- Deadline looms, poll looks awfully tight: Coming into the last day of voting for Week 1, the poll numbers are “too close to call” on who will be leaving, with a good ¾ of the field in danger. Interested parties are urged to speak out in favor of the entries they love and get other people to read, comment and vote for their favorites!
- In a related story, newbies coming to the polls need a little extra love. So, make sure that you take the time to check out someone new!

Has anyone seen Amazon's announcement that they're going to be accepting fan fiction to sell to the masses? The pay rate is pretty decent. I signed up just to see if it'll take off.

Today is going to be spent trawling for literary magazines to submit to, and bemoaning my lack of ripe bananas to make banana bread with.

There is something that I want to make sure that I say in public. I tend to say it every, oh, year or so... :)

There are a lot of newbies this mini-season, and I hope they are feeling welcomed into the community. I'm sure some are, and I'm just as sure that some are not.

Just like when the last group came in, it was the same way...

and the group before that...

Once you have been on the firing line for any length of time, you become the veterans. It's weird to think about that for a lot of people, because they think of themselves as still figuring things out. But it's also true. If you've played before - you are a veteran!

Which means it's up to you to make the effort that other people made for you. Or, if you didn't feel especially welcomed, to make a greater effort and "do it right".

I'm not saying to vote for anything you don't happen to like. Especially since the polls are this close, I personally think that a lot of the voters are going to be "last minute" this time around.

But I *am* saying that with only so much time in a day to read, that you should put aside some of it for people you *haven't* read before. After all, you expect them to check out your stuff, it's only right that you check out theirs! And tell your friends if you find something good! Who doesn't like hearing about a new movie/album/book! People like finding out about new things, that also goes for new LJers that you have discovered!

Yessss. I am so glad you said this. After harassing so many people to play, I'm worried they will go quickly and feel left out. And the fact that people were reading and commenting when I was a newb in s8 was a big factor in my thinking I might just belong here, despite zero experience with or confidence in writing at the time. :)

I don't keep a good enough spreadsheet to make recommendations - I just put a YES or NO as to whether it will get my vote. The intersections, in general, have worked really well together, so that's been cool to read!

People should really read recklessblues and his partner. Of course, people should be reading EVERYTHING, but for some reason he is not getting the comments and votes that he deserves. He is a great writer, and if you guys ignore him and let him leave this soon you will be missing out on a lot of heart-breaking beauty.

Also, I have a bit of advice for the noobs.

In season 8, I tried to be all strictly moral and I didn't plug the poll anywhere, not even on my journal, unless it was an intersection week and someone else's fate depended on me and/or I was really desperate for some reason.

But now I've figured out that a lot of people vote in the poll without reading everything. So hey, use some game theory, say oh well if no one else here is going to play fair why should I, and pimp that poll out! I linked it on my Tumblr and drew in my diehard Sims fans, and I'm seeing results. I also just pimped it on my journal for my non-Idol LJ friends, and I may just go pimp it out on Facebook too now. Or...after work, so people at work who keep up the company Facebook page won't see me on Facebook during work hours. ;)

If the people who vote won't read your entry, get the people who did read it to vote for you.

ETA: Having read all the comments above, just wanna highly recommend (as others have already done) that everyone read everything, even if you don't have time to comment. If you know you're going to run out of time, start by reading the folks at the bottom of the poll and vote for your favorites among them. The people at the top of the poll aren't likely to be impacted by your failure to read/vote for them, but someone who doesn't have already have a well-established audience, even if they're an outstanding writer, is very likely to be impacted by your failure to read/vote for them.

If you are a newb and you want to get noticed right away by as many folks as possible, comment (thoughtfully) on as many other entries as you can and hang out in the Green Room. The more people see your username, the more likely they are to click on your entry in the line-up week after week.

The other thing I'd recommend, thanks to LJ's poll wonkiness, is to keep a running list of the people whose entries you like in a given week, even if it's just in an e-mail screen. If you vote and then go back later to add a vote to someone else, you'll almost certainly have to click in all your votes over again, and you don't want to forget someone inadvertently!

i fully admit that this week has been a busy and crappy one, and while i read everything the first week, i might not get to everything this time. i can't even begin to imagine what it must be like in the beginning of a full-fledged season. you're right though, i imagine people who've been around sort of know who they like, or vote for friends, and some people might get neglected.

the green room thing has been tough for me, i'm secretly (?) a little shy and avoidant.

anyway, thanks for the advice! the list was suggested to me week 0 and it helped.

I read all the entries this time around! That's sadly rare for me. I never comment much, especially since there are so many to get to. I also just don't have much to say, a lot of the time. That's also why I don't comment a lot in here or on people's non-idol entries, or in conversations IRL - if I don't feel like I have something worthwhile to add, I stay quiet. It definitely comes back to bite me, as I don't get to know people (and they don't get to know me). Not a great thing in this kind of competition!

On a midday break from jury duty, half-dead from staying up too late reading Idol entries.

But thanks to the public library's wifi, I finished all the entries and voted!

Now let's just hope readers for "Yay" for me in Idol, but that the two attorneys doing jury selection this afternoon vote to dismiss me. Criminal trial, husband was a former prosecuting attorney... keep your fingers crossed!

I just got back home from a few days away-- without wi-fi--- except for a few hours I stole on my cousin's computer so I could read some and vote. I usually try to comment at least a few words on every entry I read but just could not do it this week. Sorry, folks. I'll do better in the next weeks and I won't be going away again till July!
I found when I was a newbie that any comments-even just a word or two--bolstered my confidence and made me feel more a part of the community. It took me a while to jump into the GR but as much as people tease...no one really bites. ..and it is a lot of fun!

Busy day! I've been on the go since 6AM doing this, that, and the other thing. The fact that I've been awake since 4AM only points to the fact that my body is more than ready to return to work...
