It came down to a single vote.  Maybe it was yours. Maybe yours was the vote that could have changed the outcome.

There were 2 votes away from turning it into a 3-way tie.  I have to wonder if that is a sign of what this mini season is going to be like... I suspect it is.

He signed up "to be canon fodder" so that other writers didn't have to be voted out first - and sure enough, that's what happened. But there is certainly nothing wrong with what he submitted over the last couple of weeks!

Today is goodbye to [personal profile] vik_thor

Hopefully you will continue to home game. It's always great to see you, and thank you for your continued love for this community!

The poll closes tomorrow night.  Have you been reading?  Have you been voting? (I can say from the number of votes, and checking to see who has/hasn't voted that the majority of you should be saying "Not yet" for that last question.)   therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1144477.html

Every vote is critical to someone's survival. So make sure to get out and support the entries you love! Are there any entries that you don't think are getting enough attention? Now is the perfect time to call them out and stump for them!

Voting is off to a slow start this week. But then again, the posts were the same way.  ;)

If that is any indicator, there will be a rush of votes at the very end!!!

***

I usually watch all of the political conventions - and write commentary on them. But this year, I'm not sure I have it in me. I will say this though from the brief bit I've seen (so far) of the RNC, that the two times that I've seen Brian Wilson he was in his late 70s. He couldn't hit all the notes anymore but surrounded himself with backup singers who could. It was a smart way of doing it for people who wanted the Brian Wilson experience.

No, Brian Wilson wasn't at the RNC (that would have been a huge shock if he had been)

Who was there though was Lee Greenwood, who has managed to make an entire career out of being an one-hit wonder.  (I checked and he had 20 songs that charted, so he doesn't actually qualify as an "one hit wonder",  but come on, we all know him from one song.  :D)

I mentioned Wilson because Greenwood also has lost the vast majority of his vocal fastball. But based on what I saw/heard, he's not acknowledging that.  His voice is still OK, but wow, time is rarely kind to any of us. He may want to consider getting some more backup singers around him for these important/high visibility moments.

Considering the two major candidates for US political office, I'm wondering how Biden is going to top Greenwood.... any non-relevant singers out there in their 90s available?  ;)

***
Note, I say all of this having recently seen Bob Dylan earlier this year!  But at least he was never known for having a great vocal range.  :D
I also saw Pinetop Perkins, who needed assistance getting on and off the stage. But in his case blues artists are SUPPOSED to be really old and weary. It's kind of weird to see young blues singers.  It feels like they haven't quite earned it yet.  ;)

It's official - As of next Monday I will be employed again!

So look for me complaining about how awful my job is posts in about 3 weeks.  :)

Seriously though, I'm pretty excited. It should only minimal impact on Idol, but we will see. I'll just have to keep deadlines in the evenings and on weekends. '

***
Speaking of Idol deadlines - the new poll is up    therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1144477.html
so make sure you are reading, commenting and voting for your favorites!!!

Let's see, what has been going on this weekend... *scans the news* Doesn't look like much of anything.

Just a normal everyday weekend here in the US.

Oh, Richard Simmons died. That was sad... Dr Ruth, Shannon Doherty...

Hmmm... what else...

OH! Yeah, the news that everyone is talking about, the Week 2 poll just went up!   therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1144477.html

That's pretty big news, all around the world!

***

For real though - i am glad that former President is OK. I can't say "this isn't Amercia", because anyone who remembers the 60s, 70s, and into the early 80s knows better than that. But it's certainly not who we ASPIRE to be.

Let's be who we say we are.

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

Welcome to the Week 2 poll! There were quite a few byes this time, which (1) is going to maek the next couple of weeks more challenging to navigate and (2) means that readers will be able to have more time to read and interact with the entries out there! Hopefully you take advantage of that, because there are a lot of good entries out there to enjoy!

There’s really nothing more that I need to say this week other than - Read. Comment and vote for your favorites! Your votes are the difference between them staying in to entertain you for another week and them going home! So make sure to support what you love, and spread the word about what you are enjoying!

The poll closes Thursday July 18th at 9pm ET. The contestant with the fewest votes will be eliminated.
Good luck to everyone!

