There were 2 strikes to be handed out this week, and it certainly came close to being a lot more than that.

But in the end, only 2 were at the bottom.

Which means it's strike 2 for [personal profile] gunwithoutmusic
and unfortunately, strike 3 for [personal profile] hwango .

Which means we need to say goodbye to hwango

It also means it's time for me to reveal that is who ran the table in the contestant-only vote back in Week 19.  It wasn't even close.  But now he is gone from the competition (but I know he will still be around).   :(

***
6 people are left in the competition. If my numbers are correct - There are 3 people with 2 strikes. 1 with 1 strike and 2 who have not yet had a strike against them.  The strikes stop having a direct impact on the Top 5.  (but will still be used to break a tie)

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

There’s a couple things that I need to say before we get started:

[personal profile] d0gs has dropped from the competition. It’s definitely a huge blow and I hope that everything will be in a better place soon.

I’ve written out various versions of the second part a few times. Some were longer and more involved than others. But they all boiled down to the same thing - be decent to each other. We are a community. Yes. It’s a competition. And never forget that part of it. But ultimately everyone is here to share their writing and get something out of the process. Once you forget that, you’ve already lost.

One entry is going to do better than another entry. It happens. In the end, only one person is going to win. It may not be the person you are rooting for right now. If it’s not, maybe you should go back and reread their stuff. Because clearly you are missing something! Or, heck, maybe other people just have different taste than you do. That happens too. It’s OK.

I’ve noticed over the years that the closer we get to the end, the more the tension starts to ramp up and people aren’t at their best when they are under tension. Take a breath. Now take another. Are you proud of the work you’ve been doing? Good. You should be. Write it. Share it. Go to someone else’s work and give them constructive feedback. Or just let them know that they “rock” - that works too.

Share the work you love - as well as your own.

That’s how this community gets to grow, and continue doing what we do here.

This post is sponsored by “Pulp Fiction”, which taught us all that it’s important to be like Fonzie. “Be cool”

Go be Fonzie with each other.

With that drop, that means it’s only the lowest 2 votes that will receive strikes. It also gets us one person closer to the Top 5.

The poll closes Tuesday November 8th at 9pm ET. Good luck to everyone!

It's the start of a new week here at Idol, and in the outside world as well.

There were results posted - therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1132263.html (note: I did change the strike count after receiving a couple corrections. I won't eliminate someone because I missed it. But I will correct a statement, for those wondering what the difference is, that's a huge one to me.)

The new prompt was also posted therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1132302.html

***

What do YOU have planned for this week?  (In your life, or for the prompt. I was thinking about Life in general, but hey, interpret it the way you want!)

***

In case you missed it, I did finally announce when the 3 Strikes format would end - at the Top 5. I know that's going to be a relief for everyone wondering "how much longer is this mini season going to last anyway?"  :D

The strikes however WILL come into play to determine any ties. That's their lasting legacy, and threat that will continue to loom over the remainder of the competition.  Obviously, if two people with the same number of votes AND strikes end up tied, we will then go to the traditional write-off tie-breaker format.  (For long time Idol watchers, it's a throwback to the old "stars" system, which were our very first tie-breakers. Except this time they were given due to performance in the polls)

What prompt should I post... hmmm... not sure...

maybe I should go with... nah, not that one.

I know. I just got up. Yep. That one is perfect for the day.

Good Morning, or whatever time it is when you read this.

Last night, we had the results of our FINALE!! Only to find out, due to yet another tie in this mini season of ties, it was just the first stage in the finale. https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1066088.html

***

I also confirmed via email with those handling Kate's memorial that not only is it OK to have the Kathrynrose Spirit of Idol award - but that next season there WILL be a prize for the recipient, that they will be donating.

It makes me wish we had been in a place to set something up for Siggy after Luna died. Which is kind of the opposite of what I'm talking about... but that's how my brain is working right now.

Anyway, this has been a rough mini season emotionally. I'm going to celebrate the winner and get started on the next full season - but in between I'm definitely going to try my best to get some rest in there as well! :)

It's the finale!

The last hurrah of Literary Prize Fight. One last poll to finally decide who was going to win.

