I just finished The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith, who is, in case you missed it - JK Rowling.
The whole of 'Merica recently went through a reread of the Harry Potter series, and after seeing some comments slamming Rowling, I thought "I should check out her other stuff". So I read The Casual Vacancy" and then this book.
I'm not sure if I would have thought about it without seeing some of the comments, but it seemed like Rowling heard people complaining about the lack of sex in the Harry Potter books (you know, the children's series) and decided to put it all in her next book. ;)
I liked it, but it didn't grab me the way the Potter books did, I'll confess though, I fell right into The Cuckoo's Calling and stayed there. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a detective story, but I really ended up enjoying it, and I'm looking forward to the next one.
Which brings me around to what I was thinking about a little bit ago - what do you think people expect of your writing? Have you ever gone out of your way to "show them" something that they assumed you "couldn't do"? Is there something you assumed that you couldn't do, and as the years went on, you realized that you could?
And of course - what are YOU reading this weekend?
(I know you are reading the entries, as they come in, for Week 2: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/718214.html - and writing your own - but what else??)