The New York Times released their full list of Best Books of the 21st Century list   www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/books/best-books-21st-century.html

and I'm honored to say that 99 of them were my Idol posts!! I'm not sure how these qualify as "books", but I'm just grateful for the acknowledgement. I'm sure they are busy with all of the editorials about advocating for both Trump AND Biden to drop out of the Presidential race.  I'm glad they haven't asked ME to drop out yet.  Probably because I haven't officially thrown my hat in.... because I only have a couple hats and can't really afford to just be throwing them into rings to get stomped on or lost.

Perhaps they are busy writing an editorial to advocate for getting me a new hat that I can then throw in... or maybe a used one that's already beaten up so I wouldn't care if it got damaged. That might be better.

***
I've substituted the Idol posts originally listed with other books in the above link, with other books by up-and-comers that I felt deserved some attention. How many of the 100 have you read? Which ones are now on your "I should check that out!" list based on the descriptions?

***
Remember that your own deadline is coming up soon - Sunday at noon ET. Still a LOT of people haven't posted yet, so this is going to be a busy couple of days!  therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1143356.html

(or, I guess a massive bye-fest... I guess we will see how that shakes out...)

I was asked a question that required some digging into the Idol archives and wow, some of that really hit hard. (and i'm not just talking about the sheer amount of Russian ads that pop up when you go over to LJ!)

There were some stuff that still amused me, and some dramatic parts - but seeing names of people who have since died, that was like a weight free falling from the scaffolding and landing right on me.

Hopefully this special "immunity from death" potion that I'm passing out to everyone works. Unless it's Opposite Day, in which case this mini season is going to be even shorter than expected!

***
The library just let me know that the DVDs for X and Pearl finally came in. I just need to go pick them up. And of course my Google News update for today was about how the star of those movies, Mia Goth, is alleged to have kicked some extra in the head, followed him to the porta potty and told him "“Nobody will believe you because you’re nothing. Get the f- off my set, you big baby.”

Which of course means that I will be filing a lawsuit against her for infringement on my trademark move, and phrase. Sure, she changed "damn hippie" to "big baby", but it's pretty clear that it's just a blatant ripoff and that I'm guaranteed to be living off the judgement and/or settlement money well into retirement.

***
While you are waiting to be kicked in the head by me, hopefully you are being kicked in the head by ideas for this week's prompt: therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1143356.html

I had another interview yesterday that seemed to go pretty well. Who knows though... I've been walking out of most of them feeling good. Maybe I'm just delusional.  :)

Did anyone have ideas that popped right into their head when they saw the prompt? Anyone having difficulties with it?

How is your week going so far?

[personal profile] clauderainsrm
For those new to Idol (and those who may not remember) for prompts there are some weeks where the the prompt is literally just an interesting word I came across.

This is one of those weeks. Sometimes I will supply you with the definition, sometimes I won't.  This time, I will.

Your jumping off point of inspiration this week is

Sankofa

(definition per https://www.berea.edu/centers/carter-g-woodson-center-for-interracial-education/the-power-of-sankofa
)

"Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana. The literal translation of the word and the symbol is it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.”"

The deadline to link your entry back to this post is Sunday July 14th at Noon ET.

This week has actually been going by faster than expected. As soon as I say that though, that means today is going to DRAG...

***

I've just started listening to audio books.  Yes, I said "just started" as in on my second one, ever.  I just like reading physical books! But it occurred to me that since I listen to podcasts, with the *right* book, I might be able to just listen to it... so I'm trying it out.

What have been some of your favorite AUDIO BOOK experiences?

Oh, and there is a new prompt. You should probably get to writing if you haven't already started! therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1104538.html

How are you doing today?

[personal profile] clauderainsrm
I got a phone call from my boss yesterday, but didn't see it right away.

It was followed by a phone call - and then two more texts - from my team lead for me to call them ASAP.

I knew it wasn't going to be good if they were interrupting my day off.

When I finally got back to them, this is what I found out:

That my company had lost the contract in Pinellas county (NOT my county/circuit) to run the foster care system and so had ALSO decided to surrender their contract for MY county/circuit as well.

