a lot of businesses, has an auto response. I'm going to use Murielle as an example name.

If she had something to say to Uber, like "I had problems using your app", they would write back "Sorry to hear that Murielle" with the support contact information.

It makes sense from a business standpoint of why you would want to address customers by name. It also makes sense that someone would try to troll that feature.

In this case, again, let's say it's Murielle - because that makes it far more shocking, she changes her name to (the N-word). Because that's what the troll did.

Now you know what auto response would end up tweeting.

After getting the response, Murielle then changed her name back, so anyone looking it at thinks the Uber auto response team is just really really racist monsters.

I'm NOT saying that the company shouldn't have seen this coming and put filters in place. They probably should have. But I can also see why it would never really occur to someone to do.

Uber has a lot of problems. Which is why there are protests scheduled. But I think it's a mistake to go after the company being exploited harder than people seem to be going after the troll who used the word as a bait and switch to get the company to say it.

Of course, I'm sure there are people who will say I'm wrong - OK, I'm fine with learning more on what I'm missing in the subtext, so feel free to let me know!

I'm coming from a position as someone who has had a few people using "offensive" user names. (Nowhere near that word just things that were designed to get a reaction) I had to post them in the poll, because that was their name. I do wonder though where that line would be - I'm not an auto response after all. Hopefully no one ever decides to push that. But I'm sure, being the internet, at some point, some troll will.

***

You don't have to be a troll like Murielle to be interested in finale poll! https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1064830.html

It closes tomorrow night. So make sure to get your votes in!

We've made it to the finale without anything fraying, until a little bit last night! But that's still really good!
https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1064830.html

Or bad, maybe the people WANT drama - there were more comments yesterday than almost anything else this season. :)

One of the things brought up though got me thinking - what degree of privacy do you expect from the internet?

Most folks have different filters set up via different sites. But sometimes though filters fail.

When they do - is it the fault of the server provider for changing something or the fault of the person putting it out there knowing the risk?

Is the latter just victim blaming? It got me curious because every time I think I know "the rules" of internet privacy, it turns out that something has shifted in internet culture.

I know that *I personally* expect that my settings with stay in place as the default. I've always seen it as part of the social contract between myself and the provider. But in researching, I ran across others who thought my position was naïve and overly trusting - and that if I didn't want the information out there, I should never put it out there, even behind a filter.

Thoughts?

A few words from Gary:

This is definitely going to be an interesting finale.

3 talented writers who all submitted perfect representations of just how good they are.

Something that I personally found interesting was that this is the first time in Idol Mini Season history that the writers in the finale didn’t use “Open Topic” as an excuse to write the traditional Idol finale of “why I should win/why my opponent should win”.

I’m going to interpret that as people finally listening to me! :)

This is also the first finale where I’ve started it on muscle relaxers!

I did something to my lumbar region - sudden sharp pains aren’t fun. It’s why I was out of commission this weekend. I spent most of the morning today at the doctor’s office and then going for a X-Ray. The fun never stops. But thanks to the miracle of muscle relaxers I’m mostly here for the finale! :)

And what a finale it is!

I sincerely love the work all three of these folks have produced for Literary Prize Fight!

I’m really happy to have them representing the competition at this level.

They took different paths to get here. But all are worthy of the crown. Note: there is no actual crown.

Only one is going to take it though.

That is up to YOU, the voter, to decide!

The poll will be open until Thursday May 2nd at 9pm EDT.

So read, comment and vote for your favorites!

This one is for all the marbles. Note; there are no marbles being given out. This time around I wasn’t even able to get an icon made. The prize went to the Top 4. So everyone in it right now already has that.

This is all about the glory, and being the last writer standing!

Good luck to everyone!

Between Avengers Endgame and Game of Thrones I think a lot of folks are going to be spending the next week in therapy.

If that wasn't true though - there is still one major epic battle scene about to happen - the Literary Prize Fight finale!

The deadline for everyone to get their entries in is TONIGHT https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1063949.html

which means the poll is about to get started!

