I've received a couple emails wishing there was a poll this weekend. Just because folks miss voting on something. So, in their honor - here's some clicky boxes!!

[Poll #1196877]

Whatever you have been up to, or are going to be getting up to this weekend, I hope you're having fun!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Awhile ago I asked the current contestants if they would mind if I posted a few fairly off the top of my head comments about each of them. They said that would be ok. I almost did it at 7, then 5, but I didn't want to space any of them out around a vote. . . so now seemed like as good of a time as any.

I reserve the right to edit once I start hearing people yell.*g* But it's the things that crossed my mind at the time when I sat down to think about each of them. They all are around the same length and cover the same categories.

We will be having four of these - one a day for the next four days, in alphabetical order according to user name. This is the fourth and final entry.

Consider each entry to be your chance for a mini fan club gathering to talk about what YOU LIKE about each contestant and their writing.

Odds of Winning: 1/4

Full Disclosure: She has been on my friends list the longest of the four.

First Impressions: I noticed her fairly early, and much like [livejournal.com profile] kittenboo had a good feeling about her lasting awhile. But considering the size of her friends list at the time I wasn't quite sure how it was going to happen.

Writing: The quote that I liked was that she has magical, accessible work that brings the reader along for the ride, which knowing her, could be just about anywhere. Which is completely true. She has a way of bringing a sense of place and energy to her writing.

She reminds me of [livejournal.com profile] tru2myart, both in the feel of her writing and tendiency to attack solid walls head first when she felt she had a point to make.

Social: She was a frequent Green Room commenter throughout the season and I think that had a lot to do with people checking out her work and getting to know her back when the field was crowded and kept herself a highly visible figure in the community.

"Game": She has a pimping for votes alliance with one of her closest friends since day 1.

Other than that, to match her own blunt style, I'd have to say that her "game plan" has consisted of telling people exactly what she thought of everything and everyone without very much of a filter. She's the only person I've ever seen who's *had a friends cut DURING a season as the race got tighter*. I think that sums her complete no nonsense approach nicely.

She was named as a target back in when several "power players" were trying to throw each other under the bus. Which is why, when confronted, her name was brought up and it was taken to mean she was one of my favorites by folks wanting to distort things for their own benefit.

Current Impressions: Serious threat to take it all. Solid writer with a stubborn streak a mile long. If there's a way to win through sheer determination and drive, she's the one most likely to find it.

She has a solid base of support within the community as a well as a network of friends and supporters who love her work, and that can make all the difference.

A few words from [livejournal.com profile] tru2myart:

Good morning and welcome to Challenge Number 2!

First, let me thank all of you for the outpouring of support. When I asked Gary to submit the first challenge I never dreamed so many people would come back and join in. I am thrilled and I can only hope this is an upward trend.

Now, I didn't do a very clear job of explaining WHY I issued the first challenge in my last entry and I wanted to be sure to clear up any confusion. So here, by way of three cups of tea and a lot of late night thinking, is my attempt at a concise explanation:

I'm trying to raise community spirit.

No really, that's it. I want to see the community bond again.

I've been a participant here for the last three seasons. When Gary told me I wasn't able to take part in Season 3, or any season thereafter, I was disappointed but after what I gained from playing this "game" there was no way I was just going to walk away. Any chance I had to chime in with topic ideas, game twists, anything Gary would listen to, I was going to do it. He rarely listens to me but I've stayed anyway. :D

The spirit in the community dwindles at the end of every season, that's pretty much a fatal fact of almost any online contest. If you're not able to participate you tend to drift away until you can participate again.

However, I've noticed a real downard spiral in the community spirit here than I've seen in seasons past, especially in the last few weeks. It may just have been me personally but it had me concerned. All of you have worked so hard these several months, I couldn't stand the idea of seeing Idol take such a sad turn at the end of it all. Especially since the final four are still writing their wee hearts out to stay in it.

So I thought to myself, why did we all join in in the first place?

Well...speaking for myself, it's because I wanted the glory of it all, the winners hat, the million dollars....

Ummm...no.

