You folks out there in Idol-land sure do know how to keep things interesting don't you?

As we get closer to the Top 10, I imagine that this is only going to get more intense.

The Jury convened this week to decide who to give immunity to... and once again, it was a close vote. 14 of the 15 contestants received votes. (The one who didn't? The person "at the top" of the poll this week. So the absence of votes probably had to do with a feeling that she was safe)

In the end though, they did make a decision.

***

We were eliminating three contestants this week.

[livejournal.com profile] yachiru *would* have been one of those eliminated - but she was the one the Jury selected for immunity!

Which means that those leaving this week are:

[livejournal.com profile] sobota and [livejournal.com profile] i_17bingo

Two amazing writers. One "dark horse" in this competition, who seemingly came out of nowhere to create these wonderful bite-sized pieces week after week, and the other who has grown leaps and bounds over the last couple of seasons, and finally starting to get the attention he has long deserved. (It should be pointed out that he did it all this season having only used *1* bye!)

The third person leaving us?

According to the votes - that would have been [livejournal.com profile] jexia, but she was given immunity during this week's Quick Fire competition!

So we go to the next lowest amount of votes - and come across A THREE-WAY TIE! This means that the Redemption Tribe will be making a return this week - and things get a little bit scarier for everyone!

Thank you to those leaving us. You were awesome, and I hope to see you in the Home Game, and casting your votes every week for the remainder of the Jury, to help shape how the rest of this season will play out!

There are some things that I need to look at with the poll - and some things that *I don't*.

One of those things is "Did [livejournal.com profile] gratefuladdict survive?"

Of course she did. Surviving is what she does best.

She came into Idol at full tilt - and in the first couple weeks of Season 5 had an absolute blow-out. Not the "Oops" but the kind that can shuffle you off into the Home Game... heck, have it at the wrong time *these days* and you may be shuffled off the internet completely.

I mention it not because it happened - but because she managed to regain her footing *and through discussion actually gain friends, fans and the elusive *actual respect* before it was over.

She's like that.

There have been big moments. Small ones. Her at her "worst" and her at her "best".

When she came in - she was still in the shadow of her sister in a lot of ways.

Now? There are few people who shine brighter.

The path her life has taken during her time in Idol - that's the kind of thing that I love to watch. It's almost as if it were two different people. Except that folks actually got to experience it, they got to see that transition - and it was a wonderful thing.

Congratulations.

Welcome to the 100 Club - and I can't wait to see where you are if you decide to join the 200 version. ;)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
If you love "Extreme Sports" - I hope you are following this week's poll. Because, in watching it over the past couple days and trying to project what is going to happen, I have no idea where this thing to going to end up!

Ditto for the Jury votes! Which, of course, have the potential to play spoiler to the poll and throw things into an even more chaotic state!

So, take the day off from cliff diving or alligator wrestling, or whatever it is that you do - and sit down to read some entries!! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/828189.html

***

Given how close it is - this would also be a good time and place to let people know which entries out there have gotten YOUR attention, and why! Who should make it into the Top 12??
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It's weird how excited I am about (name I've selected for the mini-season redacted)! (AKA Idol: Teams edition)

As I mentioned at the tail end of yesterday's Green Room, it's funny how it happens. It goes from off-hand suggestion to something that fully clicks in my head. If it gets mentioned on another day - maybe that doesn't happen. But something about the combination of things already on my mind and a general idea with what people were saying they wanted/didn't want from it... and something just *worked* for me!

Here's what I have so far:

A working title, with a couple variations depending on my mood
A general idea of how the site will look
How to fit in both teams and individuals
How teams would work in general
the bye system
the "main twist"

What I don't have right now is knowledge of what is happening in April (the new date for when this office's lease is up. Fortunately, I'm going to be busy with Season 9 for a little while anyway!) I also don't have the "what to do if there aren't enough people to 'pull it off'? Hopefully we don't have to answer that one!

I also don't have the excitement that needs to build up over the next few months! So hopefully YOU have that!!

