[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] therealljidol
The topic is due today: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811500.html
along with the Home Game/Killing Floor entry: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811580.html

So make sure you have those in?

If you haven't - you are on the LIST OF SHAME!!http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/812992.html

The Internet says that you can't shame people anymore - but we're doing it anyway!! TAKE YOUR SHAME!!!!

***

There was a really good idea that came up out of the shame, for people to act as each other's resources: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/812992.html?thread=78115008#t78115008 You should definitely check that out and add your own areas of expertise!

Now, I have a surprise for you - because I don't usually go around saying "Go check out this group" - and really, when you do, just make sure you come right back here to hang out again. :)

But if you get the chance, you might want to pop your head over to the LJ group [livejournal.com profile] little_details. Consider it "In the spirit of Livejournal harmony" gesture. :) Some of you already know about it. But for those who don't - tell them LJ Idol sent you! :)

***

What was your biggest accomplishment this weekend?

First?!?

Biggest accomplishment? Getting most of my stuff together for Fancy Cocktail Office Party Type Thing is weekend (it's my husband's work, not mine, believe me!)

However, I have discovered that long half slips seem to be an obscure item now. I need one for my skirt and I cannot find one in my size anywhere.

THE CAST IS REMOVED ON THURSDAY!!!! They're also going to be making the determination if I need surgery. If I do, I think my coworkers will be seeking me out with pitchforks...

I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you don't need to have surgery! So that way you can keep a cast off for good. <3

Biggest accomplishment this weekend:

Not killing (most of) my fellow associates Saturday morning.

I just.

It's been a bad week, okay?

I finished one of the hats I'm giving to my co-workers. Now I have two more to make. Never let your co-workers know you can make cute berets or they will all want one. On the plus side, I get to play with fun multicolored yarn.

See, every time I go into a craft shop I gaze wistfully at the knitting/crochet area because, no matter how many times people have tried teaching me both, I've never been able to pick up either :/

OTOH maybe it's a good thing because I know I'd go nuts over all the yarn!

[livejournal.com profile] little_details looks really neat and super useful! Thanks for pointing it out to us!

Also, that is a BRILLIANT idea over on the list of shame. It really thrills me to see stuff like that, where we help each other out with writerly stuff. :D

My in-person writer's group met last night, and getting all the reading done for that and playing hostess and generally being social was probably my biggest accomplishment of the weekend. That, and I got some holiday decorations up. With the kittens still being awfully rompy, I didn't feel comfortable putting up a tree this year, so instead I just hung things on the halloween decorations (I tend to leave those up and have a spooky holiday anyway). So now there's bacon ornaments and dancing frogs and santas and katamaris hanging from the big spider web in the living room and the brains-and-bones decorations between the kitchen and dining room. It's ridiculous and I love it.

No accomplishments for me this weekend. I'm feeling on the edge of holiday funk. Ah, wait, I did write my Idol piece...that was an accomplishment....but not a cheery uplifting piece of writing.

I need to begin my yearly viewing of all "A Christmas Carol" adaptations! There are so many and I love them all. Madly. This will cheer me up. Anyone have a particular favourite of their own?

I cannot seem to commit to an Idol entry to post onto the Killing Floor. :( ....leading the lambs to slaughter....

I have a new accomplishment: I finally typed up the Pile O' Scrap Paper Notes that was cluttering up my desk and wrote a page and a half of the real beginning of the Story That's Eating My Life.

I keep having to tell myself "it's only a draft, it's okay if you wander all over the place." Don't try to write drafts if you've ever taught English Composition, that's my advice to you.

I struggle with this, too. And have finally learned to just write in small scenes and then storyboard later. Nabokov wrote all of his novels on 3x5 cards as he walked around a town pond in the mornings.

Good for you for getting started! 2015!

I tutored yesterday and attended that Big, Fat, Multi-cultural Wedding all day on Saturday. Wow! It was the event of a lifetime! It was so beautiful. I can't begin to describe the splendor and passion that went into the day and the joy everyone felt. I'm so glad I had such an opportunity. Hindu service, Catholic service plus the "Hindu-Rican" reception! ( the bride's term). Best music EVER!

