Before I get to anything else - I just want to say "THANK YOU". I'm pretty sure this is the first time that I've ever had the votes counted so quickly, because instead of the contestant only votes coming in during the final hour, you spaced them out! That's very much appreciated.

You also followed *most* of my requests about how to submit them to make the process easier - which, for a group of writers is more than I expected. ;)

With that out of the way, now comes the part that everyone hates - the eliminations.

Given that it was a staggered closing time, that is the order that the eliminations happened in, for those wanting to figure that kind of thing out.

First we have the immunity, given out by those participating in the Home Game/Killing Floor. It was really close, with 16 people receiving votes to keep them safe. Ultimately though, it was decided by *2 votes*. This week immunity was awarded to [livejournal.com profile] dmousey.

Congratulations.

I would say that it didn't end up being needed, and that would be true, but it *did* impact who else went home. Because we are losing 6 from the Contestant Only vote, because if we went any higher, then the immunity *would have* been played, and we would be losing 11. (and I'd already set the maximum at 10)

There were two sacrifices: [livejournal.com profile] icaruslived and [livejournal.com profile] n3m3sis43 that counted toward this total, plus 4 others:

[livejournal.com profile] eeyore_grrl
[livejournal.com profile] ellison
[livejournal.com profile] sorchawench
[livejournal.com profile] strryeyedgrrl

Which in turn, meant that they were already gone by the time the poll itself closed - and the next three lowest were eliminated (one of them by a single vote!)

[livejournal.com profile] cheshire23
[livejournal.com profile] eternal_ot
[livejournal.com profile] medleymisty

Definitely some favorites in this group - as well as some surprises (at the "midway point" it looked like it was going to be a different list for the contestant only voting!)

Thank you to all of you for coming out this season, it's been a delight to have you.

I hope that we will continue to see you in the Home Game, as well as hanging out in the Green Room to cheer on your favorites, or just to chat! :)

Last night, I received one of those emails you always like to picture getting - but never think you will.

It was from Livejournal, telling me how great they think LJ Idol is, and what they are willing to do to help it to grow, and how much they want us to stick around.

I would have felt better if I didn't then ask around to other community moderators that I know and find out that they sent out the same email to a lot of other people. (Not sure if it was everyone, the Top 50/100/500 of communities)

It was like coming into your office to find it decorated and there's a cake - only to realize halfway through thanking people that it's for the *group birthday* of everyone born that month, it's still a really nice thing, and you appreciate it - but for that split second, you thought it was just for you. ;)

It's nice to know thought that Livejournal is planning on getting more proactive and working with their communities. Personally, I wouldn't be disappointed if they wanted to spend a little less time on their ONTD brand and threw some love at people actually *creating original content* on their site. But I'm a little biased. :)

***

If YOU want to throw a little love at people creating original content on Livejournal - now is the perfect time to do so, in the poll! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/809247.html There is also a Contestant Only vote this week, and a few people who still need to get me their votes. So make sure that your voice is heard!
It's interesting to see the differences between the public voting and the contestant only. There is the potential for some heart-breakers... then again, at this point, isn't *every* option going to break some people's hearts?

There is also the Home Game/Killing Floor: Which, if you have participated in that, with either TWO pieces of constructive criticism, OR submitting one piece to the KF and giving someone else constructive criticism - you are eligible to vote for who will receive immunity this week! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/808357.html And yes, this is open to everyone and even more importantly - Immunity is always important, with a week like this though, with how close some of the votes are, it could be the difference between who stays in, and who will be leaving us this week.

***
KF eligibility and the getting me your votes cuts off at 7pm EST tonight.
The Contestant Only vote cuts off at 8pm EST tonight.
The public poll is closing at 9pm EST tonight.

Yes, tonight is going to be interesting!

December is starting off with a BANG!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The poll closes tomorrow night: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/809247.html and given that people are going to be leaving from both the public poll *and* the contestant only one - we are looking at some potentially huge shifts in this game when the results are announced.

At least if what I am seeing at the moment can be believed.

(Granted, that probably depends on what you personally think would be a "huge shift"!)

Regardless of the outcome though, it's going to be a shot to the gut to lose so many people at this stage of the competition.