This is Idol though, and this is the LPF mini season.

Which means that plan did not happen.

It ended in a two way tie.

Which means we, once again, go into a Sudden Death Write Off!

[personal profile] halfshellvenus  and[personal profile] sonreir - you need to get ready to rumble, again.

The deadline to link your entries back to the below thread is tomorrow, May 3rd at 10pm EDT.

Which means that we have some sad news as well.

We are saying goodbye to [personal profile] hwango .

He's been an amazing amount of fun all mini season long - not just the writing, but the personality as well.

Over the last couple of weeks - it's been dodging one bullet after another, with an exciting run that kept everyone guessing how long he would dodge and weave. It turns out - all the way to the finale!

I'll admit, I kind of thought that maybe this would be a hwango victory lap. But alas, earwax.

Thank you so much for coming out for LPF and bringing such joy to the process week after week!

When I posted about the Not-a-spirit award, I remembered that I had a name for it. But I couldn't think of it at the time. You know how those things just slip out of focus when you need them. And I hadn't written it down, so that was no use.

Survivor actually had been the one to name it - The Fan Favorite Award. The first one ever given was to Rupert in All Stars. He ended up winning the exact same amount as Amber (who won the season), just for being popular. :)

This of course is a little different in that it's the other contestants voting - but it's the same principle, so I've changed the subject line of that post. :)

***

I considered naming it after kathrynrose - but she hated money being involved with Idol at all. So I don't think she would like that. I'll check with her estate though, they might have a different feeling...

Tinhuviel? She hated people. :D Maybe rebrand the title of winner after the original? I don't know...

Alex? Aled was an amazing writer, but he really didn't hang out with a lot of the other contestants.

Luna? Already has a Idol award named after her.

Erica_crawford? Not really her style either. Same with walkertxkitty - although there really should be something named after her...

lee_hawk? Oh man, same. I need to come up with something for that.

and of course kittymichaels won everything, So his only reward was getting to be kittymichaels. :)

For right now though it's just the Fan Favorite Award - and the deadline to get me your votes is tomorrow: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1065725.html

***

There's one more vote happening right now though - and it's to decide who wins this mini season!!! So it's kind of important. I guess. If you're into that sort of thing. :)

Do I want to stir people up this morning?

Hmmm... sure...

Uber was guilty of trusting that people weren't asshats. Unfortunately, people are.

They probably should have considered that someone was going to exploit their auto response. But it takes a real shithead to do that - and it takes someone who is going out of their way to find a problem with the company to think that they did it deliberately. I don't mean the ones who saw it initially and reacted with their gut impulse. I'm thinking more of the ones who came in hours later, after the apology was already up and Uber was giving people discounted rides, who just wanted to go off on the racist company.

I was going to link an article, but honestly, most of the ones I could find seem to just be exploiting the situation for hits and/or giving attention to troll's account.

So, since most of you probably don't know what the hell I'm talking about - because that's 99% of these posts, I'll pull back a bit and explain...

Uber, like a lot of businesses, has an auto response. I'm going to use Murielle as an example name.

If she had something to say to Uber, like "I had problems using your app", they would write back "Sorry to hear that Murielle" with the support contact information.

It makes sense from a business standpoint of why you would want to address customers by name. It also makes sense that someone would try to troll that feature.

In this case, again, let's say it's Murielle - because that makes it far more shocking, she changes her name to (the N-word). Because that's what the troll did.

Now you know what auto response would end up tweeting.

After getting the response, Murielle then changed her name back, so anyone looking it at thinks the Uber auto response team is just really really racist monsters.

I'm NOT saying that the company shouldn't have seen this coming and put filters in place. They probably should have. But I can also see why it would never really occur to someone to do.

Uber has a lot of problems. Which is why there are protests scheduled. But I think it's a mistake to go after the company being exploited harder than people seem to be going after the troll who used the word as a bait and switch to get the company to say it.

Of course, I'm sure there are people who will say I'm wrong - OK, I'm fine with learning more on what I'm missing in the subtext, so feel free to let me know!