I've got stuff posted! Wooo! I dithered a long time about what to put where, but finally decided to go against the grain. Heh.

I've made a few comments in the Killing Floor / Home Game thread, but I'm not sure how many more I'll have time for today. I'm starting with folks who have fewer comments, to make sure they get some feedback (with the exception of Ro's thread, where I was summoned by name. Heh). I hope I'll have time to get to bunches of pieces, but there's yet stuff to do that doesn't involve me sitting and thinking and having Opinions at a keyboard, alas.

Yep, I'm trying to do the less-commented ones, too. I will freely admit that I am not very good at concrit. Spelling and grammar, yes, but I don't have the touch for looking at story structure etc. that some do.

And the people left in the game don't need much help with spelling and grammar!

I finished my first draft late last night (as in 12:30), because all writing seems to drag these days. Ugh.

I also did some Xmas shopping (but failed on my trouble people, who are still challenging- and that includes both kids!), and I put up probably all the outside lights I'll get to this year. Which leaves the INSIDE lights, the inside decorations, decorating the tree, and the baking explosion that will probably start next weekend.

This is where I wish Idol would slow down even more for a bit, until after Xmas. Yikes.

Have a penguin.

Achievement unlocked: Christmas tree.

Achievement unlocked: Idol entry written. (This one took forever, and I still scaled back five times.)

I did post my areas of expertise, then decided it constituted "too much information." I'll post a revised edition at some point. (But then, I'm not sure there's much on there that the rest of the community doesn't already have covered in some capacity. I'm generally a "master of none" sort.)

We did our Christmas tree, too! Well, I say "we", by which I mean "me and the kids" while hubby played zombie games because that's apparently more important than doing a once-a-year exciting activity with your children.

You only get a certain number of Christmases when they're kids...

I went to the Great Dickons Christmas Faire (to give the full title this weekend) and managed to restrain my cold enough to not rudely cough or sneeze on any other fairgoers.

Really my accomplishment of the weekend was always having a tissue handy, and this cold can be over now.

Oh my god that community *glomps and joins at once* even though I doubt I will need to post there.

The biggest accomplishment of my weekend was accidental. I came across the AO3 (archive of our own for works of fanfiction) account of someone who is writing an absolutely adorable anonymous fic for a kinkmeme, and I am now reading their other works. <3

(A kinkmeme, well, from what I have seen it's an LJ community or a tumblr where people come up with all sorts of twisted and kinky or just plain fluffy and impossible alternate universe ideas to their favourite books and movies, post requests that someone please write on the prompt, and sometimes someone does.

Well, over 50% of those writings is rubbish, another 20% mediocre childish attempts, but about 10 "fills" out of 100 are super awesome stories you can not stop reading and hoping that they were or are going to be finished. Which also does not happen that often on the kinkmeme journals.)

Kink memesssssss. <3 <3 <3

I am so fond of them (you can find more active ones at dreamwidth, in my experience), I have determined that I have "made" it as an author if a kinkmeme is created for any one of my universes.

Well, that, and a tvtropes page. :D

My biggest achievement this weekend was not squishing my youngest boy child.

He ran away at (local big store) and I had 25 minutes of increasingly frantic searching and loudspeaker announcements until I found him hiding in a clothes rack.

I was pretty sure he hadn't left, because we got to the door pretty quick and I left my 10-year-old there while I looked. But it was scary and maddening.

Oh, he ran away because when you're Christmas shopping you don't buy something for yourself.

Also, I found a major security vulnerability in my second week at work. I am honestly surprised at how much I remember after 4.5 years, and how much easier it is than last time I did web work (which was two jobs ago). I think my mental models have improved or something.

25 minutes! I am very sorry you had to go through that.

As for your work having improved, I have also found that after some knowledge marinates for sometime in your head, and you don't use it at all, you often improves in leaps and bounds after you access it again. I don't know why that is. Probably you are still learning subconsciously.
