The results this week may require a flow chart. But hopefully not a very intense one.

At any rate, I will explain things step by step as we go.

There were *two* sacrifices this week. Most people knew about them in advance, but in case you didn't - we lost [livejournal.com profile] alephz and [livejournal.com profile] rattsu who violate the rule that there is only supposed to be a limited amount of talent in one relationship. ;)

Since we were losing four people total, two from each poll - I took one of them from one poll and the other from the second - so that the polls would lose only 1 more person each.

As you know, there are TWO ways to get immunity these days - there is the Jury and there is participating in the Killing Floor. KF activity was *severely* limited this week, and no one qualified to cast a vote. Which means that no one was eligible.

You can only receive immunity *once* (from each body of voters) - and that fact ended up coming into play this week, because the voting from the Jury was *tight*. BY ONE VOTE they ended up giving it to someone who had it from the KF before, but never from the jury... and absolutely saved them. Fortunately, the person with the second most votes was actually safe this week anyway. So it worked out. Well, except for the person leaving us....

The contestant WHO RECEIVED IMMUNITY FROM THE JURY of their peers this week was: [livejournal.com profile] swirlsofblue! Congratulations.

All of this means that the two people leaving us this week are:
[livejournal.com profile] grunge
and
[livejournal.com profile] reckless_blues

Two remarkably talented people who have put out incredible work this season. I hope that we will be seeing them in the Home Game, and I *know* that I will dealing with them as members of the Jury, helping to shape how this season is going to end!

What do you deserve?

I wrote out a couple paragraphs going into the background of why I'm asking that question and giving it parameters before deleting them - because, fuck it, TELL ME WHAT YOU DESERVE.

However you want to interpret that question.

***

One thing that the contestants DESERVE is for you to read, and vote on, their entries: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/822267.html So make sure to do that before the poll closes tonight!

"Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die." - Mel Brooks

A friend reminded me of that quote last night during a conversation about the origins of "Always Punch Up" (see yesterday's Green Room for more details).

Last night I was also reading David Byrne's "How Music Works"
http://www.openculture.com/2011/05/david_byrne_how_architecture_helped_music_evolve.html (this isn't the book, but it's part of a TED talk he did on a subject covered in the book). He talks about how music evolved to fit the spaces that it was being performed in - and that in general creativity did that, it morphs to fit in pre-existing forms. Which I thought was interesting, especially in light of people writing for LJ Idol and then turning around and adapting those works for other venues.
(Which has been happening quite a bit over the last couple of years)

The two bits don't have a lot to do with each other, but for some reason my head has put them together as "the importance of perspective in the creative process" - that how you look at things is going to be shaped by the space (physical or mental) that you are in.

As the culture around us changes, our art changes as well, to fit within that space. But, of course, that culture isn't an universal thing. Which is often difficult to remember. Even with global communications, people often end up in a bit of an echo chamber where there are like-minded voices combined with the worst of what "the other side" has to offer - and that ends up being a lot of the world view.

How has the space you are in impacted what you create, and how you create it?

***

Btw - there is a vote going on: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/822267.html

with all sorts of awesome creations! So go check that out!

If anyone wants to Home Game - there's a link for that as well: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/820882.html

A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

There are some weeks where I think “THIS is why I do it”.

Reading through the entries below, it’s definitely one of those weeks.

There is some really good stuff out there. I know it’s always tough to get back into the swing of things, but I hope that if you are reading this note, you let your friends know there is some great writing going on here - and they should come enjoy it!

Unfortunately, being Idol, it also means that we will have to say goodbye to some of our writers.

In this case, the bottom two from each poll.

The “good” news is that we actually have *two* sacrifices. I’m going to spread them out, so really there is only one person per pool going out due to the vote. So you can send them thank you notes, once it’s officially revealed who those two are. It’s only “good” in quotes though, losing anyone at this point - especially that way, really sucks.

But for two people, it’s going to be one more chance - so I thought that I would point it out before we even get out of the starting blocks.

Of course, there is Immunity - one that will be handed out by the Jury and one that will be handed out by the participants in the Home Game/Killing Floor. So there is no telling how this is going to go in this, the first official poll of 2015!

Read. Comment on the entries. Vote for your Favorites!

Repeat in the second poll. :)

The polls close Monday, Jan 12th at 9pm EST

Good luck to everyone!

Are you Charlie?

I've seen all sorts of reactions from the killing in France yesterday - everywhere from horrified to "The magazine was offensive toward minorities. That was the consequence."

IS IT?

Or is the consequence of the things you say and do (especially in the context of satire) that some people might not like it and *say something* about it? Or is it something where you should be asking "Am I prepared to die over this?"

Some really big questions for creative folks... what creative endeavor are you willing to put your mark on and say "yeah, this is what I'm about" in a world where death could be the result (Hopefully not, but there is certainly a lot more negative public reaction than has been the case) - and how does that shape what it is you are creating?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
*Tap Tap Tap*

Is this thing on?

I knew it was risky to have a break at this point in the competition, but I also knew that you would need it in order to "live your lives" over the holidays. I think this proves that I should never, ever let you have lives!