Also - any questions YOU have. I probably won't be answering them - but I can at least make sure they are answered for the FAQ!

Honestly, this is the most excited I've been about an Idol project in awhile... one of those "eureka" moments! I think this could be a really cool thing. Or a trainwreck... and who can resist a trainwreck? ;)

***

Speaking of Season 9 - I hope that no one thinks that I've forgotten about what is *right in front of me*! It's just that I already know the twists and general concept - the only thing that is left for me to discover in it is WHO IS GOING TO WIN??? And that's definitely a mystery that is going to be intriguing to find out.

There is a poll happening right now: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/828189.html that is going to have a big impact on answering that question! So I hope that everyone is taking the time to get out there and support their favorites!

A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

Here we are, at the Top 15.

Sure, it seems like every week I’m impressed that we’ve gotten to that point, and every time I say “You are going to love the entries this week”. But have I been wrong?

Spoiler Alert: The answer is “NO”. ;)

One of the comments from a Quick Fire Judge was how good all of the remaining contestants are, and all difficult it was to pick between them. A recent comment that I saw to one of the entries was that it made them glad to remember their LJ log-in!

Which is exactly what SHOULD be happening at this point! People who want to see something special, knowing where to come!

If they don’t - then make sure they do!

The topic was “Lost the Plot”, but clearly none of these folks have!

Which is what is going to make it so difficult to be losing 3 of them this week!

The bottom three vote-getters will be leaving us to join that great Home Game in the sky, and into their roles as members of the Jury, helping to steer the direction this season is going to go.

But we are not there yet.

Right now we are at the point where there are some great entries to be read, comments to be made about them - letting the authors know what you think of their work, and, of course, votes to be cast to ensure that your favorites get to stick around another of this crazy ride!

The poll will close Monday, Jan 26th at 9pm EST

Good luck to everyone!

Tonight's deadline is at 8pm EST.

But that doesn't mean that everyone has linked their entries yet. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/826357.html

There are some still in need of unending amounts of SHAME! ;)

So, if you are a fan of their work - make sure to let them know you want to read it! Pretend that they are George RR Martin and stalk them, demanding that they do *nothing else* until they have sent in the link to their latest entry!

Who are these people? Glad you asked!

They are:

Where did you get your start?

What was that first impulse (that you can recall) when you realized "This writing thing is FUN"?

Because that's what it's all about isn't it? Having fun.

That's why I started writing - and through a series of paths and projects, and outright needing something to keep myself busy, that's how I ended up starting LJ Idol. Because it's fun.

Where did the fun of writing start for you? How do you manage to replenish it day after day? Year after year?

***

Admittedly, it's kind of weird talking about how much "fun" writing is when we are fast approaching the most tense time of the competition. But really, I think that's when people need the reminders to *not* sabotage themselves with stress, that it's all about having fun.

(and of course winning!! :D)

***

One person who *doesn't* have to stress out this week is [livejournal.com profile] jexia, who won the Quick Fire http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/827595.html and has immunity in this coming poll.

Everyone else? Aren't so lucky. But then again, only one person is going to end up winning anyway - so *write what you love* and submit things *that you feel good about*!

Maybe I'm not the best person to give you advice. I put my foot in my mouth plenty of times, completely sabotaging my own goals and I'm often stressed out about things that are mostly out of my control. But that doesn't stop me from continuing to hobble on, or worry. ;)

I just try to remind myself to take a step back now and again, get some air, and hopefully get to a better place, where I can see the *fun* again. That's when I know I'm back heading in the right direction.

Your topic is DUE at 8pm EST: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/826357.html 1/3 of the current contestants already have their entries in! (Which shows how few contestants are left! :D)

Btw - my html was made of fail last night. Allison's editing service can be found at Unkind Editor
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
In true Season 9 fashion, it came down to *a single vote*.

There were 10 entries and 5 of them came within a single vote of either winning or forcing a major tie-breaker of some sort! (and every single writer who submitted something received a vote!) If that doesn't tell you just how good the quality of the writers are this season nothing will.

