Good weekend! Friday night we had a Mad Hatter's Glow Party at the library for teens. We do a Mad Hatter's party each year on a Friday the 13th. Their fave part is when we play Twilight Tag in the library. We have almost all the lights off and they hide in the dark. There's one seeker, and as they find people, the other folks become seekers too. Such fun.
Yesterday I was sedentary while planning our summer vacation - Grand Canyon here we come! Today will be laundry, clean the garage some and finish my entry!!!
Crap. And that was me. (which gives a clue how my weekend is going)
I don't know how people manage multiple LJ logins.
I wish you could have two windows open, and sign into one or the other in separate windows and have LJ figure it the fuck out, but noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
If you have Chrome, you can! You can set a window as incognito and then you can log in with your other account. I'm a mod at Hogwarts Is Home, so I always have my actual LJ open in one set of tabs and my mod stuff open in the other.
unsolicited advice -- I went to a workshop as a teen and was given the advice to write even if it sucks. Daily. It's like a garden hose in spring. It's been sitting in the yard and is full of sludge and bugs and meh. but if you don't run it (write the bad stuff) you'll never get to the clear water.
I pretty much suck at taking my own advice, but it works well when I do.
This season is weird and somewhat scary, and I have a feeling it's going to be like that for awhile.
That sentence has multiple applications.
Meanwhile, I'm mourning the announced death of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (http://penpusher.livejournal.com/765365.html). In a way it's not surprising that the show is over. People don't view a circus with the same regard that they used to do. And certainly the way people react to animals being a part of performances, the way the acts are often regarded as not so impressive and of course people's continuing hate/hate relationship with clowns, it's maybe surprising that it lasted this long.
Plus, as a lot of people I know have been pointing out, there's a new Circus coming to town on Friday, so we better make some room.
Yeah. The traditional circus seems to be a dying art, and animal respect and care is a significant part. My kids never wanted to go. I went to one when I was 5. I barely remember it.
Ringling was always a target for organizations like PETA and others specifically because of their high profile. The joke around the show was that Ringling made PETA profitable! But knowing what I know about the show, Ringling was among the best at caring for and treating their animals, as their efforts with the Elephant sanctuary in central Florida can attest.
But that's not a battle worth fighting now. The show is over, though that Elephant sanctuary will continue. No word on what will become of the warehouse full of circus costumes and all of the props and items used on the shows.
The circus is something, similar to baseball, that you are indoctrinated into early in life. If you don't get it as a kid, you probably won't care about it as an adult and won't bring your own kids to it, so that makes a lot of sense to me.
I went as a kid and hated it. I disliked the clowns and thought making animals perform like that was sad. I took my kids once as an adult and still disliked the whole thing.
I was actually wondering last week how much longer it would be around, so I was surprised to see my question answered today!
Now, I love Cirque du Soliel. The magic and mystery and trapeze work mesmerize me!
The circus isn't for everyone, that's for sure. But that show is a part of the history of the United States in a big way, and the fact that this institution is shutting down is similar to Coca-Cola or McDonald's closing...
To me, the elements that make Cirque du Soleil work well involve the music and attitude. And unlike the dinosaur of the Ringling show, that only had minor variations over all of these years, this Cirque used a whole new approach and it obviously worked for you!
I can see that, and regardless of how I feel about the circus, if it was something that meant a lot to YOU, and you are sad it is gone, I'm sorry.
Recently they closed the Po Folks in my town, which I guess is just called Folks these days. It has stood on a central corner for 30 years but within days the place was torn down, like it never existed. I didn't visit it often, but it made me feel sad to see it close, as someplace that had been part of my home for so long.
Point is, if something peripheral can have that kind of effect, I know as someone with true ties to RB you are hurting. I am sorry.
I thought of you last night with this announcement.
What will all those clowns do?!
I'm pretty heartbroken. RB&BB has been an Important part of my life since the first show I saw at age six. I've tried to never miss them when they've come through town or close by. I don't know if I "buy" the elephant reason entirely....I do know that the evening shows I've attended have been poorly attended...but the children's shows have been sold out. So that makes me even more sad.
It's just another closing of another show. A one-hundred and forty-six year old show.
The expenses of a circus, especially one of this size, are tremendous. the two full length trains that criss-cross the country are a part of it... all of the crew that run load in and load out at all of the venues they played. It is work and the profit margins were likely razor thin these past couple of years.
The whole elephant issue is something that could be discussed for a long time. But in the end, what always matters is will the show cover expenses.
It's difficult to know if Ringling might begin again someday... but for now, our hearts are broken, too.
My weekend is speeding by. I wrote my entry on Friday night at work. Posted it Saturday afternoon, before work. Now I'm trying to read some entries, before work.
I'm on hour 24 at work over the last two days, and have another 12 hour day left before I get time off...
It's been cold, rainy but had a nice dinner w my Fuzzy1 last night and a Zumbathon to go to w Zumba friends today. I've accomplished a lot over my long weekend and still have one day to go.

Date: 2017-01-16 03:24 am (UTC)I suspect I'll be seeing them in more yards around Gibsonton. (which is just down the street, and home to a lot of old performers)
Or an expansion of the circus museum on the Ringling estate in Sarasota.
