A few words from me:
[Poll #1356258]
[Poll #1356259]
A house divided.
Divided between two topics to be precise.
That is what we have here, and the reason that this poll exists - to determine who will advance and who has reached the end of their journey.
It has been an absolutely incredible journey so far, and it is showing all the signs of just getting better - as the writers themselves seem to be, pulling out some absolutely stunning work this week.
But loss is the nature of the beast, and we will be losing 2 contestants from each tribe, for a total of 4. Which means, when the poll closes and the results are formally announced, we will have reached our Top 15. Thinking back over the course of the season it seems unreal that we have actually reached this point, and yet - here we are, with further to travel.
So let's get to it.
As always (but apparently some folks did not know this) vote for your favorites, selecting as many of them in each poll as you like.
The poll will close on Saturday Feb 28th at 7pm EST. So read the entries and make sure that your favorites get to stay in it!! I've said it before, and I'm sure I will say it again, word of mouth is the best form of advertisement. If you see something you really enjoy, and want to see more of it, make sure other people go to read it too! (and as always, comment on the entries! Feedback is always a good thing. Also - don't forget to tip your waitress!)
Good luck to everyone!

Date: 2009-03-01 01:01 am (UTC)My statement was that I didn't win based on popularity, which is true. I didn't have many friends throughout the competition. Popularity didn't win me the competition, the competition made me popular based on my writing. People heard of my writings, they read them, they liked them, they voted for me. They weren't on my friends list at the time, many of them were friends of others in the competition and voted for me even when their own friends were voted out because they enjoyed what I wrote every week. The friends came to me after the competition was over because they chose to stay and continue to read what I write.
And I stated that there is an element of popularity in the competition as there is in pretty much anything. If you enjoy a particular author's work you're going to continue to buy his/her books. However, if that same author writes two or three books that are not to your taste you're going to quit buying. That's the element of popularity versus being a good writer.
Sounds to me like we're arguing semantics. With your argument you could state that anything is a popularity contest.

Date: 2009-03-01 01:33 am (UTC)Look around in this community, and tell me what you see? It isn't about good writing. There is suddenly drama, there are disappointed people, there are people still in the competition who are pimping their stuff like crazy in order to get votes.
It isn't about the writing at this point. Read what's going on right now and tell me that I'm wrong...

Date: 2009-03-01 02:18 am (UTC)In any online community you are going to experience moments of chaos, especially in a community of this size. And THIS has absolutely no bearing in this conversation. You're argument is that it's a popularity contest, not whether or not people argue in the community. That's a moot point.
This community is absolutely about the writing and thus far you've offered no proof to the contrary.
May I ask? Why, if you detest this community so much and your friend is no longer a part of it are you still here if this is just, in your opinion, a popularity contest that no longer interests you?

Date: 2009-03-01 03:02 am (UTC)I don't come to you with flawed points (really, this is quite insulting), I'm telling you that this community does not reward good writers. Having won whatever episode here, you are obviously going to disagree with me because apparently you are a brilliant writer now. Stick that in your next query letter and see where it gets you. I can tell you, but I'd rather you experience it first-hand.
"May I ask? Why, if you detest this community so much and your friend is no longer a part of it are you still here if this is just, in your opinion, a popularity contest that no longer interests you?"
Again, I have to ask you if you bothered to read my initial comment or if you're simply reacting defensively as if I've somehow attacked you. I stuck it out here hoping that I would be proven wrong. Unfortunately, I wasn't. Upon viewing the opinion of the community voice in here, I gave my opinion. I didn't slam the community in my own journal (and if I had, trust me, 99% would have agreed with me). I didn't slam it here, either.
You're telling me that entertainers are popular. And I'm telling you that popular people are entertaining. Writing is something completely different. But of course, you're such an awesome writer, you already know this. At least, that would have been my presumption.
I read a bit of your journal. When was the last time that you wrote something that wasn't related to LJ-Idol? Something worthwhile? Something that would be stellar?