Well, except a note from one of the Judges saying that they are really impressed with your work!

When I invite people to come in as Judges, they are definitely doing me a favor, and I always worry "I hope I'm not wasting their time with this". Thank you, for once again, not wasting their time! :)

Before I get to the result, I'd like to thank the Judges for taking the time and effort to come to this conclusion.

Your Quick Fire Judges this week were:

You know her. You love her. You covet her icon collection. She's [livejournal.com profile] roina_arwen I know she's wanted to do this sort of thing for a *long* time (and considering that, unless my mental math is faulty, she's the longest-constantly tenured member of Idol, that's quite bit of time!) so I'm glad that I was finally able to cross that off her bucket list. :)

Next up is someone else that you should know. Granted, you may only know him from his stint as a Gatekeeper. But people who know [livejournal.com profile] joeymichaels know him as something of a legendary figure in these halls. I'm really glad that I could coax him back one more time to help out!

I was also fortunate enough to ask an old friend of mine, from back in my fanfic days, to show up and help out. Brent Lambert is a talented writer and an all-around good guy. He's someone that I've always enjoyed knowing and watching grow over the years - but lately he's really stepped up and done something that makes me go "Damn, I KNOW THAT GUY!"

He is in the process of starting R.R.A.P. (Race Relations in the Arts and Politics) which will be officially launching on Feb 1st. I'll definitely be pointing you in his direction when that happens.

One of the people who really excited and impressed me this season, with dedication to LJ Idol and just that general "This is what is about!" spirit was [livejournal.com profile] eternal_ot, combining both compelling writing with an incredible attitude toward life. (Note: One of the things on her "list of accomplishments" is that she is GETTING ENGAGED THIS WEEKEND!)

Last, but certainly not least, is something who spends her time entertaining the world in her travels as well as doing some freelance editing over at Unkind Editor
Most times you would say "When she's not doing that..." but this is [livejournal.com profile] whipchick, so she is ALSO writing her fingers to the bone and doing things being the winner of LJ Idol Season 8!

Thank you to all of you for helping out this week! I know it wasn't an easy decision, but I hope you had fun reading the entries!

***

Now that's out of the way - we have our Results.

One contestant, who participated in this Quick Fire, now has IMMUNITY for Week 34, and a guaranteed spot one step closer to a chance to get into the finale!

Who is that?

[livejournal.com profile] jexia!

Congratulations!

There are still some things that I'm thinking about, that I don't quite have a response to quite yet. But since when does "not knowing what to say" stop me from posting? ;)

Instead of concentrating on what I *don't* know what to say - I'll focus on what I *do* know what to say...

First and foremost - thank you to everyone who sent emails: The people who wanted to let me know that they supported me, and those who emailed to let me know that they disagreed/were upset with what I said yesterday. Both groups love Idol. They just have different opinions on some things. Which is bound to happen in a group as diverse as ours. In the big picture - It's a really good thing.

I'm just glad when people come to me with things. Regardless of how loudly they are yelling, or how much they are praising (and everything in between). Because it means that although I'm *am* the scary man coming after you... people still know that my door is open and that I'm willing to listen. That's also a really good thing.

The "center of the storm" and I have talked and everything seems fine between us. Which makes me very happy. But I do still want to say something about the fall-out and what it means for going forward. That's what I haven't quite wrapped my head around yet. It's coming though.

It's not something that I'm taking lightly. Hopefully, regardless of where you stand on the issue, you know that much about me.

***

So anyway, some things that I *can* talk about:

How its not very surprising to find people at odds over a spreadsheet. I said this at the tail end of the last Green Room and I'll repeat it for those who missed it: Controversy over spreadsheets and what collected data actually means and *doesn't mean* isn't new. It's been happening since Season 3 when the first spreadsheets started being assembled and distributed among friends.

