The wheel has claimed its first victim.

Goodbye to [personal profile] vik_thor

At this point, he is our Francesca!

Losing someone is always difficult, and the longer we go, the more difficult it becomes.  The one positive this time around is that the wheel is fickle and there is no telling when it will allow people to return.

Thank you for coming out, and I hope we will continue to see you around to root for your favorites!

One of you has been poisoned.

While you were sleeping, while you were reading entries and living your "best life", there was something stirring in the depths of Idol Manor.

Something dangerous.

Everything is not what you see on the surface, for there are Killers in this castle.

Cold blooded killers whose weapon of choice is a slow acting poison!!

if they choose you as their victim, first you will start losing byes  (For the gamers out there, think of them as "extra hearts" or even "health points") once those are gone, the next round you will be dead and have your remains carried out of the competition.

There is hope though. Whoever "wins" each week (has the most votes) will be given an antidote.  They can take it themselves or give it to someone else. If they guess correctly, then that person is cured. If they don't, then the antidote has no effect.

Following the completion of each "Week", the contestants remaining in the competition will have the chance to vote on who they believe the killers are. If you guess correctly, that Killer is revealed and eliminated.

Each week, the Killers are given a choice - they can either poison someone, or recruit someone to join their death cult!  Once selected, you are a Killer. If you opt out of the invitation, you will be automatically poisoned.

This game within the game (mini-game) keeps going until either everyone has been poisoned or the Killers have all been exposed.  (or the Top 5, whichever of those comes first)

(and yes, once eliminated, regardless of how, of course you are eligible when the wheel decides to let people back into the competition. But come on, that's not as fun as saying "THERE'S MURDER IN THE CASTLE!!!!" )

And no, you will not know if you are the one poisoned until, well, you are no longer with us.   Good luck.  Sweet dreams!!!

The poll is open until tomorrow. therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1185269.html

Then we will see what else the Wheel of Chaos has in store for us all!!

Have any Week 1 entries caught your attention, and kept it?

How are you doing?

We went to see 28 Years Later yesterday. It was good, but I wish I had known it was the first movie in a new trilogy. It would have made the ending seem less abrupt!

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

Welcome to the long dark teatime of your soul, a place that will haunt your nightmares and amuse your hopes and dreams until they realize that we know exactly where they are hiding, but they are safe there - Idol isn’t going to take them out (kill!), at least not for now.

No guarantees on later though. For the moment it’s only your nightmares who are in danger. Because I am the only nightmare in your life. All of the others need to cede ground and acknowledge when they are in the presence of a professional!!!

It’s that time in Week 1 where I say a few words and post a poll.

So - here are the words:
One of you will be randomly selected to receive an email. So be checking your Inbox. If you don’t receive one, then the wheel didn’t pick you. For now. Once you receive it, you will have a couple choices to make. Your game may be decided on what you choose, and without any doubt other people’s games definitely will be impacted by it as well.

Nothing quite like a vague sword hanging over everyone’s head to get things started off right!!!

So now, some other words - Thank you to everyone who has come out. It means a lot to me for you to be here. It’s a small group, but it promises to be a fun one, filled with weeks of great writing! Probably even more “cursing my name” sessions, but also great writing!

We aere off to a solid start with Week 1 and I want to encourage everyone, especially those new here to do the 4 important things over the next few days.

Read. Part of the fun of this whole thing is getting to read other people’s work. Do it!!
Comment on their entries. Everyone loves feedback! You like it. I like it. I think it’s fair to say that no one wants their work to just go out into a vacuum. Give them some love!
Vote for your favorites!!! You can cast votes for as many (or few) entries as you want. Yes, for participants you CAN vote for yourself. Honestly, if you’re not vouching for you, why would someone else? But I know people feel differently on the subject, so I’ll just say you can if you want.
Tell other people to do these things. SPREAD THE WORD! That’s the only way this thing keeps going. We’ve kept Idol going for 19 years with just word of mouth, friends telling friends about it! It’s your turn to be the one to tell people about it! They don’t need to participate to read, comment or vote!