Other than a very lovely icon there was no prize. What I won was my writing talent back. It's not the best and brightest talent but it's mine and relish it and it was this competition that gave it back to me.

And it occurred to me that noone would have stayed in this thing for all those months, struggled and fought that hard to get entries in on time, put their lives on hold and bit that bullet unless they really loved to write.

What better way to bring everyone back, get that community spirit brewing again than to get everybody writing one more time?

And in doing so I've noticed more people taking an interest in Idol as a whole. I've been reading the entries and I've seen commenters who never participated before contemplating joining next season. And if they're interested in the community they're going to stop in and read and what better way to support the final four as well than to get new readers interested and involved?

Spirit, spirit, spirit!!

So that's my thought process behind the whole thing and hopefully it makes sense as it's 7:30 in the morning and the three cups of tea are not killing the desire to go back to bed after only 3 hours of sleep.

That being said, CHALLENGE NUMERO DOS!!

Please pick four more topics from the topic groups and post them back here by Sunday, June 1st 3 PM fake time EDT. You can write all of the, one of them, none of them. You can just read, comment, whatever you'd like, it's up to you. This challenge is writer's choice, a way to support your finalists as well as challenging yourself to write again. Writing those last four entries for me was hell but really invigorating, how 'bout you guys?

You can find the topics in the topic threads where you can also find the entries that the final four are writing. I owe the final four an apology, I had meant to post a link back to their entries in my last challenge but I kept editing and editing to get it right and completely forgot the last most important paragraph.

I won't forget this time.

They are the most important reason we are all still here:

[livejournal.com profile] chite
[livejournal.com profile] kittenboo
[livejournal.com profile] porcelain72
[livejournal.com profile] tulip_in_yellow

Their entries are here and
here .

Please read them and give them your love and support.

That's all for today. Write on Writer McWritersons!!

Just a note on the above, I think one thing that Penny (and other people ) tend to forget is that *it's nice outside*right now in most places. Not only do people drift off in the last few rounds (until the final when they all seem to come back for a look-see) but when it's around this time of year, it doesn't matter who you are or how much people love you, it's difficult to compete against the great outdoors.

I am proud of the people who have come out to play the Home Game this round! FOUR OF YOU are actually Final Four competitors in previous seasons! So you know how tough it can be!

That said - I have MY CHALLENGE TO YOU. I want you to follow those links above for the Final Four's entries as they continue to come in. Read, and let them know what you think. Not just a "you rock", but actually what it brings out in you. Quality responses are always better than lots of them after all.

Odds of Winning: 1/4

Full Disclosure: She is not on my friends list, yet

First Impressions: I was excited to see her. She had that "cynical/serious writer" thing going on and much like the other "artistic types" who I saw coming in I thought she would be a much needed voice in the evolution of the season either that or one of the people who were the most likely to say "Screw this!" and drop early. When she didn't I figured we'd be seeing her for awhile.

Writing: The first, and thus far only time I've "broken the fourth wall" and directly mentioned an entry was one of hers. I thought her structure was solid, and her voice clear, but that she was missing an emotional element that would push her work to the next level. I never mentioned it to her, but out of nowhere, not long after I had the thought, she did it in an entry and absolutely nailed it. I got crap about doing that, but if I saw someone hitting an entry *just right* I'd do it again in a heart beat. With her practical style of writing, infused with humor, she acually reminds me quite a bit of [livejournal.com profile] tinhuviel.

Social: She's a bit of a loner, and has had moments during the course of the season when I've wondered if that was going to end up hurting her, but has managed to come out her shell more and more as the season has moved along. She has managed to gather quite a following, adding it to enhance her already solid relationships.

"Game": I'm not entirely sure she *has* a "game plan". . . other than the pimping for votes alliance she has had with one of her closest friends since day 1. That said, I think the times when she has reached out to others during the course of the competition have had a bigger impact.

Current Impressions: Serious threat to take it all. She's quite well positioned to make a run. She has been vocal on various issues throughout the season, but not as vocal as some. Nor as silent as others and the ability to pull a rabbit or two out of a hat with her entries when she needs it the most.