From now on - everyone wanting a life will have to get a signed permission slip! ;)

So what have you been up to and why should you be given permission to continue it? ;)

(OR, what do you want me to *deny permission* to, so you don't have to do it anymore?)

and of course your shame: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/821385.html

It may be a new year, but it's the same old shame! :)

The deadline is TOMORROW NIGHT and the following folks still need to get something in.

(Mostly putting this up because I know it's always a rough start after the break and some may have been hitting the snooze button and somehow missed it!)

Today is the last day of the Marriage Ban in Florida!

Granted, there are going to be "hold out" counties who are going to drag their feet and declare that they are "unable to hold marriages due to budgetary issues", but they will still be issuing the licenses.

On one hand, it's amazing that this has been as big of an issue as it has been in the United States for so long... on the other, I've seen such an incredible shift in people's feelings in my lifetime that it's like I'm staring at a different planet!

Congratulations to my home state for finally getting it right, even if you had to be forced by the court to do it...

A few generations from now, people are going to look back at all of this - and I hope that they laugh at "how silly people were" rather than be disgusted.

***

One thing that people will look back on with AWE is your entries for this week: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/820156.html

(how's THAT transition???)

if you are still having some issues you want to hammer out, take them to the Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/820280.html

and of course the Home Game/Killing Floor http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/820882.html

What, of interest, is going on in YOUR home state/country?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
If you want to write on the topics for the week:

Intersubjectivity, Shibusa, rapture of the deep, captcha the flag, the bystander effect, Overwatch

But are not currently a contestant - this is the place for you!

Just link your entries here!

This is also the place for constructive criticism of those pieces.

If you submit at least one entry *and* give constructive criticism on someone else's piece OR just give constructive criticism on *two* different pieces - you are eligible to send me a vote to give a contestant immunity this week!

With the amount of contestants dwindling, that's a lot of power in your hands! So I hope you take advantage of it by participating!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
You always think "I have more time" only to find those waning days of vacation catch you off-guard and suddenly you are back into the fray of everyday life.

In my case, at least it's only one day before being off for the weekend again.

But that "work part of a week and then have a day and half off" thing really screws with your sense of time!

How are YOU? Are you "back to work"? Did you never leave (because your work is at home or just because your work doesn't have a "downtime") or do you still have a few more days of blessed freedom?

***

Regardless - your freedom here at Idol has come to an end, and the new topic is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/820156.html

along with a Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/820280.html

After a few confused emails (and comments) I corrected the topic to add the additional one. So that's already been solved. :)

***

It's the first "Week" of 2015!! How are YOU going to celebrate?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Time to roll up your sleeves and get back to work!

You know these topics well. Most of you have already picked from the list twice. Once in Week 20 and then again in Week 25. Which means there are still 3 of them that you haven't done.

Until now.

Now you are doing TWO of them.

The topics are:
Intersubjectivity, Shibusa, rapture of the deep, captcha the flag, the bystander effect, Overwatch

Pick two of them *that you have not already done*.

(make sure to let me know which topics you have submitted)

Both entries need to be linked back here by Thursday, Jan 8th at 8pm EST

Have fun!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
You have had time to rest, but now we need to get back to the business of writing! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/820156.html

I hope you took advantage of the break to knock off a few of those cobwebs and find new inspiration.

Especially given that you have topics that everyone knew would be resurfacing at some point. So that's not even that big of a surprise!

It may be a shock that we would start going into "write two entries" in a week... unless you are a veteran and then you were expecting that as well!

***

For those wandering in, or who may have forgotten - the Work Room is the space for writers to bounce around ideas and help each other through potential road blocks! So, if you are experiencing any, this would be the place to talk it out!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Until about an hour ago, I was preparing for another massive tie. Which, would be appropriate given what you folks delivered this week! It was starting to have the feel of “one of those weeks”.

Instead, we have results, which means eliminations aka saying goodbye to people who have become like old friends to many of us over the course of 32 weeks. (and some who actually *are* old friends to Idol)

The run-off, to me, may have been the most difficult. It’s one of those times when I’m really glad that I vote for everyone, because I wouldn’t want to have to make that decision between the two.

In the end though, we are losing

[livejournal.com profile] everywordiwrite

In the main competition, it gets a little tricky. There, we are losing three more:

[livejournal.com profile] alleyalligator and [livejournal.com profile] baxaphobia

are both leaving us.

As for the third... well, I said it got tricky.

That’s because of the Immunity being handed out by the Jury.

They cast their votes, and it was yet another close one. This time it ended up going to [livejournal.com profile] medleymisty, who DID end up needing it. So, congratulations to her!

However, that means that the person with the next fewest votes is eliminated instead.

Which means the final contestant leaving us today, is yet another veteran...

[livejournal.com profile] xo_kizzy_xo

Thank you so much, all of you. I truly appreciate everything you have done this season, and I hope that you know how amazing it is to have made it to this point with such a huge field of fierce competitors! Welcome to the Home Game, and more to the point, to the Jury!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Happy July the 5th!! The Day After “Independence Day” AKA the “day you call home and see if your parents can spot you a little extra for rent, or maybe do a little laundry over at their house when you come over for dinner”!