There are some people who swear by data collection and think that it is solid and other people who think there's a lot more to it, and that the data will never survive contact with humanity in action. The same is true for those who track voting patterns in general. Knowing that so-and-so had 23 votes doesn't mean much unless you know where the votes came from and how many of them are repeat voters. Heck, there's a lot of information on motivations that even *I* don't have, so I can't even answer things fully about "why did such and such happen" other than to look at what I had and be able to verify that it did! :)

Arguments over spreadsheets and data collection is always good for a few dust-ups and yesterday proved that was still a viable way of getting people talking!

Perhaps there is a SECRET ALLIANCE who is attempting to control the vote, selectively using the information they collect in spreadsheets!!!

(*sits back and watches the comments roll in* Secret alliances are another favorite topic toward the end of a season!)

Some of them may be aliens.

***

I'm incredibly proud to say that this week's Quick Fire managed to attract 10 out of the remaining 15 contestants! Last week it was 8 out of 17. We're definitely headed in the right direction! I haven't read them yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I know our Judges are as well. They will be giving me their decision tomorrow.

***

Our Topic though is looking a little lonely: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/826357.html

Hopefully it gets some friends soon!

If you are having any trouble with it - check out the Work Room http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/826776.html for help!

Perhaps we should start doing this in the early weeks of Idol instead of having "byes": http://www.freep.com/story/life/2015/01/20/birthday-party-show-fee/22040807/

Seriously though - sending a bill for a kid not showing up to a birthday party seems a good way of never having kids want to show up to your parties again! Unless of course, the parent is trying to stop having to organize them in the future and/or kill their child's social life in general. In which case - well played!!

Speaking of "Well Played", there was somethings that happened last night that you may have missed:

Results from Week 33: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/826108.html
The new Topic: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/826357.html

Welcome back to another week and a another Quick Fire!

It's the same drill as it was last week:

You have 24 hours to write and link an entry to this thread.

It's completely optional - but those contestants who compete in it will be able to win immunity!

It's an OPEN TOPIC

Which, at this stage in the game, can change everything for you!

The deadline to link your entries back to this thread is Tuesday, Jan 20th at 10 pm EST

Have fun!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
You have your results from last week: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/826108.html
You have the topic: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/826357.html

and the Quick Fire: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/826465.html

and in that topic, we have an opening to talk about "Plot".

I googled "Plot" quote and it took me to some from Goodreads. Here are some quotes about plots that amused me:

“When all the details fit in perfectly, something is probably wrong with the story.”
― Charles Baxter, Burning Down the House: Essays on Fiction

“Character is plot, plot is character.”
― F. Scott Fitzgerald

“Story is honorable and trustworthy; plot is shifty, and best kept under house arrest.”
― Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

“Stories start in all sorts of places. Where they begin often tells the reader of what to expect as they progress. Castles often lead to dragons, country estates to deeds of deepest love (or of hate), and ambiguously presented settings usually lead to equally as ambiguous characters and plot, leaving a reader with an ambiguous feeling of disappointment. That's one of the worst kinds.”
― Rebecca McKinsey, Sydney West

“In our modern age, there are writers who have heaped scorn on the very idea of the primacy of story. I'd rather warm my hands on a sunlit ice floe than try to coax fire from the books they carve from glaciers.”
― Pat Conroy, My Reading Life

My book has no plot. Wait, yes it does—in the cemetery. It’s a love story where one character is dead, and the other is a dirty pervert.”
― Jarod Kintz, My love can only occupy one person at a time

How do YOU feel about it?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
When you gear up to write this week's Idol topic, I hope that you are able to take the time to look it over, and carefully consider your options on what to do with it.

Unless, of course, by this point in the competition, you've just completely

Lost the Plot

What a week, and what a finish! I was starting to think we were heading to “run-off of a run-off” territory!

There is a lot to get into, so I won’t waste any more time getting into it.

First up: The news on “What Special Power did [livejournal.com profile] halfshellvenus, as the Spirit of LJ Idol, select?

Her options were:
- immunity (self)
- immunity to give away
- a bye
- bring two eliminated contestants back into the game.

All of these powers would be good until the Top 5.

She ultimately decided on the bye.

Congratulations, and use it wisely!

