It feels like I've been in "advice mode" quite a bit lately, both in "real life" and online. What is the best advice that you regret *not* taking! ;)

A friend told me a long time ago that I should travel more, that I would really enjoy it. The actual logistics of travel have always stressed me out, though, so I mostly didn't. I regret not taking that advice - I could have been seeing more of the world, meeting more nifty people, and generally having more adventures!

Today there are lots of people stomping around in my house knocking down walls and making noise and generally being construction dudes remodeling both bathrooms. This... is kind of stressing me out. I hope I'll manage to write today. I finished a draft of one entry yesterday, so I might just focus on editing it. We'll see. Noisy things are noisy.

I would love to travel more. It's in my blood! My grandparents on both sides went all kinds of places well into their 70s. My dad regularly just hops in the car for impromptu road trips, or finds cheap plane tickets to Europe and goes on a whim. Plus, I love driving! The problem for me, though, is mostly that I don't want to travel alone. It's not safe for a woman, and it wouldn't be near as fun. I don't just make friends with random people I meet. Right now, I don't have anyone to go with, not easily. There's so much planning, money, time... It's hard right now. Hopefully I'll be able to do it more when I'm older.

The process and hassle of traveling is a *royal* pain in the ass (yeah, lost baggage, flight delays, and TSA snoopiness is totally how I love to spend my free time) but there are so many fun people to annoy meet in so many different places!

People don't usually give me advice. I wish someone had advised me to kick the ex-best friend to the curb, but no one did. If they had, I probably wouldn't have taken it, so we can pretend and say that was the best advice I didn't take.

I've been exactly there. Someone did try to tell me, or at least hint, that I should leave that relationship like a bat out of hell, but I was too wrapped up in it. I found an old diary entry where I said I didn't trust her and ought to get the fuck out… and promptly did exactly the opposite of that. We were "friends" for another two years.

Seriously, I know, for the most part, people mean well when they offer it, solicited or not. They see you having an issue and want to help.

It's one thing if you ask certain people for advice. It's a whole other thing if the advice is unsolicited AND who is giving that particular advice.

People ask me for advice fairly often - I'm like a wise den mother in the Sims community, lol. But I always try to tell them hey, this is just what I'm saying from my experiences, and it may not work for you, and I'm trying to respect your emotions and your autonomy here and just answer your questions and maybe give you a new way of looking at things, but you don't have to listen to me if you don't want.

I know what it's like to have a "friend" 'splain things to you, "for your own good". *shudder*

On a totally different note, Ember is going to the vet's in a few minutes for her paw. I don't know what she stepped on, but she did something to it, and she's having issues putting weight on it. She's also been chewing it like mad.

Pet owner = human parent of a perpetual toddler in many respects.

I suppose I should get dressed, given that the vet probably wouldn't want to see the ratty PJ's I'm wearing right now :p

Hi Green Room! I've been so busy this summer, what with becoming an Aunt on July 9th :) I have the sweetest nephew ever! I love him to pieces! You can't beat that new baby smell either. I can't believe he'll be one month old this Friday!!

I honestly don't remember what is the best advice that I *haven't* taken. If I don't take the advice, why remember it, hmm? I'd just be kicking myself later if the advisee turned out to have been correct, LOL.

Still haven't written a word on either of my two topics; pondered one idea for one of them, decided it was getting too involved (history, yuck) and I think I've finally got a direction to go with it. With luck, I'll get a decent draft done either at lunch or sometime this evening...

Then I just have to worry about the *other* topic... *HEAVY SIGH*

Advice I wish I'd taken: "Are you sure you're not gay? I think you might be into women. Why don't you try dating a few and see how you feel?" If I had taken this advice as a teenager, I probably would have saved myself a ton of confusion in high school, college, and early adulthood. But I lived in such a homophobic part of the country that I'd pretty much learned that gay people were an entirely different species, like some sort of mysterious phenomenon or something, and I couldn't possibly be one. (It never seemed reasonable to dislike them or anything, because that was stupid and pointless, but asking me if I was gay at the time was like asking me if I was a turtle - not insulting, just "Whaa...?" and totally impossible and nonsensical, because turtles were turtles, and I was me.)

Advice I'm glad I had the common sense to ignore the shit out of: "You need to try and fit in more, or you're going to end up in nerd corner." Well, I *did* end up in need corner, but I own that shit, so suck it.

I also lived in a homophobic place, and I also learned that gay people were a different species. I turned out to be straight, but it was quite a surprise when person after person that I really liked turned out not to be straight. It was beyond my comprehension for years. Ridiculous. :P

This has been my life with LJ since they did that "scheduled maintenance" however long ago it was. I get time-out messages like every 20 seconds, like it's cool. GET IT TOGETHER, LJ. YOU WERE WORKING FINE FOR ME BEFORE YOU DID THAT MAINTENANCE.

Ah. Yes. Keeping my student loans to a bare minimum. There was a semester or two when I took out the max offered so I'd have a cushion, and now my loan payments now are outrageous (and are going to last for eons). (If I'd been thinking in terms of financial strategy as well as academic strategy, I'd be in much better shape. As it is, mint.com is my savior in keeping me on track with everything financial.)