She has a solid base of support within the community as a well as a network of friends and supporters who love her work, and that can make all the difference.

All the entries are in!!!

That's right. Not only did our INCREDIBLE FINAL FOUR manage to make the deadline, they did it with TIME TO SPARE!!!

You can read their amazing work by going to http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/162336.html

So I'm putting Stage Two into effect starting now!

The Final Four need to select four new topics in the thread below.

Good luck, and have fun!

Good morning Idol. *yawn stretch*

Have YOU been reading the FINAL FOUR entries? Man some incredible stuff in there so far - and they are just warming up!!

Honestly there's some really great stuff in the Home Game too - as more and more former (and future?) Idol contestants come back to the fold to write in solidarity thanks to [livejournal.com profile] tru2myart and her insanitywacky ideas!

All of this translates into there being some damn good reading out there, and all available here to get your clicky on with!! Please make sure to comment to everyone you do enjoy (be it Final Four or a Home Gamer), and let them know how you feel. I think most people around here know the importance of feedback to the writing process, but I also think that a lot of folks get busy and/or think that "someone else" will provide it. Make sure that "someone else" is you this time ok?

That said - what have been some of your favorites in Stage One?

***

For that matter - how the hell have you guys been?

I've been all right. Not too awful and nothing too good. So holding steady onto thin air as usual!*g*

[livejournal.com profile] kittenboo

Odds of Winning: 1/4

Full Disclosure: She has been on my FL the second longest of the four.

First Impression: I'll be honest, I had a gut feeling she was going to do really well. I wasn't sure how it was going to happen, but there was a raw potential in her writing that I thought was going to be take her a long, long way. Obviously I was right.

Writing: The quote that I like the most was about one of her more "sexual entries", that it was "hot and surprisingly touching". I think that says a lot right there.

There's a raw emotional energy to her work, regardless of what she is writing about that I think shows through and captures her audience. I was actually struggling to figure out who she reminded me of, until a friend of mine pointed to [livejournal.com profile] dissolvedgurl who long time Idol followers will no doubt know is one of my personal favorite writers, and people, in general.

Social: She's gotten out into the Green Room, and formed bonds with a lot of people who didn't really feel like they were part of a "group", thus forming one of their own. But she's also managed to keep a fair amount of respect across the board. Which isn't easy to do.

"Game": She's one of the cases of someone who, for whatever reason, wasn't getting the attention she deserved early on. In fact I *thought* there was a chance she could have been eliminated at a couple points. She and some others bonded together in sheepstations and she really came out of it a stronger writer and competitor in general. She became a bigger fish in a smaller pond and has benefited from more one on one face time with some of her fellow players as a result.

She is also someone who had the potential to have "deep pockets" from the get-go, but didn't use them.

I think that gained her a lot of respect. It certainly gained mine.

She probably has the best head for the game that I've seen, BUT manages to keep it in check and concentrate on her writing. Which is a fine line to walk, and she's been doing it.

Current Impression: Serious threat to take it all. She has a solid voice and isn't afraid to take risks with her entries to stand out in the crowd. She has strong community connections as well as a network of friends and supporters who love her work, and that can make all the difference.

A Challenge from Season Two Winner[livejournal.com profile] tru2myart:

Congratulations to the final four. All of your hard work and determination has paid off. Out of over 150 people YOU are the final four!

:applauds and throws streamers:

:takes a look at this weeks topics and how much the final four have to write:

Hooo boy.

I'd be willing to bet that you're ready to rip your hair out right now. 16 entries...16 entries!!!! Even I was thinking "What the frick Gary?!?". I took my concerns to him, he explained his thoughts to me, and although I don't agree completely (not like that's unusual or anything) I understand what he's aiming for.

He's forcing the remaining four to lay it all on the line, to throw in everything they have. If you complete this round there will be noone, NOONE, who can complain that this was not a challenging and teeth grinding writing competition. Noone will ever be able to say to you that you are not writers. Only the best of the best would be able to walk through the fire it took to get this far only to continue to push themselves even HARDER to get to the next level.

You can do this, all of you. You're damned fine writers and I'm proud of you all.