Hopefully, you have gotten your votes in.

You can have one additional way of impacting the results by participating in the Home Game/Killing Floor: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/808357.html

Since this is "Cyber Monday" - you should check out the Idol Store! http://astore.amazon.com/li0cd-20 (or just click there before going to Amazon to buy whatever you were going to buy anyway!)

***

How was your extended weekend? Did anyone actually finish their Christmas shopping or are you just getting started?

It's weird, because it wasn't that long ago when my Christmas shopping consisted of what to get my cats and just getting through the holidays. I always loved Christmas in general, but it was still a sad and lonely time that reminded me of what I didn't have.

If there is anyone else in that place right now - and I'm sure there are - reach out to your Idol family! They helped me through some rough patches. I'm sure they will help you as well.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
In the spirit of "what people want to talk about": Two truths and a lie.

- This week we have a regular poll *and* a contestant only poll going on at the same time: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/809247.html

- There is also a Home Game/Killing Floor happening, where your participation means you get a say in who receives immunity (which could be HUGE this week) http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/808357.html

- You will make it out of December unscathed

***

So what are two things and a lie about what you are doing this weekend?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
What was your Favorite thing the Great Turkey brought you yesterday?

(What do you mean "What's the Great Turkey?" He comes into your house on Thanksgiving Eve and leaves presents and fully cooked feasts for all the *good people of the world*. Well, maybe *that's* why you don't get visited....)

***

What's your Favorite thing in this week's poll: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/809247.html ?

Heck, what's your Favorite thing in our Amazon store: http://astore.amazon.com/li0cd-20 ?

What are some of your Favorite books (that you think we should add to the "Other Books You Might Enjoy" section, for others to check out)?

Or you could always just type in your Favorite number into that Paypal link from yesterday. :P http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/809887.html

***
How likely to do you think "Favorites" is going to be something that shows up sometime soon? ;)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
You know what sucks the most about (insert the name of an Idol contestant here)?

I have no idea. I'm just trying to get you started on something. :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Give me your food, and assistance and I will eventually slaughter you! I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to celebrating the holidays! :)

You, on the other hand, have a different set of traditions - you come here, to your Idol family to celebrate. Which makes you the best of the best! Unlike those people with "lives" and "families who care about them", you cling tightly to the random grouping of folks on the internet! Good for you! I'm glad to see some people have PRIORITIES!

Speaking of "priorities" - the poll is currently up. It's both a public poll as well as a Contestant Only email vote. So make sure to get your votes in - http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/809247.html It's a great way of saying "Thanks" to the writers who have brought you so much joy over the course of the season.

Also - the Home Game/Killing Floor is happening: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/808357.html So you still have time to get involved with that.

***
Yesterday I talked about the emails that I had gotten over the last 24 hours. Today I'm going to mention the questions from a couple other emails from a few weeks back. I held off on them until now because of the whole "Giving Thanks" thing, combined with Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

Taking the comments, throwing together a few different emails and trying to make them more general - the theme was "How to Give to Idol".

Now, before I get into this I need to give the usual disclaimer of "Positive and active participation in Idol is giving back to it." But there are always people who want to go beyond that - and I'm certainly not going to stop them. ;)

There are various things you can do. We have an AMAZON STORE: http://astore.amazon.com/li0cd-20 I've updated some of the newest Idol-related releases. (I'm sure there are more that I need to add though. Just send me a reminder!) Even if there isn't anything from the store that you want, if you click through that link to go to Amazon, we still get a little something. Which is great, since you literally just have to click a few more buttons before making the purchase you were going to make anyway - and end up helping out!

If you are someone who likes the idea of making a monthly donation to the cause - that's what Patreon is there for - http://www.patreon.com/user?u=70027 It's the only exception to the rule of "Giving Back DOESN'T help you in Idol". That's because there are incentives. The biggest one is having one of your topics used!

One question that was asked was "Is there a way to make a ONE TIME donation"? Absolutely. That would be Paypal.

(There are some other options as well - I can provide those upon request. :D)

As for the usual question of "where does the money go?" The old answer was "to the wedding fund". The new answer is "to get out of debt to my ex-landlords, and others - so that I can start putting money back into the wedding fund". :)

***

Anyway - enough of that - WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?