All of this said, there will be (spins wheel) 1 contestant leaving us this week! (the options were 1-3)

The contestant with the fewest votes will be sent to the Dungeon of Chaos to rot for the rest of eternity. (or at least until the wheel gives them another shot)

The poll closes Wednesday June 25th at 9pm ET.

Good luck to everyone!
Note: Fausts_dreams link should be https://fausts-dream.dreamwidth.org/6729.html - my apologies. Obviously this week he is safe as a result of my mistake.

How is everyone doing with the first prompt?  I haven't heard too much crying, but that could just be because I've long since learned to tune out your suffering!  ;)

What did you end up doing this weekend?

Anything fun?

I started (and finished) season 3 of The Traitors US.  With Rob Cesternino (Survivor) and Kristen Kish (Top Chef) being in Scotland filming season 4 right now, I thought it was a good time to catch up!

I also finished the new season of Top Chef. Which may have had me crying a bit at the finale.  Maybe.  Or maybe you were the one who was crying.  Yes, that seems more likely!   ;)

Speaking of crying - the first prompt is up:  therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1184469.html

The Sign Up Sheet is still open as well: therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1182845.html

I'm going to warn you ahead of time that the poll for Week 1 is going to not come out right away.  Not only does the first poll usually take more time to set up, I also have an unexpected funeral to attend that day.  One of my coworkers from my previous job passed away. I'm just glad that I received multiple messages from people who wanted to make sure that I knew. That was very kind of them to reach out.

and yes, "The Wheelhouse" is the "special event" version of the Green Room, for those more use to that name. A lot of special events have their own specific gathering place names, and I just liked this one.

I have a master list of unused prompts. Some didn't end up being used in previous seasons. Some are new. All are now on a wheel of chaos.

I will not know what the week's prompt is until a couple minutes before you do!!

For anyone new here - or who hasn't been around for awhile, just a couple reminders:

Use the prompt as a jumping off point for your own creativity. The only limits are those you place on yourself and your work!

ONLY POST YOUR LINK to this thread. Any non-link comments posted here will be deleted. It makes it more difficult to keep track of entries for the week if everyone comments here. Comment to people on their entries or in one of the other spaces provided. This is solely for links. Not reactions.

With all of that now being said - and I reminder that if someone HASN'T signed up, they still have another week to do so, therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1182845.html

[personal profile] clauderainsrm
During each week, I will spin the wheel and reveal the twist.  Sometimes it will be before the prompt is announced, sometimes before the voting.

As I said before, I was feeling merciful as we got closer to starting, so I added another wheel. We're calling it the first wheel.  2/3 of the spots on it read "Twist" and the other 1/3 are "No Twist".  Obviously "No Twist" means that the second wheel will not be spun that week and you will get a break from the normal level of chaos.  You will get to breathe with only the normal amount of Idol chaos, more or less...

That first wheel it did spin and it came up that there WOULD be a twist on Week 1.

I was very happy that we were starting off this event right.

So I spun the second wheel, the one with the master list of twists on it, hoping for something delightful.  After all, some of the list are quite twisted and some are quite twisted in other ways.  :)  This one turned out to be one of the latter.

It's probably the first "first week" twist that there could be, because it might as well be a "No Twist":

Anyone who was previously eliminated from the competition is automatically back in the game.

Being that no one has been eliminated yet, it means nothing. But since twists are NOT removed from the wheel once selected, it does reveal what one of those spots is, and you now know that it is out there, and the possibility exists.

So, I guess that's a good thing for you...

Week 1's prompt will be posted soon.

I caused this result. It was a comedy of errors that all ended with us in this situation.

[personal profile] vik_thor  submitted his entry after the poll went up. He was charged with a bye because it wasn't there when I hit "post"... within a minute of me doing that though I got the notification that his entry was up.

So I went to add it at the bottom of the post. He still had a bye, because it wasn't in before I posted the poll.  But I wanted people to have the chance to read it. The problem came because I accidentally overwrote the rest of the poll when I posted that link and didn't notice until people started pointing it out.