That being said, I'm ashamed to admit that when I first saw the challenge my initial reaction was "Oh, I would have been SO out of here!". After all, I have four children, a full time job and barely any time to write what I do as it is.

Shame, shame on me. Am I writer or not? Did I earn Season 2 or didn't I?

So, I'm offering up a challenge to myself as well as all former competitors.

Let's write these entries too. All 16 of them, in the time frame offered.

We can do this. I've read all of your entries this season and the talent was amazing. You may not be in the final four but you earned the spot that you had each and every one of you. You are an incredible talent and we can do this!

I'm rusty as hell and I feel like I'm going to have to pull some serious rabbits out of my butt (no pervy pun intended :grins:) but I know I can do this.

And more importantly, I want to do this.

I really want us all to support the final four. This challenge is not only going to help us keep our own writing strong, not only going to give us a taste of how difficult this stage of the competition is, but it's going to offer us one more opportunity to bond as a community.

So let's do this thing!!!

Pick one topic from each of the four categories, write your entry and post it here before this Thursday. As soon as Gary announces the next time frame we'll start a new post and pick four new categories.

There's no reward for this one, no voting, no moving up in the competition. Only the pleasure of well written words and supporting your team mates.

Let's play LJ Idol one more time.

[livejournal.com profile] chite

Odds of Winning: 1/4

Full Disclosure: She is the most recent of the four to join my friends list.

First Impression: I've stated before that I had trouble keeping some people straight early on, and that [livejournal.com profile] chite was one of those. She was "one of the C's" and "one of [livejournal.com profile] rm's friends". She seemed nice enough, but she had the tendiency to blend into the field with a lot of bigger personalities were fighting it out around her.

Writing: The quote that I like about her writing pegged it as "powerful and approachable". I think the latter part of that is her strength. She's a storyteller along the lines of a [livejournal.com profile] welfy, and has a very straight forward and approachable style that brings people into her world and engages them.

Social: I haven't heard a single negative remark about [livejournal.com profile] chite. She's managed to stay out of conflicts, and stay in the chat rooms.*g* Even the people who don't "know" her on a personal level, know her as the chick with the pink hat who loves Coke Zero!

"Game": Very low key and friendly. Which might be "game" and might just be who she is. She's managed to defy some pretty long odds and surprise quite a few people by getting to this point. Until that is they give her writing a second look with an open mind. Then it starts making sense.

She stayed toward the middle of the pack for long enough to not make it onto anyone's radar as a "threat". Which might just be the key to her success, staying away from the problem areas and just keeping herself focused on writing and making friends.

Current Impression: Serious threat to take it all. Well liked across the board and putting out some her strongest work toward the end of the competition. She's very much a "journal writer", and brings the same sensibility to her "regular" entries as she does her Idol entries.

She has strong community connections as well as a network of friends and supporters who love her work, and that can make all the difference.

There are always going to be people who don't like each other. It doesn't matter how big or small the group or where you happen to be - heck, people don't even have to actively *do* anything in order for folks to take a dislike to one another.

I understand that - I think on one level or another, we all do.

The point is that we behave as close to being adults as we can manage*g* and move on to the things we *do* like.

That said - I'm throwing the question out there. . . especially considering how close to the end of this season we are. . . you've been here for *7 months* interacting and getting to know these folks, who are the people that you are going to walk away from this experience being HAPPY that you had the chance to meet???

I know my personal list is rather long. How about yours?

[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Season Four was going to start with a bang!

I planned it all out. It was just going to be intense.

But then I talked to a couple people, including [livejournal.com profile] kithan and [livejournal.com profile] tru2myart and they talked me down. People needed to have time to "get into it" before you threw them to the wolves. I agreed and we had the start we ended up having. Which was a good thing.

Then we came to various places in the competition where I was going to do it again, and was talked down. It wasn't time to do it yet I was told. They were right.

Now however, it *is* time. You are the FINAL FOUR. A hair's breath away from winning. You've proven that you can write the hell out of pretty much anything I throw at you. You've proven that you can navigate the social elements.