Or, taking a page from what some of you were talking about yesterday - make up something that you are thankful for! :)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It was a dark and stormy night...

No, really, it was.

Really stormy.

It didn't make matters any better that there ended up being a water pipe that burst a couple streets over from where we were heading.

Traffic is bad on an average day when you are leaving the city and coming into suburbia. But when you add "bad weather" into the mix, it's just going to get worse. Throw in "traveling on bus" - and then once you get home, needing to run back out into it - yeah, it becomes less of a "am I going to be late" and more of a "HOW late am I going to be?"

Especially when you haven't factored in actually eating dinner.

But that's what you sign up for - sometimes you just have to *not* eat in order to get everything done that needs to get done.

When those "perfect storm" situations hit, you try to be more understanding about other people who may be going through something of their own on their end of the internet.

Which is why I send out my patented "You coming?" emails to people who haven't made it in yet. To find out what is going on - and if they just forgot to link their entry. When I'm running ahead of schedule, I tend to look for those myself - and usually end up finding a few on even the best of weeks. (rarely the same person)

I understand - things can happen.

Which is a long way around getting to the question that I have multiple copies of in my inbox last night/this morning. What it boils down to is "Do you enforce the deadlines/why have rules if you won't enforce them?"

There are definitely people who have come in on the wrong side of being late for a poll and have been eliminated as a result.

Deadlines are set. But, since Season 1, the policy has always been "If you get it in before I post the poll - I'll allow it." That's always the been the rule for what gets in the poll and what doesn't.

I can think of someone off the top of my head (a personal favorite of mine that season actually) who ended up submitting their entry less than a minute after a posted the poll. *That* was heartbreaking, but it's one of the dangers involved with posting at last minute. You never know when I am going to be have things ready to go! Things like last night, or where LJ just goes wonky/something wrong with the coding are pretty rare. The closer you get to that edge, the more likely it is to end up costing you.

Some people don't like that. They say it shows too much mercy.

Some people don't like when I have a twist that they think is too cruel.

To me - the mercy and the cruelty ends up evening out. :)

I can let people into the polls. Or come into the game late through special events and powers. Ultimately though YOU will decide if they are going to stay.

That's your power as voters. If you want to use "were they on time?" as a criteria - that's your criteria.
"Have they been here the entire time?" Again. Your criteria.
"Can I beat them?" (I've seen that one used before) That's on you.

The main one should always be "What did I think of the entry?" But those are certainly valid tie-breakers if everything else is equal.

This week has a Contestant Only vote component to it: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/809247.html which is a chance for the contestants to have their say. I hope that you will use it - and if being late to the party is something that bugs you - don't vote for them. If it's not, and they are putting out something you enjoy, do.

This is one small area where it really is "your call", where your will is going to be enforced! Use it wisely.

A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

People like to “tell me the truth” about things.

One of those truths was something that I ended up hearing more times than I can fully remember - but the most recent one was a little over a week ago.

“We all know Allison is going to win this again” and “Everyone else is just playing for Second Place”

When I lifted the ban on previous winners participating, I knew that anything could happen. Most of them ended up byeing out. But one stayed.

Until now.

Because not every season is the same, and Real Life can happen.

So wipe those slate boards clean Ladies and Gentlemen. Because it’s anyone’s game.

Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] whipchick for coming back out this season. I hope you managed to haveb some fun, and I know you certainly wrote some great stuff.

Hope to see you in the Home Game! (and at the Thai Temple when you are in town! ;) )

As for the rest of you, now that you have pulled your jaws up off the floor - our topic was “Gauntlet” and I wasn’t joking.

There is a regular poll. We will be losing the bottom three from there.

But there is ALSO a CONTESTANT ONLY vote. If you are a current contestant. (Hint: If your name is in the poll, you are) You will send me a list of your 15 FAVORITES from this week to clauderainsrm@gmail.com

We will be losing at least 5 but no more than 10 from there.

That’s right. It’s time to get brutal. :D

The deadline to get your contestant only votes to me is Tuesday, Dec 2nd at 8pm EST

The public poll will close at 9pm EST the same night.

Good luck to everyone.

We also have some stuff happening here that I need to let you know about.

