How better to celebrate the life of one of the greatest civil rights leaders the world has ever seen then to wait for Gatekeeper votes to come in!!! He would truly be honored. :)

edit to add MOST of the Gatekeeper votes are in. I am still waiting on a few more. They have until 9 pm EST. Of course I will keep things open a little longer until I am finished with the official tally. Some people *like* to give me heart attacks by waiting until last minute... ;)

I thought that the country officially celebrated MLK a little ways back. Evidently I got my information wrong. XD

I am at work right now, as my company does not celebrate. ^^

The country does, but states have their own holidays and can conveniently place them on the same day as federal holidays! Neat, huh?

There are only rare times when I envy the US public holiday sched. This is one of them. I also like the President's day thing in February since we don't get anything then.

I guess since I have nearly 8 weeks of paid vacation I should stop whinging though.

They do. The states listed celebrate it as a joint holiday with MLK Day. Virgina did until 2001. When I was there in '99, someone brought up "MLK/REL Day" and told me that "it was that way across the country, it was the only way anyone would vote to have it".

I had to correct them. It might have been the only way *there*. . .

Here in VA, state employees have off the Friday before MLK day for Lee/Jackson Day.

So, state employees (like me) have a four-day weekend! :)

That's funny, that REL day is celebrated both north of us in VA and south of us, but not here in NC. I'm glad, I think I'd be pretty uncomfortable with that particular southernism...

We're settling back in at home. The kids are looking at their toys as if they've never seen them before (the beauty of babies), and I'm doing a ton of laundry. I have to go into work this afternoon, but just for a brief visit to prep for court in the morning. The kids are spending tonight at my parents' house, because I have to drive 50 miles to the courthouse in the morning, so Josh and I will actually get a night alone together (assuming HE doesn't get tied up at work too late). I'm defrosting some chicken for dinner tonight :)

So I have my fingers and toes crossed that I don't get eliminated this week. I'd like to have a happy evening if at all possible.

I visited Vicksburg this past break! During the war, the South capitulated with the North to end the seige of Vicksburg on the 4th of July. And then Vicksburg didn't celebrate Fourth of July for over a century and even then called it Confederate Carnival Day or something.

I didn't know about REL in Miss. I don't think it gets celebrated where my family lives.