It's time to see what you can do with what I like to call "The Kitchen Sink". Why do I call it that? Because that's what I am throwing at you for Week 29. There's a reason that I sent an apology to the final five for what was going to happen in the final four. Why? I like you guys as writers and on a personal level and felt bad. Not bad enough not to do it, but bad.*g*

Last week I had you write *3* entries, and then pick your best when you were done.

This week you WILL NOT be picking your favorite entry of the ones you write. You don't have that luxury to fall back on.

All of you have is writing the grap out of the topics. Yes I did say topics.

This time you have *4* topics. Kind of.

This is where you need to make sure you are following me. If you have questions, email them to me at clauderainsrm@gmail.com and I will clarify.

This challenge has FOUR SECTIONS AND FOUR STAGES.

The sections are lists of four topics. You will each pick ONE FROM EACH olist. You can not choose a topic someone else has already chosen.

Each section has four topics, 1 group is from me, 1 group is from fellow contestants that were submitted as potential topics, 1 group are four topics selected from contestants who made the top five, and the final group is previous topics including a "second chance re-do" where you have a chance to go back to a topic from this season that you don't think you did a particularly good job on, or wish that you could have taken from a different angle and try it again.

The topics are:

Section A:
Home - kittenboo
My Greatest Accomplishment - chite
Fire
- porcelain72
Memorial - tulip_in_yellow

Section B:
Never Have I Ever - kittenboo
Organization
- tulip_in_yellow
The Thing of It is - porcelain72
My Perfect Day - chite

Section C:
One Lump Or Two - chite
Running Out
- porcelain72
Favorite Book and Why - tulip_in_yellow
Comfort
-kittenboo

Section D:
"Do over" (previous topic redux other than "open topic" which you can not do, if you need a list I can send it to you) - porcelain72
Current Events - tulip_in_yellow
The Biggest Crisis Facing the World Today - chite
What I Wish Someone Would Ask Me- kittenboo

You can post which topics you want to pick from each group here. Yes, I'm saying that the FINAL FOUR can post in the topic thread for this purpose.*g*

Now comes the "stages" part.

The first stage, these four topics need to be linked back here by Thursday May 29th at 1pm EDT. If someone misses the deadline, obviously that person will be eliminated. If more than one person misses it, then the person with the least amount of entries in is eliminated. If tied, there will be a run-off. I mention this because if *everyone* gets in their entries, we go immediately to STAGE TWO. Which is the four of you picking *different* topics off the above list and writing them... and so until either you have completed all the topics or someone is eliminated. If everyone gets to the end, we will vote on *all* the entries. So slacking off on them could, and probably will, hurt. Not that I think anyone at this stage is going to be giving anything but their all, but I want to say it just in case.

Good luck!!!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
If someone were to say "Gary has a favorite to win", by pretty much any definition there would need to be two major factors involved in making that determination:

(1) Me saying "She's my favorite to win" would be a pretty solid one.

(2) Me actively getting excited when someone signs up because I'm a bit of a fan, that would probably be a pretty close second.

Last season I did a lot in the way of personal evaluations of where *I* felt people were at during the course of the season. I did a check at one point this season and people indicated that they didn't want them. So I checked again at 7 and they said they were fine with them. For one reason or another I just never got them the way I wanted. . . that said, back in Season 3 I made a prediction at the midway point at who the person was to beat. It wasn't the expected choice, or even *one* of the highest vote getters. Rather it was someone that I thought combined all the elements it takes to win with a writing style that not only engaged the reader but showed a great deal of promise for further growth. Unfortunately real life caught up to her and she had to drop out of the season before she could realize that win.

This season I was actually lamenting that she hadn't come back. . . and almost as soon as it left the tips of my fingers, there she was!

For me, the start of this season was a bit rocky writing wise. But that's because I was used to seeing her going full-tilt. That, and I'm sure there was a bit of rose colored glasses on my end of things.

But she developed on that promise she showed last season, and now despite being voted out this week does have a record of her own to hang on the wall - Best Performance by a Returning Player!
Rarely does someone coming back for a second (or third in some cases) season do better than they did the first time around. This season several of them did, showing that it can be done, and done well.