The deadline is TONIGHT: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/807797.html
So make sure to get your entries in!

There is a Work Room for your last minute panic attacks: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/808175.html

For those already finished, or those who are not (or no longer) contestants - there is the Home Game/Killing Floor - a place for entries *not* for the competition to be posted and constructive criticism given! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/808357.html

So, what ELSE is going on?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It's Thanksgiving week - that is, the *real* Thanksgiving, not whatever one the "Canadians" and "other foreigners" might be celebrating.

Which may seem strange that an one day event is celebrated all week. But then again, "Christmas season" has been being celebrated since before the Halloween decorations were down. So it's all relative.

According to the memes, Thanksgiving is a time to come together and give thanks for what you have. It is also a time to reflect on the genocide committed against the Native People. And yet, if you try to combine them, to ask what genocide folks are the most thankful for - that's when people get "upset" and "yell" while "throwing things at you".

Go figure. Some people just can't appreciate being efficient. ;)

***

What people CAN appreciate though, is that we have a topic that is due tomorrow! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/807797.html

There *are no more byes*, so hopefully everyone will be able to make it to the mat in time!

If you still need a little help, there is the Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/808175.html

and of course, if you are no longer a current contestant - or you want to read and give some constructive criticism, there is the Home Game/Killing Floor: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/808357.html

Those are things that are *both* genocide-related AND something people are thankful for having! See, it can be done!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Today is just one of those "blah" days for me.

Not sure if it's the weather (it's been cold, by our standards, but today is actually warmer than it has been) or just things being overcast... the "winter blahs" maybe. Maybe just having one more former co-worker's funeral last night sent things over the mental edge...

Or just plain having an "off" day.

So give me some good news. Or at least something to help snap me out of this funk.

Welcome to the Home Game/Killing Floor.

This is the thread to post your entries if you are not a current contestant. That's the "Home Game" element.

The Killing Floor is where other people come in and often constructive criticism on your piece, to give you the feedback to help make it even better.

Hopefully, combining them will give folks more incentive to take part.

However, if that's not enough - there is one more twist. Anyone posting two (or more) pieces of constructive criticism in this thread (or one entry and a piece of constructive criticism for someone else) is eligible to CAST A VOTE TO DETERMINE WHO RECEIVES IMMUNITY IN THIS WEEK'S POLL.

Which, as you know, can be huge.

The topic this week is "Gauntlet". Although really Home Game entries can be anything you want folks to look at! :)

The deadline to be eligible to cast a vote is one hour before the poll closes. Just send me an email with your Top 4 choices.

In the meantime - get to writing, and commenting!

This is an intense week, with a lot of information to cover. So, let’s start off with the good stuff:

Due to the sacrifices of [livejournal.com profile] drjeff and [livejournal.com profile] similiesslip, things worked a little bit differently for the “Disappear” Tribe. They had two things going on, that no one else did: (1) The tribe member with the most votes would receive a bye (that had to be given away) and they sent in ballots for immunity to give someone from another tribe.

Both of these powers are good between now and the Top 25.

The person who wins a bye that must be given away, as voted on by the General Voting Public is [livejournal.com profile] halfshellvenus

As for the immunity, I’ve got to say, this was really close. One vote separated the person who is receiving this from the person in second, and only 2 votes from the pack in third. It may have been a single vote, but it was the one that awarded this immunity to [livejournal.com profile] porn_this_way!

Congratulations to you both.

As for the other tribes, the makeup of the groups, based on the topics people selected, seemed to throw things off. Which, from a game perspective is good. But that doesn’t mean that the results can’t still be tragic.

I’m definitely losing several personal favorites this week, including someone who topped my personal list not too long ago!

Of the powers that are still out there (until the Top 30), there was a possibility of meeting the “conditions of use” of two of them. Three, if you count a previous instruction that would have sent everything into a tail spin had it not been recanted. However, ultimately, it came down to one of the conditions being met, and unfortunately, there was only one power to use, so it went in order of their selections...

Which is a long-winded way of saying that [livejournal.com profile] n3m3sis42 used her immunity to save [livejournal.com profile] jem0000000 from Tribe Appropriation.

