Voting is off to a slow start this week. But then again, the posts were the same way. ;)
If that is any indicator, there will be a rush of votes at the very end!!!

I usually watch all of the political conventions - and write commentary on them. But this year, I'm not sure I have it in me. I will say this though from the brief bit I've seen (so far) of the RNC, that the two times that I've seen Brian Wilson he was in his late 70s. He couldn't hit all the notes anymore but surrounded himself with backup singers who could. It was a smart way of doing it for people who wanted the Brian Wilson experience.
No, Brian Wilson wasn't at the RNC (that would have been a huge shock if he had been)
Who was there though was Lee Greenwood, who has managed to make an entire career out of being an one-hit wonder. (I checked and he had 20 songs that charted, so he doesn't actually qualify as an "one hit wonder", but come on, we all know him from one song. :D)
I mentioned Wilson because Greenwood also has lost the vast majority of his vocal fastball. But based on what I saw/heard, he's not acknowledging that. His voice is still OK, but wow, time is rarely kind to any of us. He may want to consider getting some more backup singers around him for these important/high visibility moments.
Considering the two major candidates for US political office, I'm wondering how Biden is going to top Greenwood.... any non-relevant singers out there in their 90s available? ;)

Note, I say all of this having recently seen Bob Dylan earlier this year! But at least he was never known for having a great vocal range. :D
I also saw Pinetop Perkins, who needed assistance getting on and off the stage. But in his case blues artists are SUPPOSED to be really old and weary. It's kind of weird to see young blues singers. It feels like they haven't quite earned it yet. ;)

Date: 2024-07-16 01:37 pm (UTC)Man, so many of these artists are getting old. Tony Bennett at the end was just sad, though I mean, kudos to him for performing as long as he did.
Today I have therapy (check my Idol entry for why this is so exciting!) and we are relaxing since I'm not nannying today. Only 5 more nanny shifts and I'm back to school!

Date: 2024-07-16 01:44 pm (UTC)I didn't watch the RNC but I am 100% betting that they have enough conflict with cease and desists and artists banning their work. I honestly don't think the DNC will have the same issue and will be able to do the star studded extravanganza they usually do since its not going to convert or divert anyone either way. For the record I have zero clue who Lee Greenwood without looking it up and since I don't care I won't. You know who probably won't perform at the DNC even though they would if invited? Tenacious D.

Date: 2024-07-16 03:13 pm (UTC)Except of course people like Keith Richards and Iggy Pop. Who yes, show the scars from it... but it just makes them seem even more indestructible. :O

Date: 2024-07-16 05:51 pm (UTC)Of course, I always identified more with late 60s-70s music than 80s music, so that could be part of it.

Date: 2024-07-18 08:44 pm (UTC)It wasn't until later on that I started to appreciate Led Zeppelin (I had to make my peace with Robert Plant's voice, which can get kind of nasal) and The Who. REM was a late arrival (I'd turned the radio off for a lot of their years), and OMG was I all over grunge. Whoo!
I was thinking just this week that I used to like Steely Dan more, but now it kind of annoys the crap out of me-- except for something I discovered last year, "Don't Take Me Alive." I don't like the lead singer's voice (or his love of melodic noodling), but the chorus on that is pure ear candy. :D

Date: 2024-07-16 03:12 pm (UTC)I should probably recognize the name Lee Greenwood but it’s not ringing a bell.

Date: 2024-07-17 02:24 pm (UTC)I'm so happy our town shelter posted about why they're not participating in the "adoption fees waived" week which is going on right now. Their main reason is not, surprisingly, because they lose at least half that fee because vetting the dogs/cats to get them ready for adoption costs twice as much as the fee, even with a discount. It's because time and again people who can afford the fee end up not being able to either take care of them and/or their housing situation. They call landlords on behalf of a potential adopter, and 3 times out of 4 the potential adopter has no idea that the landlord won't accept any kind of pet. The upshot is that there are dogs/cats who've been sheltered for more than a year. Most of the shelters here are no-kill, which also means that shelters elsewhere tend to send all their "surplus" up this way.
Sorry for the dissertation but I'm VERY agitated right now.