Now for the poll results, or more importantly, to find out who will be leaving us this week.

Once this is over, we will be at our “Top Ten”, which means that anyone leaving us at this point is pretty much a legit superstar and I really don’t want to hear that they’re not, even from themselves. ;)

I’ll go ahead and announce the Jury’s selections for immunity, since that does have an impact on the results. I had them choosing two individuals this time - and the two contestants who are immune, thanks to the literal Jury of their peers - are [livejournal.com profile] halfshellvenus and [livejournal.com profile] alycewilson!

Congratulations to both of you!

Which leads right into the vote itself.

People speculated on “what order would the polls be ranked...” and the answer is “the usual way”, top to bottom. So, if someone was eliminated in a previous poll, they can’t be eliminated a second time!

In the run-off, we lost the superstar of superstars - the person who, barring some sort of major act of gods, and/or she doesn’t show up next season at all - has such a huge lead in the “Number of Weeks Survived in Idol” that I don’t see anyone ever catching her!

Yes, we are saying goodbye to the one and only [livejournal.com profile] imafarmgirl.

We are also losing the legendary [livejournal.com profile] beldarzfixon Well, this identity isn’t legendary, but his regular one is, and considering that it’s the worst disguise *ever*... ;)

The next poll down is a little more tricky: The person on the bottom has already been eliminated. So it shifts one person up. The next person in line has immunity. Which shifts it up to a tie!

But... one of those individuals also has immunity!

Which means we end up saying goodbye to our only newbie leaving us this round! But considering the odds she was up against, it was a truly wonderful run, and I hope that she will be beaming with pride. Especially given all the buzz at various points that she might actually end up in the finals. It didn’t happen - but she certainly got really close!! She deserves every accolade she gets! Goodbye to [livejournal.com profile] alien_infinity

Next up, we are saying goodbye to someone that I, personally, wish more people had gotten into earlier than they did. That sounds funny given how close he got to the end, but I, personally, count myself as a fan. He’s certainly been one of my favorites this season, I always knew when I clicked on the entries that I would be getting something entertaining. Farewell to [livejournal.com profile] the_day_setup!

Finally, we come to the final poll/result and saying goodbye to someone who, again, I don’t think ever gets the attention she deserves, despite continually doing really, really well! So, I get to say goodbye to her again - [livejournal.com profile] yachiru

Thank you to all of you. You were amazing. I hope that we continue to see you in the Home Game! (oh, and of course Welcome to the Jury! With how close these things have been all season long, I have a feeling you are going to be having a pretty huge impact over the next couple of weeks!)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Sheriff Joe Arpaio, of Maricopa County Arizona, has decided to that instead of investigating his own office and scandals – and instead of getting the criminals off the street – that he is going to spend his time, and that of a special commission he has created, to vote in the LJ IDOL poll! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/587399.html

They have also tried submitting votes for the Spirit Award, but I had to tell them they were not eligible. After which they declared that I was probably a Kenyan.

Fortunately, as the ONLY Real and True ‘Merican – I built a fence to keep them out, a really tall one, and had my monkey army deport them back to wherever in F-Up’d Land they came from.

Maybe now they can help keep the Mexicans from coming into this country to have ”anchor babies” in Michigan!! You never know where “those people” will end up, and what they will retroactively declare that they did, or did not do.

It’s a good thing that Sherriff Joe will now have the time to investigate that!

And you. Because, quite frankly *someone* should probably be investigating you. I’ve seen the things that you have been up to, and quite frankly, it’s pretty scary that you are walking the streets free! ;)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
There is this meme I’ve seen going around saying: “For All the Guys Who Complain That Women Don’t Come With an Instruction Manual: FOUND ONE” with a picture of 50 Shades of Grey/ any number of the “men do this/women do this” BS that just propagates this mindlessness.

And then there was the video of the guy on Glenn Beck going around screaming about the President paraphrasing Truman.

I read the comments on the second one and honestly feel like I’ve lost several IQ points.