At that point, I assembled the NEW poll, and since he was in time for that, I added his entry.

And he ended up with the lowest amount of votes. Did people not vote for him because he was late? I know there are people who do that. Were there other factors? I honestly don't know.

What I DO know is that if that original poll had stayed up, without me trying to do something nice, he wouldn't be going home...

So he isn't going to be going home and will be charged with a bye instead. (as the original poll stated)

I don't want someone to be eliminated for me causing a technical difficulty.  Nor would it be fair to skip over him (like he was a bye) and eliminate the next person. No one is going home this week. Congratulations! You made it to Week 2.

There is an important lesson for me here - never try to be nice.  ;)

Today is the day!  Which is true with every day. Regardless of the specific day, it's ALWAYS "The DAY!"

But in this case, it's a special day to us specifically. The first poll is closing tonight and it's pretty close in who might be voted out.   therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1142509.html

So if you haven't voted yet,  now is the time to make a difference!

If those of you who HAVE been reading, and voting.... what are some of your personal favorites from this week's entries that you don't think are getting enough attention?

For those who haven't been reading - what are some of the hurdles you've encountered this week that put you behind on keeping up?

clauderainsrm: (Default)
[personal profile] clauderainsrm
The first poll is up, and stakes couldn't be higher!   therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1142509.html

Which isn't even an exaggeration, it's an outright lie. Everyone could be dangled over a pit of starving crocodiles, armed with laser guided missiles, and the rope is fraying. Whoever stays up the longest will win the ability to live out the rest of their life!

THAT would be much higher stakes than being eliminated. Which would be absolutely silly to be happening in a Week 1 poll. That is, at very least, Week 8 or 9 at the earliest.   ;)

How was your weekend? Did you do anything interesting?

***

I watched two movies, one because Amazon sent me a Prime video credit and the other not so much:  Late Night With the Devil and I Saw the TV Glow.  Both of them definitely had that "relatively calm for most of the movie and by the end things get crazy"

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

I’ll freely admit that I had no idea what to expect with this mini season. There are probably more mysteries from this starting point than I’ve ever had. Will people show up? That was answered, yes there are people here! Off to a good start!

Would I remember how to do this? It turns out that it’s like riding a bike. Note: I’ve never been particularly good at riding a bike. So I need to make sure to have a helmet and pads on because I am 100% going to crash this thing at some point!

Ultimately we haven’t been on hiatus that long, and given how many seasons/mini seasons/special events occurred without much of a break at all, I think we all needed that period to rest and reset. I am hoping that the time away will mean when people start seeing what is happening here, that they will get curious enough to wander into the room.

For those who are experiencing this all for the first time - I can’t even begin to express my appreciation for you. I know it seems vague and more than a little random at times. But if you let yourself go with the experience, I think you are going to enjoy it!

That expression my appreciation for you of course does not extend to the veterans, because you would think I was replaced by a flawed clone of some kind. So… *kicks you* - you know what that means. ;)

Now to the admin parts of the post. We had two people decide that they didn’t have the time to participate. Which is why their names are not in the poll: [personal profile] jasmasson  and [personal profile] ofearthandstars

I was looking forward to reading what you were going to be bringing to the table this mini season. But I hope we will still see you around in the Green Room!

There were a lot of Byes this week. I’m HOPING that it’s because being back on a routine can be rough and this first deadline just slid by them before they noticed it. Especially for US participants this was a weird middle of the week is a holiday when time and days of the week stop making sense. ;)

So I’m hoping we will see everyone next week. That is why we have 2 byes though, so that missing a week isn’t the end. But those are only until the Top 20, so hopefully people will be spacing them out accordingly. Either that or the Top 20 could arrive faster than anyone expected!!!

For the rest of you - thank you for your entries this week. I’ve really enjoyed reading them and hearing so many different voices again. If that’s where we are at the starting point, I think we are in for an incredible mini season.

Now it is time for our first poll, so I’ll go over the general instructions. Read the entries. There are links provided. Comment on them. Let people know what you thought! Everyone loves feedback!!