Unfortunately, that means the person with the second fewest votes is eliminated.

Which means those leaving us this week are a talented group of contestants, and definitely an All-Star class of individuals:

Goodbye to:
[livejournal.com profile] alephz
[livejournal.com profile] copyright1983
[livejournal.com profile] karmasoup

The one “good” piece of news in this - if there is one, is that not only did these people do an incredible job this season, making it to this point - they have just become the first members of THE JURY, who will be granting immunity every week from now until they run out of people to give it to! (No one can have it, from the jury, more than once)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
We asked people “What are you talking about today. Of the 100 people surveyed, what did they say?

Survey Says – RIP Richard Dawson!

*ding* That’s Number 2.

What was the number 1 answer?
*flip* The poll: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/573331.html

I’m not surprised! After all. That is life or death, rather than just death!

It’s more Hogan’s Heroes, with people trapped in a prison camp, not escaping but rather running operations from there. Hmmm… Idol *is* a lot like Hogan’s Heroes! ;)

I hope your weekend was good, and not like mine (where I spent a good bit of it scraping off a popcorn ceiling. Seriously, whoever invented that had been already be dead. Otherwise, I want to track them down and correct that error… ;) )
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I think it should be “The Troubles, with Tribbles” retelling the story of the conflicts in, and regarding, Northern Ireland with self-multiplying furball aliens. I think it would be a successful Off-Off-Broadway production, with the right script. So get on it.

Right now.

I’ll wait.

Did you remember that it’s a musical?

No?

Then go write the songs too! What am I paying you people for? Wait. I’m not paying you. You’re not even paying ME!

Something is definitely wrong here.

I definitely expect a piece of the profits from TTWT.

Until then though, you can refresh a poll: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/573331.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

It’s been a strange week. So, of course, that was going to continue to the poll itself.
This week features two announced sacrifices. Which, sort of takes the fun out of it! Why would you tell people they would be safe? Especially since so many people guessed that the tribes would be broken up along topic lines!

Which, they totally were.

Fortunately, both sacrifices are coming from the same tribe. The Disappear group. So it really only saves one person!

My instinct would be to go for the throat of the biggest group. But since they are already losing two members, I decided not to do that.

Instead, since they will not be feeling the pressure of “will I be leaving this week?”, I’m throwing out an additional duty on them. Each member of that tribe, needs to send me (clauderainsrm@gmail.com) their top two entries, from someone NOT in their group by Monday,June 4th at 8pm EDT. The person who receives the most votes, will receive an immunity good for until the Top 25!

In addition, the person with the most votes in that tribe, will receive a bye that must be given away, also good to the Top 25. Sure, it doesn’t directly benefit them, but they can be someone else’s hero! Which never hurts!

Obviously, the two sacrifcing are not eligible to win the bye.

For the other tribes, they will be losing the person who wrote the entry with the fewest votes. Which means, ultimately, we will be losing five contestants this week.

In the past, contestants usually managed to split themselves up fairly evenly. This time, that wasn’t the case. Which should certainly make for some interesting results!

So make sure you get out there and read everything, and comment to them, and support your favorites!

The polls close Monday, June 4th at 9pm EDT.

Good luck to everyone!

I’m sure you have something to say (other than “It’s better to burn out, than fade away”) about it. Mostly because you people have something to say about pretty much everything!

I take a couple days off from LJ and suddenly there is a ranking system!
What does it mean? I don’t know. Is 360 place in community rankings good or bad? I have no idea.
237 Social capital? Do we want more or less? I’m not sure.

How do you “improve”? Beat me. But I want to. So, figure out how to get us higher, or lower – whichever is better, on those charts!!
That is your mission!

Why? Because now it’s out there and we need to win! :P

I’m not even sure what “winning” entails, just that social ranking implies that we need to do it!!! ;)

The new topics went up last night http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/571850.html

Causing a Work Room to generate: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/572119.html

And a Home Game thread. (well, I haven’t posted it yet, but I will in a couple of minutes). You didn’t get to 10 last time, but it was close enough for me to give it another try… especially with 4 different topics to choose from, I have every faith that the thread will be used this week.)

So, between that and figuring out how to improve Idol’s social standing, I guess you have your hands full today!! :D
