Green Room - Week 34 - Day 7
Jul. 19th, 2012 11:08 amIf you missed it, the Spirit of LJ IDOL, for Season 8, was revealed last night: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/588074.html
What you haven't missed, yet, is the poll: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/587399.html
It's a big poll, with big stakes. Which is what has been keeping the vampires away.
There may be big steaks as well. So let the cook know how you want them.

Date: 2012-07-19 03:21 pm (UTC)I'm less proud of the fact I was using the reading as a reason to procrastinate. I really should be working on my novel instead. Especially when I'm working on a scene I've been dying to write! But it sort of led me to have Thoughts about my sexuality, and watching a DVD with a friend led me to think about how bisexuality is (not) represented in the media. Which meant I wanted to write about that instead of work on my novel. Really, though, I know it's all procrastinating excuses. I think I might be afraid of actually finishing this thing.

Date: 2012-07-19 04:18 pm (UTC)Also, I got some rather shitty news this morning, so that sucks. Getting rejected from college because of not having the right math class is fun. My application to matriculate at the school where I was unofficially taking classes got rejected. At first, I didn't know why until I called a couple people and they said it was because I didn't have a fucking MATH class which I didn't even know I needed because I suck at bureaucracy. I need a C or better in an 100 level or above math class and an 100 level or above English class. I have the English class, but I don't have the math class. Have I mentioned I LOATHE math? I suck at it, and it hates me right back.
The other awful thing about this is because of the way admissions deadlines are set up, I won't be able to get into the college I want until fall of NEXT YEAR, unless I file a complex appeal and they accept it (which is unlikely). So, basically, I have to wait a whole YEAR before I can attend school again. What am I going to DO with myself in the meantime? It's not like there's a bunch of jobs ripe for the picking these days. :/

Date: 2012-07-19 06:51 pm (UTC)1. Ask the counselor you're working with if it is possible for you to apply for provisional admission with the agreement that you will take and pass the required class in your first semester.
If the counselor says yes, you're good. If the counselor says no,
2. Write to the chair of the department you plan to major in at the college/university (or if you know a current student or recent graduate of the department ask them who is the most approachable faculty person in that department and write them instead). In your letter/email tell them how excited you are to attend and what your eventual plans are for your degree, and your surprise at realizing you don't have the requisite math class. Tell him/her you've inquired with (name of counselor), but s/he wasn't able to assist you. Then ask if *they* know anything that could be done to admit you provisionally with the understanding you'll take the math class the first semester.
Even better if before you do any of this you identify the qualifying math classes that will be offered in your first semester and mention them by course number when you ask.

Date: 2012-07-19 08:06 pm (UTC)Thank you. Unknown authority figures intimidate me, so that's not good. I'll do what I have to do, but that doesn't mean I won't panic about contacting people I don't know.

Date: 2012-07-19 05:46 pm (UTC)Ha you only think you keep vampires at bay with big stakes - its a story they created so that it would be easier for them to slip into the compound for a bite.
Anyway, oppressive Cpu fragging heat still lingering over Midwest. Lack of high powered air conditioning still prevents computer use. Kindle good for replies - not so good for writing. Not good for long posts.

Date: 2012-07-19 06:53 pm (UTC)Last night, I went to see the Fixing the Future (http://fixingthefuture.org/) documentary. It was pretty neat. I'm still trying to decide if time banking and alternative currencies and such are really good large-scale solutions (they seem kind of dependent on being small-scale, actually, but I do acknowledge that big solutions are often comprised of tiny things).
Today I commented on things and read home game entries and took a kitty to the vet (nothing serious - just a check up and shots) and I just realized that I kind of forgot to eat. Better do that soon. The play I'm going to tonight is getting great reviews - I wonder if it will be good enough to distract me from thinking about the Idol poll...

Date: 2012-07-19 07:02 pm (UTC)AND, we all know Gary votes for everyone, but on this tiebreaker, only one other person has voted for both people. That's pretty unusual as tiebreakers in this community go. I'm usually entertained by how many people bother to vote in a two-way poll and still vote for both people.
Also, it's clear the pimping has kicked in this week full force, because while the tiebreakers are usually the most popular polls, this time all but the last (scary turtle) poll have higher vote counts.
/ random poll analysis.

Date: 2012-07-19 07:09 pm (UTC)Counting me, it's less than 5. I just counted because I was all "how would she know that sort of thing?" before realizing the source of confusion.
You are discounting that people have - once again - been voting for them in fairly equal numbers.

Date: 2012-07-19 07:11 pm (UTC)Total of 80 votes. People who don't vote don't count as participants. Two more votes than people. Two minus Gary = one person.
Is my logic faulty?

Date: 2012-07-19 07:41 pm (UTC)It turns out that my logic failed at "People who don't vote aren't participants."
I have now independently tested that LJ polls will count someone as a participant even if they only click "submit" without choosing anyone.
Which screws my math on every poll.
Apparently we, of the bleachers, are not even able to do proper voting night analysis.
Sidelines suck.

Date: 2012-07-19 08:00 pm (UTC)How do I like my steaks?
Date: 2012-07-19 07:22 pm (UTC)Seriously -- I like 'em as red/bloody as possible yet still be "cooked". I've also had steak tartare several times, and always enjoyed it.
PS: being of Eastern European descent, I use garlic to keep the nosferatu at bay... which is why I always have "garlic-smashed" potatoes with my steak.

Date: 2012-07-19 07:56 pm (UTC)I have got to run for now and quit hiding at the computer, but I already warned everyone in advance that I am going to be holed up later tonight playing a rousing game of "frantically refresh the polls for that crazy online writing competition I signed up for back in October and won't ever shut the hell up about."