Then, vote for your favorites! Click that little box next to their name and hit “submit” when you are done. You can vote for as many entries as you want to support. That support translates to seeing more entries from them next week!!! Because whoever has the fewest votes will be the 1st person eliminated.
I’lll be honest, we’ve had some amazing people voted out in the first couple of weeks of some seasons. Sometimes it’s just what is connecting with any specific crowd and being the first week, we just don’t know what that is going to look like! There is no shame in going out first. Someone has to be the one, it’s just how things work out. I say all of this because usually, when I’ve read the entries, there are usually a couple where I say to myself “OK, those are probably the early boots”... this time I couldn’t do that. Which means I’m as interested in seeing how this plays out as anyone else!

Which brings me to two vital pieces of advice: (1) Yes, you can vote for yourself. If this is about finding support for yourself, you should absolutely be the first person in line to believe in your work. And (2) Tell people about this poll and what is happening here. Please don’t do the “Vote for me!!!” but rather encourage them to (see above) Read, Comment and Vote for their favorites. They may find other writers here that they connect with as well. That is how communities get built, or in this case, rebuilt.
Now is the time everyone has been waiting for, when I tell you the deadline and shut up. :)

This is about YOUR voices (see below in the links) after all!

The poll will close Tuesday July 9th at 9pm ET.  The contestant with the fewest votes will be eliminated.

Good luck to everyone!!

I'm aware of the issue and I will work on it. It was fine when I originally posted it but I think adding that entry at the end overrode everything under it. Right now I'm making dinner but as soon as I'm done I'll be back to working on this problem. I knew it was going too smoothly. :D

Anything interesting happening this weekend?
clauderainsrm: (Default)
[personal profile] clauderainsrm
I've been spending the last couple of days at the Lightning Prospect Training Camp, not as a prospect to join the team (despite the obvious interest they have in bringing me on. Old out of shape guys who can't ice skate are in high demand for professional hockey teams) but to watch with Celena.  I haven't heard yet if we are going today (I know she is, but haven't heard if I'm invited yet! *crosses fingers*)

How was your 4th? Did you blow anything up and annoy your neighbors for the entire evening? Are you planning on doing that for the rest of the week, blowing things up into the wee hours of the morning?

Or are you NOT my new neighbors?

It's such a great way to make an impression when you've only lived somewhere just over a month to go on a fireworks spree. It makes people go "They look like fun, we should definitely talk and get to know each other!"

***
Have you submitted your entry yet? If not, hopefully you have been working on it!
If you've been reading the ones already out there - wow. I'm REALLY looking forward to what is coming this mini season. The bar was definitely raised early this time. therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1140427.html

 Happy 21st birthday to Celena!!!

(For those who don't know this information, that is my awesome stepdaughter.  :) )
So I'll probably be out of the house most of the day. If you need me though, email!

***
While writing the "heads up" post explaining to people what to expect from the voting process, it occurred to me that I never did explain what the GREEN ROOM is about.  For those who have never heard the term:

"In show business, the green room is the space in a theatre or similar venue that functions as a waiting room and lounge for performers before, during, and after a performance or show when they are not engaged on stage."

(from Wikipedia)

This is your space to relax, chat with each other. If you want to use it to bounce off ideas, feel free!  (We used to have a separate Work Room but let's just start with one room and go from there to see if it's needed)

***
The new prompt has been posted and people have already started submitting entries: therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1140427.html

I'll admit that I've forgotten how satisfying that was to have a thought in MY head that I put out into the world and then start seeing what other people create with it.  I didn't remember how much I'd missed it until the first couple people had posted and I started reading....

***
I've been asked by a couple people "can I sneak in?" after the sign up deadline - and I said "Yes"... because (and those who know me are aware of this) I'm going to side with having more people having the chance to play than being super strict about that aspect.  That said, the last sign ups I will be accepting before it's 100% closed is the deadline for the first prompt. So if someone sees your entry and goes "WOW! I didn't know Idol had started up!" or "What is that? Can I do it too?" let them know that yes, they can.   therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1138078.html
But they still need to get that first entry in by the deadline!