It was either a negotiation tactic gone wrong or a corporate version of a temper tantrum with people's jobs on the line. Either way, it wasn't good.

As it stands now... unless there is a change, my job ends in June.  Which is more certainty than a lot of people have right now if you squint when you look at it.  :)

But hopefully either (1) something will be worked out and they will end up staying OR (2) the new company hired to run the system will onboard the existing staff, which has been known to happen...

So that's how MY day went yesterday! How was YOURS?  ;)

It's the FINAL week of Second Chance.

Just one more time to go to the well and come out with some magic before you are competing against the rest of the field, already in progress.

Which is why this is an

Open Topic.

There's no set topic, just bring your A-game and write whatever you want to write. Just make it awesome!

The deadline to link your entry back to this thread is Tuesday, Jan 15th at 7pm EST.

I knew coming in that Second Chance was going to be brutal.

It's living up to expectations, with difficult decisions being made every week.

This week was no different. The one "saving grace" of it is that everyone leaving us from this week on will be joining the Jury. Including members of Second Chance. So they might not be in the game, but they *will* be helping to shape the rest of this season.

If I don't already have your address - make sure to send it to me at clauderainsrm@gmail.com so that I can make sure you are on the Jury emails.

So instead of saying "leaving us", I will say "Joining the Jury".

It sounds better and makes it easier.

Our newest Jury members are:

[personal profile] adoptedwriter
[personal profile] flyingsockpuppet
[personal profile] tjoel2
[personal profile] zaichikarky

Thank you so much for coming out. I really appreciate it, and I hope that we will continue to be abe to read your work in the Home Game. (and I'll see you on the Jury!)

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

There are “bad words” in the English language. Things you shouldn’t say in “polite company”.

But since circumstances call for them right now, and since you are hardly what would be considered “polite company”, I can say them -[personal profile] sorchawench has dropped out of Second Chance due to RL.

Those are very bad, and sad, words. I’m sorry that I had to use them. I hope you made sure there were no children in the room.

I hope we will see her in the Home Game.

As for the rest of you - you know the drill.

There’s a poll. You read the entries. You comment. You vote for as many of them as you feel like supporting.

There are 15 contestants who are still standing. We will be losing the bottom 4 contenders.

The poll closes Saturday Jan 12th at 9pm EST.

Good luck to everyone!

The results from Week 1 are now official, so the group trying to fight their way into the main competition gets a little smaller.

This week the topic is also kind of straight forward. But there are plenty of twists to be had, depending on how you choose to interpret the word.

What is it?

It's

Shade

It's that time again, and this one hurts.

Don't get me wrong, it would hurt regardless of who was leaving, but I think this one is a little more personal to me since one of those people

[personal profile] vik_thor

referenced  the legendary Brad Dowdy (of the Pen Addict podcast) in this week's entry.  You can check out the podcast at https://www.relay.fm/penaddict  and Brad's blog at https://www.penaddict.com/   Brad was one of the people who inspired this week's topic. So seeing someone go out for writing about them was a little rough. Especially since there were also a reference to the late great Fran/walkertxkitty. That caught me by surprise to see her name on someone's personal Mount Rushmore.  Definitely well deserved for her to be there. But I wasn't prepared for it, so it caught my breath a bit when I realized...

I'll also admit that I still have the obituary from the paper from when Asimov died, that was a devastating blow. Teenage Gary used to devour his stuff. Especially the non-fiction (but the science fiction and mysteries as well)

Aside from Vik, we are losing one other. And it's funny because I was in a very tense car ride to make it home on time so I didn't have to risk DW not being able to close a poll on my phone.  (That was an issue over at LJ) and at one point it was looking like a 5-way tie for that final spot. It came down to a single vote.  Which is as close as you can get.

Unfortunately, we are also losing someone that I know was sick for a good part of the week, and who I hope is feeling better, surrounded by all the pittens in the world. Because pittens are totally a thing now.  If they are not, technically, a thing, someone needs to get on that and make it happen!

Goodbye as well to [personal profile] yamyam_kat

Thank you both for coming out and supporting Idol in this great Literary Prize Fight! I hope that you will Home Game and that when Second Chance opens up later this mini season, that we will see you back in the fray to take one more shot at the crown!
