Good morning.

LJ Advisory Board elections opened yesterday: http://community.livejournal.com/lj_election_en/25463.html

Those who want to support someone (whoever that might be) should go over and make sure their voice is heard. Otherwise I certainly hope they will STFU when something happens that they don't like. Just like in other aspects of life, if you don't show up to voice your opinion when it actually matters, you are saying you don't care what happens either way. So, if you don't care what happens on the site - Ok. If you do, there's a link.

In other news, CONGRATULATIONS [livejournal.com profile] fidgety ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT!!!

***

If you haven't yet, you might want to go check out the Free Topics/Home Game thread: http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/161179.html some really neat stuff going on there from some "newbies".

So what have you guys got planned for your Memorial Day weekend other than massively making with the clicky boxes once the poll goes up?*G*

Tearing myself away from the kitties for one more day of work before a 3 day weekend.

Sneezing my head off.

Trying to get people to vote for the LJ Advisory Board.

Trying to get people to encourage people on their friends list and any other communities they are active in to vote for the LJ Advisory Board.

I'll do my Idol voting in the morning.

I might actually plant something this weekend. (We hold our breath.)

Ok, now I'm really late. kthxbai

Sleep. I plan to catch up on some sleep this weekend.

After some good rest, I will firm up the plans for my next major driving excursion. I have already reserved the car: three weeks in July.

Lastly, I am going to spend some time just "being" with my dearest one.

ETA: A second, hearty, MAZEL TOV to [livejournal.com profile] fidgety because once is not enough.

How does this election matter? All I see is that it'll be one specific person that is designated for LJ to ignore in matters of common sense.

LJ has never listened to its user base before. As a matter of fact, they have a great track record of actively ignoring us, to the point of making the same mistakes over and over again.

IMNSHO, if LJ wants to make real change instead of distracting the masses with flashy toys, they'll dismiss the entire abuse staff and hire competent, trained *PAID* workers that know how to do the job instead of knee-jerk morons. That will convince me that LJ is starting to listen to their user base.

Date: 2008-05-23 01:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] porcelain72.livejournal.com
Agreed. The cynical side of me believes this is an empty gesture meant only to placate the user base. I really don't think that when the time comes to make system/service changes the powers that be are going to say "But wait, let's see what [Member of Advisory Board] thinks, we can't go ahead without their approval."

And honestly, from the few "platforms" I've read of the nominees, none of them really seem to represent me as a user. They're either known trolls or fandom people, and those aren't "my" people. So, yeah, honestly, I can't get too excited about any of it. But I probably will end up voting for somebody anyway, just so I'm still allowed to complain. ;oP

Morning.

Congrats [livejournal.com profile] fidgety!

Plans...enjoy my day off work today. Go see Indiana Jones, do some errands, go to a costume fitting in the early evening. Tomorrow is a graduation party. The rest, who knows...just going to go with the flow.

I've been continually disturbed by the reactions to any attempts to work at changing LJs policies. While I understand that disaffected cynicism is very hip these days, I'm amazed at the vehemence with which people are advocating indifference.

As a cynic, I do understand the desire to believe in ones impotence to avoid disappointment. But to attempt to persuade people to inaction is absurd and harmful.

The argument that LJ is a company and therefore its customers should simply take what they get is, to me, strange. Certainly LJ has monetary desires, but to suggest customers have no effect on policy is absurd. I'm regularly put in mind of serfs justifying the abuses of their lord. That's how a system like that continues to work--once many of the victims themselves participate in the perpetration of their abuses, how will those abuses end?

Now I also get that many people object to the methods used to affect change. But I've heard no alternatives or simple wishing that something substantial changes. I know it is cliché, but tearing down the ideas of others without offering any of ones own never changed anything.

Yes, it is stylish to ridicule anyone who takes the internet or any part of it seriously. But like it or not, LJ is a powerful force in many people's lives. I wouldn't know most of you but for LJ. It is unusual in that its users are both its product and its customers. The internet is still relatively new and providers and users are still mapping out how it all will function in the future. To my mind laying down is not an option because if you do, you'd better get comfortable because a lot of folks will be walking over you.

Bottom line: If you have ideas for changing things for the better--let's hear them. If all you have is scorn for anyone who tries to change things, then STFU.

I can tell by the quality of your entries that your an intelligent man, and you obviously feel passionate about this. But excuse my ignorance, but I don't understand what it is that you anyone else is trying to change, or
what is it that is going to get better or worse. What are the complaints. So far all I know is some people are up in arms that the two membership levels one that if free, but "gasp" has advertising, which is obviously unacceptable.

Now to be honest, I tend to decide who to vote for in on important issues like TherealLJidol or the next president on my own. With respect to this election, I voted for RM since two member of my friends list who I respect recommended that candidate.

Frankly I'm far more interested in the policies of my cable company, internet provider, cell phone provide, public utilities...you get the picture they are charging me real money for a "service"

Aww, congrats Fidgety! *passes out cake in celebration*

My parents and grandmother left this morning for England. I wish that I could have gone with them. (My grandmother was born and raised there. We still have extended family over there.)

And I just had McDonalds for breakfast. Those southern chicken sandwiches aren't too bad... ;)

Tonight I've got plans to watch Casablanca since I've never seen it before. Saturday night I'm going to see if I can arrange a night of drinking and cards with friends at my place. And Sunday, I plan on throwing a killer 5th birthday party for my rotten little son. Other than that, I'll be attempting to get as much rest as I can.

Then on Tuesday the hubby and I jet off to Alaska for our much-awaited cruise! YAY!

No set plans for the weekend. Hope to go see Indie. But other than that who knows? Just ot taking the bus for 3 days will be a holiday in itself. This morning's ride was all sorts of horrible. Bad driver plus someone talking at top volume on their cell phone for an hour. Arg!
Weather is improving and I went out to lunch. Fabulous spinach and fruit salad! Yum.

Weekend Plans

From: [identity profile] minikin.livejournal.com
1. Wait for Flar to come out of surgery, then play nurse for Flar
2. Host 20 or 30 people at my house for the Anybody Wanna Potluck
3. Attend church service on Sunday morning

During the party, we will eat, tie-dye t-shirts, light a bonfire, make sushi, and generally just hang out.