I'm coming from a position as someone who has had a few people using "offensive" user names. (Nowhere near that word just things that were designed to get a reaction) I had to post them in the poll, because that was their name. I do wonder though where that line would be - I'm not an auto response after all. Hopefully no one ever decides to push that. But I'm sure, being the internet, at some point, some troll will.

You don't have to be a troll like Murielle to be interested in finale poll! https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1064830.html

It closes tomorrow night. So make sure to get your votes in!

A few words from Gary:

This is definitely going to be an interesting finale.

3 talented writers who all submitted perfect representations of just how good they are.

Something that I personally found interesting was that this is the first time in Idol Mini Season history that the writers in the finale didn’t use “Open Topic” as an excuse to write the traditional Idol finale of “why I should win/why my opponent should win”.

I’m going to interpret that as people finally listening to me! :)

This is also the first finale where I’ve started it on muscle relaxers!

I did something to my lumbar region - sudden sharp pains aren’t fun. It’s why I was out of commission this weekend. I spent most of the morning today at the doctor’s office and then going for a X-Ray. The fun never stops. But thanks to the miracle of muscle relaxers I’m mostly here for the finale! :)

And what a finale it is!

I sincerely love the work all three of these folks have produced for Literary Prize Fight!

I’m really happy to have them representing the competition at this level.

They took different paths to get here. But all are worthy of the crown. Note: there is no actual crown.

Only one is going to take it though.

That is up to YOU, the voter, to decide!

The poll will be open until Thursday May 2nd at 9pm EDT.

So read, comment and vote for your favorites!

This one is for all the marbles. Note; there are no marbles being given out. This time around I wasn’t even able to get an icon made. The prize went to the Top 4. So everyone in it right now already has that.

This is all about the glory, and being the last writer standing!

Good luck to everyone!

Between Avengers Endgame and Game of Thrones I think a lot of folks are going to be spending the next week in therapy.

If that wasn't true though - there is still one major epic battle scene about to happen - the Literary Prize Fight finale!

The deadline for everyone to get their entries in is TONIGHT https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1063949.html

which means the poll is about to get started!

I promise not to post any spoilers about how the poll is going to turn out! Mostly because I have no idea. Someone should ask Stephen Strange or Bran. I'm pretty sure they've already seen this play out! Maybe that's why they are hiding so no one bugs them about it!

Go to Google.

Search for "Thanos".

There will be a picture of the Infinity Gauntlet on the right side. Click it. Then wait.

Google, as always, has found a way to make special days on the internet fun.

***

If you go to Google, and search for LJ Idol Final Three the first result is from Season 3. Which featured agirlnamedluna, the first Idoler we ever lost. So, I guess that's fitting. Google, once again, has found a way to tie everything together.

But if you are looking to search for our current Final 3, just go to the results from last night: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1063820.html and see who we lost.

The three remaining contestants have a new deadline: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1063949.html

halfshellvenus
hwango
sonreir

One of these three will claim the title of Winner of the Literary Prize Fight!

If the rest of this mini season is any indication, this is going to be a slugfest!

There are some goodbyes that are easy to write, and other times when you really aren't sure what to say.

This is the latter.

Both of these two were people that I thought had a good shot at winning this season. [livejournal.com profile] whipchick because come on - she's awesome. Plus she's proven that she is more than capable of winning.

[livejournal.com profile] porn_this_way because this mini-season has been so completely crazy, just all over the board - where people seem to want something new and different, and she is someone that I knew was capable of giving that to them!

There's very little space left to navigate, but coming into this week, I had them both pencilled in as people I expected to see for at least a couple more weeks.

But that's why you play the game - to see what is going to happen.

And certainly those remaining are awesome as well! (Which should go without saying - but I'm going to say it anyway) and this just gets more and more painful as we go.

Losing these two though? In that same week? Yeah, that's rough...

Thank you to both of you for coming out this mini-season. You're definitely a huge part in what helped make it special.

Just as a "heads up", because more and more people seem to be caring about this these days:

LJ Idol polls are unisex.

Like this one: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/931251.html

Well, OK - it's *barely* unisex, in that it's almost completely women. But "barely" still counts!