She did the best at it, coming in *5th out of 155*!!!

A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrmme:

Every time I don't think that I can be any more impressed with this group of writers, they manage to surprise me.

Absolutely stellar job this week with THREE entries a piece. Which would have been hard. So they had an even *more* difficult task - picking which one out of the three to subject to the vote!

I was surprised by some of the choices, since I would have picked different ones. But I think that's what makes the process so interesting - to see what someone would pick *for themselves* as their favorite piece!

Anyway, our time with these five is about to end as we will be losing one of them.

The poll opens now and will remain open until Sunday May 25th 9am EDT. (aka [livejournal.com profile] bretzysdude's birthday!

The contestant with the fewest votes will be leaving us and our TOP FOUR will be advancing into one of the most challenging weeks in the history of LJ Idol!!!!

So remember, your vote could be the one that keeps your favorite in the hunt!!

Good luck to everyone!

Good morning.

LJ Advisory Board elections opened yesterday: http://community.livejournal.com/lj_election_en/25463.html

Those who want to support someone (whoever that might be) should go over and make sure their voice is heard. Otherwise I certainly hope they will STFU when something happens that they don't like. Just like in other aspects of life, if you don't show up to voice your opinion when it actually matters, you are saying you don't care what happens either way. So, if you don't care what happens on the site - Ok. If you do, there's a link.

In other news, CONGRATULATIONS [livejournal.com profile] fidgety ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT!!!

If you haven't yet, you might want to go check out the Free Topics/Home Game thread: http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/161179.html some really neat stuff going on there from some "newbies".

So what have you guys got planned for your Memorial Day weekend other than massively making with the clicky boxes once the poll goes up?*G*

Good morning!

Two things today -

1. How about that David Cook?  I am a wimp and a sucker so there I was at the end of the show both crying and cursing my DVR for cutting off his last performance.  (I would have used one of my David Cook icons made by the talented [personal profile] tryslora if I thought I could get away with it.)  :-)

2. Only two more days at my current full time job!  YAY!  The IL people are coming up today to say goodbye.  Yesterday we had a taco bar for lunch for my going away party.  And I got a $50 gift card for Best Buy which I will NOT be spending on [personal profile] clauderainsrm no matter how much he tries to convince himself that I am.  :)

So how are you all this morning?  How are the entries shaping up this week?  I haven't had time to read anything but I'll catch up this weekend in time for voting.  What's going on in your world today?

Good evening.

I thought now was as good of a time as any to throw some Free Topics out there for you.

For people who may not know what a Free Topic is, it tends to come from one of you guys and anyone can write on it and post the link back to this thread.

This thread is also the place to post your Home Game entry (the topics that the current contestants are writing).

The Free Topics for this week are:

Friends at a Distance Tell us about an LJ friend who is the furthest from you in outlook (ie: intellectual / lifestyle / political / religious / etc)? What makes them special to you or why do you keep them around? (from [livejournal.com profile] roina_arwen)

A little known fact. The advent of the internet has given us access to a host of fascinating, amusing and unbelievable facts about the world around us. It's now time to enlighten your readers on a fact you discovered that either taught you something you didn't already know, entertained you or made you go "yeah, right!" (from [livejournal.com profile] desert_rose71)

Anonymity (unfortunately I lost the user name attached to this one, I just have the name "Liz". So please me know if this one is yours, although considering the topic, it's pretty funny.*g*)

The deadline to link your Free Topic and/or Home Game entries here is Monday May 26th at noon EDT.

Good wee hours of the morning Idol!

I figured that I might as well post before I actually go to sleep instead of when I'm actually asleep at work!*G*

I pretty much spent the evening over on Hulu watching Season 3 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which is, as always, time well spent.

Well that, checking out the finale of Our Inferior Television Cousin and just shaking my head in confusion in general.*g* Which I found myself doing pretty much every time I checked in to see how they were doing.

More importantly though, I've also been checking out the entries that have been posted so far:
http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/160221.html

Have you???? Some absolutely amazing stuff there. This week is going to going to continue the trend of being a really hard choice to make.
