A few words from Gary:

This is definitely going to be an interesting finale.

3 talented writers who all submitted perfect representations of just how good they are.

Something that I personally found interesting was that this is the first time in Idol Mini Season history that the writers in the finale didn’t use “Open Topic” as an excuse to write the traditional Idol finale of “why I should win/why my opponent should win”.

I’m going to interpret that as people finally listening to me! :)

This is also the first finale where I’ve started it on muscle relaxers!

I did something to my lumbar region - sudden sharp pains aren’t fun. It’s why I was out of commission this weekend. I spent most of the morning today at the doctor’s office and then going for a X-Ray. The fun never stops. But thanks to the miracle of muscle relaxers I’m mostly here for the finale! :)

And what a finale it is!

I sincerely love the work all three of these folks have produced for Literary Prize Fight!

I’m really happy to have them representing the competition at this level.

They took different paths to get here. But all are worthy of the crown. Note: there is no actual crown.

Only one is going to take it though.

Hey now, I nearly wrote "why my opponents deserve to win", then realized that you'd stressed OPEN TOPIC, and how weird would that be...

I'm upset about the lack of a crown, though! I WAS PROMISED A CROWN, GARY. WHAT ARE WE FIGHTING FOR NOW?

Huh. I've only been around for one other finale, so I'd forgotten about the whole “why I should win/why my opponent should win” thing.

The funny thing is that in my panicky final hours as I tried to come up with something, I very nearly wrote about how badly I needed to win this crown because it would be the third literary artifact I needed to transcend my current existence as someone's imaginary friend and finally become a real person. So I kind of _would_ have been writing about why I should win...or why I needed to win, or something.

Being an imaginary friend must be difficult. What happens when the real person imagining you grows up before you get the final artifact?

Then it becomes a matter of patience, hanging around till dementia settles in and you are required again.

Thanks. It’s hard to sometimes, but laughing beats crying. And they were created to protect me, so, I can only be so devastated. Some kids had an imaginary friend. I had an actual headspace army. It’s traumatic, but it kept me functional, which is amazing. 🙂

I mean, I assume I'll turn back into an ordinary octopus, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I was afraid it would be a little too meta, having already used a fair amount of meta in some of my other recipes. I think the biggest problem I had trying to write something for the finale was the number of ideas I had that felt like something I'd kind of already done this season.

Reminds me of that logic puzzle with two doors and two guards, where one guard always lies and one always tells the truth, and you can only ask one question of either of them. :O

I have never been so torn on voting as I have for this season's top five. You've all brought your A game over and over.
I shall go and read these last 3 and agonise over the ticky boxes.

Uum, this is kind of stressful and I'm not even in the running. Hope the three are doing okay. (Maybe you should share your muscle relaxers with them since you're not providing a crown.)