If nothing else, voting is open for both women and men - voting in the same place!

If that offends you, you can vote in this separate, completely binary gender specific, poll instead. The Women's poll is located at http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/931251.html
and the Men's is http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/931251.html

I finally was able to go see Captain America: Civil War this afternoon.

As someone who used to be a huge comics fan (and recently got back into reading them, in part because of the MCU movies) I really enjoyed it. Which is strange considering how much I *hated* that crossover. That was one of the reasons why I *stopped* picking up Marvel comics. I disliked the very concept of it, and definitely hated what they did to Tony Stark during it and how it shaped it after the fact. (and of course, as someone who loved the character of Bill Foster, that will never stop pissing me off!)

A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

This is one of those weeks where, after seeing the entries, I really don’t feel like eliminating anyone. It seems cruel to have people leave the competition who have put out things that I have enjoyed this much.

But sometimes we have to do things we don’t want to do.

And so eliminate someone I shall… actually, I’m going to eliminate two contestants this week.

Much like last week though, there is a set-up of expectations on how this is going to work, and I am moving counter to that!

The contestant with the fewest votes in the first poll will be eliminated. The same goes for the second, unless that’s the same person (because they are already “out”. So it would go to the next contestant… I’m saying that in advance due to the fact that someone always asks that question. Now, when they do, someone can just cut and paste the answer! Thanks Future Idol-Question Answerer! I appreciate it! )

So make sure you read, comment and vote for your favorites. And believe me, you are going to have favorites this week. This is the kind of week where you just post the entire list and tell people who love to read “Just click a link at random, you are going to enjoy it!”

I have no idea how people are going to make the decision this week. I’m just glad I don’t have to do it!

The poll closes Monday, May 16th at 9pm EDT

Good luck to everyone!

Good morning Idolers!

I'm not sure if you saw this yesterday, but there is an anthology out there featuring several former contestants that is having an Indiegogo campaign! So check it out, and if you can help - do so! If you can't, then spread the word so that others can find out about it! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/marked-by-scorn#/ (One of the levels is $4 and you get the e-book version! That's a really great deal! With the names that I know on that list, it's bound to be a good book.

Speaking of "good books", this is a good time to mention our Amazon store! http://astore.amazon.com/li0cd-20

There's a lot of great books there as well! (and of course, just by visiting it before doing the rest of your Amazon shopping helps!)

Which reminds me that I need to start coming up with the new incentives for our Patrons! https://www.patreon.com/user?ty=h&u=70027

What are some things I could offer that might tip you over into joining the team? ;)

I had a lot to talk about today, but I've temporarily forgotten all of it! :)

I'm sure I'll remember later and put it in the comments...

OH! I have the first 12 potential topics for Season 10!! That's exciting! (Granted, about half of them were from the "not used" pile from Seasons 6-8. But I really like the new ones. It's still a way off, but I like what I have so far)

That's just one thing I was going to say. If I remember more as I go, I'll insert them. If not, as I said before - it'll be in the comments. :)

***

It's been an interesting week work wise. There was a water main break that shut us down early on Monday. They ordered porta potties, but as soon as they realized they wouldn't be in on time, they let us go. Or rather, they told us to leave and OUR bosses mentioned it us two hours after that decision. ;)

Yesterday, it was announced at 9 am that the building was shutting down. They told us at 11:30 that we were leaving at noon.

After making an 2 hour bus ride into work (my ride is about 2 hours and 15 minutes) I got a call telling me the office was closed and to turn around. I was in a "bad neighborhood" at the time, so I waited until I got to the bus depot (also in a bad neighborhood, but there are more people around) a few minutes later to hop off the bus and wait for the next one. (Plus - more options on what bus to take home)

When the bus was in sight, I got a phone call to come in!

The water main is still busted - so no running water/no restrooms. There have been talks that we will find out "in two hours" what is happening today. Which means we will find out a few hours after that. :)

***

While I'm waiting around to see what is going to happen next - YOU KNOW! You're going to write your entries and link them over at http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/929542.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
All the talk of "how things used to be" in Idol, and of course the anniversary has gotten me thinking "What are some *positive* changes?" I think a big one is that very few people have my phone number now. ;) I used to give it out, that and my work email - so that if someone had an issue that we could talk it out. You know how many people called to yell at me? Or tell me how much Idol sucked because (so-and-so) did better than "they should have"? (People doing "better than they should have" is pretty much always code for "I don't like their writing/how could anyone else?" ;) )

Yeah, more than a few.