I hope everyone had a nice 4th. Especially the people who do not celebrate it because they live in ForeignLand! ™

I ended up celebrating it the only way a true ‘Merican should – watching fireworks explode (in their usual celebration of Chinese culture) while standing in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart! The fact that we were standing near a fireworks dealer meant that every kid within a couple hundred feet was setting something off as well, and the smoke blanketed the entire area!

Another thing that is going to “blanket the entire area” is the screams that come from the results of the poll closing today: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/582723.html

Why? Because screams are the appropriate way of expressing yourself at the end of a poll! That, and uncontrolled sobbing!

Apparently, all it took for me to face my previously white-knuckled holding on to the edge, fearing for your life terror of going underwater was having the now 9 year old that if I manage to continue to be the luckiest person on the planet might be my future "bonus daughter" tell me that she was going to teach me how to swim.

She was just so matter-of-fact about it, and so confident. I didn't want to let her down.

I went up to my mouth during the first bob... holding my breath on the second... then getting up to my nose... it took me a few tries, but I finally went all the way under.

It freaked me out. I won't lie about that.

It seriously freaked me out. But I did it again... and again... and again... over the course of an hour or so, and then a little more the following day, so that it wasn't just a fluke.

It's kind of weird to be admitting that I can't swim, and that it's taken me THIS long just to allow myself to go under - but we are in the business of sharing personal things around here. Which means every once in awhile, I need to show my human side. Possibly to lure you into a trap! ;)

Seriously though, it felt like I could do anything.

Although, I'll admit, I think *not* going under is still going to be my norm... I do hear goggles make the experience much better, so maybe I will try those - and learning to hold my breath longer!

If that wasn't enough for a weekend - there was another first... the first time that I helped make breakfast for "the family" in my girlfriend's new house. Maybe you know the feeling - maybe you don't... but that first time when you go from "someone who is around" to working side by side in the kitchen, and actually *being* a part of the household, if only for a little bit... Making the whole thing even *more* special for me was that I was there because it was the daughter's birthday - and she had *asked* me to stay to celebrate it with her! Yeah, that's the kind of stuff that makes your heart grow three sizes. :)

Anyway - enough about me! What's going on WITH YOU - and more importantly...

Do you know what it's like to face down your fears of the poll? http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/582723.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

Following what could very well go down as one of the single most transformative extended weekend of my life - so far - we are back in the saddle of Idol, and getting back down to the business of the business-at-hand. Mainly, getting rid of these deadbeats reading entries and voting for our favorites!

With 22 people left in the competition, and a special run-off going on between two of them, I don’t suppose anyone will be surprised to know that there is definitely NOT going to be a “special voting round”. It’s business-as-usual!

The contestant with the lowest vote total will be eliminated in the run-off, and in the main competition poll, we will be losing the bottom three!

With immunity hanging around, out there, (as awarded by the Jury) and as tight as things have been getting, this should be a pretty major week!

But then, isn’t it always?

The poll will be closing Thursday, July 5th at 9pm EDT

Good luck to everyone!

Due to circumstances beyond my control (well, somewhat under my control, but the results of the decision are much cooler than it would have been otherwise) I am posting this Green Room about a half hour early! So, greetings from the future!!!

Due to the same reasons, I am also pushing the deadline back two hours http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/581689.html

So, if you are still struggling, there is a little extra time for you to make thing perfect!

There is also a Work Room for you to enjoy http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/582071.html

So much to say, and not really any time to tell you about it. (All good stuff. Or enough good stuff that the bad stuff isn't really worth mentioning)

So, what good stuff do YOU have to talk about today?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I've heard a lot of concern that I will be having a vote to hold you in contempt, as a political ploy.

Please don't buy into it.

I hold you in contempt already. I don't need a vote! ;)

What we DO need though, is to make sure you know where to find the topic link! It's here: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/581689.html and the Work Room is here: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/582071.html, the Results from last week are here: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/581458.html and YOU are here. Unless you're not, in which case we're all talking about you. You should probably check on what we are saying!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It's the Topic that will bring us into July!

Yes - July!

What is that topic?

You guessed it, it's an OPEN TOPIC.

The deadline to link back to this thread is Monday, July 2nd, at 10 pm EDT

So have fun - bring your A-game, and show me why you deserve to be in the Top 20!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Now that you know that it's an OPEN TOPIC - how are you going to proceed? Have you been storing up ideas, just in case something came up again? http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/581689.html

***

One thing that caught my attention over the last couple of weeks was the "assumption" of an entry.

I'm not really sure if I'd considered this before I saw it, but once I did, it clicked with me.

What I mean by that is - are you writing your entries with "the Idol audience" in mind, or are you writing toward a larger audience, some of whom might not know anything about Idol? (Those unfortunate people!)

What other assumptions are you making with your writing? What might need to be explained, if someone were coming across your entries for the very first time?