I promise not to post any spoilers about how the poll is going to turn out! Mostly because I have no idea. Someone should ask Stephen Strange or Bran. I'm pretty sure they've already seen this play out! Maybe that's why they are hiding so no one bugs them about it!

Go to Google.

Search for "Thanos".

There will be a picture of the Infinity Gauntlet on the right side. Click it. Then wait.

Google, as always, has found a way to make special days on the internet fun.

***

If you go to Google, and search for LJ Idol Final Three the first result is from Season 3. Which featured agirlnamedluna, the first Idoler we ever lost. So, I guess that's fitting. Google, once again, has found a way to tie everything together.

But if you are looking to search for our current Final 3, just go to the results from last night: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1063820.html and see who we lost.

The three remaining contestants have a new deadline: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1063949.html

halfshellvenus
hwango
sonreir

One of these three will claim the title of Winner of the Literary Prize Fight!

If the rest of this mini season is any indication, this is going to be a slugfest!

I knew the results this week were going to suck.

With a Top 4 like this - you knew it too.

We were going to lose someone talented. Someone special to the community.

True to form, that is what ended up happening.

We are losing [personal profile] bleodswean  this week, in what is becoming a trend you can mark on your calendar - that she will write amazing stories and make it easily into the Top 5 gathering new fans as she goes.

That she's a really talented writer is obvious but I think the under reported story though is how much she loves Idol.

We have our differences when it comes to, well, a lot of things :D - but at the core there is a love of writing and of this community that shines through every word she "speaks".

In a year where we have lost so many old friends, it's nice to know that over the last few years we have gained some really good new ones.

Thank you E - for coming out this mini season and helping to make it special.

The poll closes TONIGHT https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1063125.html

End Game officially starts showing TONIGHT.

I don't have spoilers for either, but I'm sure both are going to be a great ride. Grab your popcorn. (or even better, VOTE to help determine how that first one is going to go. I'm not sure that Thanos really cares one way or another about your opinion on how Endgame turns out)

There are some serious events happening over the next couple of weeks: Game of Thrones is ending, End Game is closing out a cycle of Marvel movies that have been happening for over a decade. And of course, our Literary Prize Fight is coming to a close with fight scenes that rival both of those events: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1063125.html

We might not have the big budget explosions happening on screen, but we've got the "Man, that's good!" explosions happening in your brain when you read what the Top 4 have submitted. Well, that and the explosive charges I've set around your house - but those are just for fun!

and of course, tonight is both Survivor AND the Amazing Race! So life is pretty fully right now.

Well, if life can be defined as "things I'm watching on a screen", which, I'm pretty sure that's the definition.

I just started Barry as well...

What sort of screen-filled life are YOU enjoying right now? Or are you doing that fake "actually going outside" thing?

A few words from Gary:

And then there were four.

It sounds like the start of something dramatic and exciting. Something to fill folk with dread.

If it does, then you’ve come to the right place.

Because when this poll closes, we will have three contestants left standing!

So make sure to read, comment and vote for your favorites! Because the finale is right around the corner, and one of them is going to be your winner!

Who it will be isn’t going to be decided this week - but we’re getting closer, so that should definitely be something on your mind.
These four certainly aren’t making it easy.

The poll will be closing Thursday, April 25th at 9pm EDT! It’s a small window to make a huge decision!

Good luck to everyone!

It's Easter weekend, or 420 weekend depending on your point of view.  Either way involves hallucinations about giant bunnies bringing you candy to much on.

Or the feeling of coming back to life after being stuck in a cave.

It's really surprising that these days don't always fall on the same weekend when you think about it. ;)

I'm only sort of celebrating the first one and find the second annoying. :)  Only that second one gives me a headache to be around though,  Well, OK, maybe the former can at times as well. :D

***

Seriously though - Happy Easter. Hopefully you are doing something special with family or close friends.

We didn't have any plans so apparently we will be celebrating by going out to the Thai Temple, a local Buddhist that has a delicious marketplace, We're hoping that the crowds will not light tomorrow.