How many people did I sit and talk to their bad days? Quite a few.

So maybe it's NOT as personal these days and I don't have the same good connections with everyone that I had in previous years. That also means that I don't get the same levels of the bad stuff either. ;)

And I don't mind the "talking through their bad days" bits - I'm only an email away if you really need to talk, or vent, about something.

It's just the "bad days" were frequently *really bad* and they usually ended up using Idol as something they could take it out on! (Because I *knew* they were having a bad time, why would I put that twist into the game now???" Um... maybe because the game isn't organized around your life and the twists have little to do with you?) That's the part I don't miss.

What else? Hmmm - I don't miss the trolling groups.

Although there is still a ways to go, I don't miss people not getting that all of the aspects of LJ Idol, and it operates on different levels, all of those are actually writing-related in that they correspond to things and distractions that all writers face day-to-day. (The Idol ones, IMO, tend to be more interesting! :D)

No death-threats and even the worst "this is stressing me out" email hasn't been anywhere near the "LJ Idol ruined my life!!!!" level.

So good job folks on being sane. Or at least "sane".

Now that I think of it, I wish double quotes were a thing ""sane"" because that's pretty questionable with this group. ;)

***

Speaking of not knowing about sanity levels - there's a Topic thread: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/929542.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Still reeling a little from last night: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/929469.html

Which, that's when you know that Idol is "appointment TV", or "appointment Internet", when you're never quite sure what is going to happen next. Heck, I set the schedule and the twists and I wasn't 100% sure (especially there at the end with the surge) about what was going to happen. I certainly wouldn't have predicted those results - in fact, when I saw the byes being used in what *felt* like a strategic fashion (it could have all been coincidence of people just needing time off - and probably was, but "strategic" is a better narrative, so I'm going with that! :D) I thought I saw the writing on the wall for someone else!

I also knew that my own twist on the votes would be unexpected in that spot, so that it would put things a little more up in the air.

That said, the poll is closed, so I can address a question that was put out there into the cyber-ether: the moral implications of byes.

Do they exist? Yes.

(Both byes and morals both exist, although some would say the latter are social constructs and the former are Gary constructs)

I'll go with this angle to it: Have there been people who, in the finals, have used, as one piece of their argument, "I never used a bye"? Yes. There have been. They were proud of that fact. They weren't judging others for needing to do so, but that was an accomplishment that they didn't.

Have there been times when someone was "boxed in" by byes? Where they didn't have one left and everyone else - or nearly everyone else - used them, at least one time I *know* (because they told me) that it was an in a purposeful strategic act to get rid of them or force them into an one-on-one with someone they thought was more likely to survive? Yes. That has happened as well.

There are moral arguments to be made with just about everything we do in our lives. Some people disagree with that, but those people are wrong. ;)

Most of the time though it's not going to be "light and dark"/"good and bad". I won't say that there are shades of grey, or how many there are, because you are writers and people who love writing in general and I don't want to injure your souls with those words. :)

All of that said - Idol is a game. It's writing. It's a game. It's a community. It's all of these things and a whole lot more to a lot of people. People decide how they are going to get to the end. Some people are going to clash along the way, when tempers get high.

People are going to approach things with different levels of comfort. And that's OK. As long as everything is above the belt and no one is trying to "game the system", it's all good.

Ultimately, all you can do is focus on your writing and make sure that it's something you are proud of that you are putting out into the public eye. Because everyone, except one person, is going to be eliminated over the next couple weeks. "Not winning" is pretty much guaranteed. But there are more ways to win than ending up in the victory circle at the end - and the best way (IMO) is to be true to who you are and putting out writing that makes you proud of what you have accomplished.

That's the true moral victory.

(Which isn't the same as an Idol victory. An Idol victory is the best victory of all!!!)