I do *try* to be understanding, especially since I know that the word about Idol being back has been slowly trickling out.

***

I just saw this in my email. Goodreads put out a list of "

Which books are on your list to read and/or have you already read? www.goodreads.com/blog/show/2770

For me it's
Dune by Frank Herbert (read when I was a teenager)
Chain Gang All Stars  by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah  (checked out from the library and currently sitting on my side table)
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (read last year)
James by Percival Everett (currently reading)

I have a couple files for my prompt ideas. They are often just random words or phrases that I come across during my day that strike me as interesting or appealing in some way.

So when I decided that Idol Mini was happening I started looking through what I had in the archives as well as started trying to get my head back in practice.

One of those ideas in the archive was in a file all by itself on my phone. Not with the rest of the prompts (that sometimes happens). It was a phrase with a name. I really liked the phrase quite a bit and kept coming back to it.  So I decided "that's the first prompt!"

It wasn't until this afternoon that I had the thought "I should Google that" and realized it's actually the same of a short story anthology and that name attached was the name of the author. So I added it to my "For Later" shelf in the library app.

But I still like it. So I'm still using it.

I've warned you, sometimes it's a single word. Sometimes it's a phrase or a lyric.

This time it's (apparently) a book title:

Someone who will love you in all your damaged glory

The deadline to link your entry back to this thread is Saturday, July 6th at 6pm ET.

(just a reminder, the only thing that should be posted here are links/byes. Everything else should be posted in the Green Room posts)

Have fun!

Happy Friday (and from what I was just reminded of in the comments, Happy Belated Birthday to everyone celebrating a belated birthday! Or early birthday if it's coming up.. Or Happy Birthday if today happens to be the day. Hmmm... now that I think of it, your birthdays are all now TODAY! Your parents were wrong about the date when they told you it. Your birth certificate was faked to help them cover up that lie. Today is your ACTUAL birthday.  So I hope you have a good one.)

Monday is the deadline to get your entries in.  Not a new, retroactively altered Monday. The actual Monday that is coming up in a few days. So make sure you are writing yours - and reading/commenting on what is already out there!  therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1103032.html

I have the day off, so I'm just going to be relaxing and not thinking about work.  What are YOUR weekend plans?

Today has already been a rough day at work. It's one of those times when you just ram your head into a brick wall over and over again... which is why I'm taking a break to come over to Idol.. oh man, it MUST be really bad. ;)

How is your Friday-Eve going?

Normally, we'd be getting ready to go to FEST this weekend. (The 3-Day punk festival in Gainesville, FL) They, obviously, cancelled it last year and we've been really looking forward to the return.

But a LOT of bands ended up cancelling and in the end, my wife and I decided that going to one show every once in awhile was quite different than a series of shows over a 3 day period in close quarters with a bunch of screaming people forming mosh pits might not be the best idea. Which really stinks because again, I was hoping to do that again... hopefully 2022 the situation will look better.  Looking at the recent COVID stats in the US, there has been a significant decline in the number of cases overall, but that hospital/ICU level hasn't really budged as much. So there aren't as many people getting sick, but there about the same amount who have ended up with a serious case of it.

if this tracks like last year did - there will probably be another spike in a couple months. But there is a vaccine now, so hopefully that will keep that from happening at those levels. I guess we will find out...  anyway, so yeah, I'm bummed that I'm not going.  But that did mean that I could start Idol Minor+ THIS week instead of next... so I guess you are benefitting from that decision!  :)

The prompt is up and people have started to submit their entries. So make sure to get YOURS in before Monday, and check out what they are putting out there into the world!  https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1103032.html   Read and comment. There is no vote. So once the deadline passes we will be going straight into the next prompt.  So please take the time to check other people's work out and let them know what you're enjoying!

Not going to the FEST also means that I'm giving some of the time I took off back... and going into work.  At least tomorrow. I haven't committed to going in Friday, or Monday yet.  Who knows what I might get up to... what wild and crazy adventures that I might... Oh... yeah...  *sigh* yeah, I know... I probably will end up working.  ;)