When I read yahoo, I suspect most of them are trolls. When I read things like attacking various fact check organizations, includng snopes, I have to wonder if I’m not just fooling myself.

I get forwards in my work email all the time - not just political stuff, but “household tips” that seem to be completely wrong. So I look them up - and sure enough, they aren’t based on anything remotely credible.

So you tell people that those sources are the ones who are wrong - that you can indeed have this miraculous sounding result, and if you don’t, then maybe you did it wrong... but then when actual news comes along - and they try to correct the idiocy coming out of some talking head’s mouth - well, you’ve already convinced those in your sphere to just ignore them.

It’s brilliant really, and it’s amazing how many people actually believe them - or don’t do their own thinking, who don’t have the innate curiosity to go out there and look at information and process it.

Then again, I shouldn’t be surprised.

After all, you can find out all you need to know about women from 50 Shades of Grey, and all men are assholes. I read it online.

I would go check it out somewhere. But that’s all biased garbage.

There are days when I seriously worry about humanity.

I know though that right now all you are doing is worrying about yourselves: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/587399.html

A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

There are some weeks that ease you into things, wrapping you up warmly in the blanket of their embrace. There are other weeks that go through you like a hot poker through, well, you.
Guess what kind of week this will be?

I gave contestants 4 topics, and asked them to choose 3 of them. So, they did.

Which means that I divided up the polls by topic.

There was also a run-off scheduled for this week, those two have had their entries combined into one link. So, when reading them, please consider the overall collection.

While reading everything else, it should be all about the individual entry.

Some of the polls are open to everyone. Some of them are friends only. I selected this< on a rotating basis of “open”, “friends”, “open”..., before the first entry was linked.

It should make things a little more interesting!

Also in the “interesting” category is that the Jury will be awarding the much-sought-after immunity again this week. Considering that we will be losing a total of five contestants (one from each poll) that means that immunity will guarantee someone a spot in the Top 10!

You know what else will?

Surviving this week!

The poll closes Thursday, July 19th at 9pm EDT

Good luck to everyone!

(and yes, I just saw that I didn't change the week! ;) )

As the votes for SPIRIT OF IDOL keep pouring in - one question remains: Who transformed the votes into a liquid, and who is going to clean up all of these puddles on the floor?

Seriously folks - only turn your votes in as a solid! It's easier that way! It's also easier, in the long run, if you actually submit all 15 names, in order of preference. That way it's easier to do the overall rankings. Because, as much as you think you have the one and only choice - and it should be obvious to everyone else, your #1 pick is going to be someone else's #15! It's just the nature of humanity.

If zebras could pick, I assume they would have the same problems. Only that would be the nature of zebraity. Or maybe creatures with stripes.

While we are waiting to hear about that though, there is something a little more pressing/time sensitive - the new topics! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/585760.html

If you are still struggling, there is a Work Room up as well: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/586211.html

How was YOUR weekend? Mine had it's up and downs - but OMG the ups included one of the best moments in my life. :) Well, other than eliminating you folks. Because that's something that I also enjoy a great deal! :P
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Like Daniel Tosh insulting a heckler, another Week of LJ IDOL is here and isn’t going anywhere any time soon!

I actually have a lot to say about that – none of it coherent though, so I’ll wait a little longer and see if I still feel like saying it. ;)

What I DO feel like saying though is that the results went up last night: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/586484.html

With the “non-elimination”, there was some concern that people might misunderstand that and assume that a contestant was cheating or doing something they shouldn’t have been doing.

They were not.

I need to make that much clear, just so no one walks away with the wrong idea.

There was an account – and there is a good chance that it was a friend who signed up for Livejournal to show support – and no one thought “let’s give Gary a heads up on this one”. It voted. The votes affected the results, so I flagged it and officially made it a tie instead of getting rid of someone.

Because no one should be going for someone else’s mistake – and yes, now two people are on the block BUT it was a matter of a single vote. Had it been two votes, with only one of them in question, we wouldn’t be having the conversation. It’s a small price to be sure that everyone gets a fair shake.
