I don't game.

Other than LJ Idol of course.

I've been known to watch people play video games and be perfectly happy. I'm just not very good at them.

I enjoy playing Galaga. But I'm not very good at it. The same goes for skee ball, but that's not really the same "sort of game" we're talking about. :) (I'm "OK" at both, but I keep getting reminders that my skill set may be lacking these days, whenever it is that I do play)

There is one game though that I used to really love playing. If you'd asked me a couple weeks ago, I probably couldn't have told you. Because I'd forgotten. But thanks to an app on my phone, I have rediscovered the obsession of SimCity.

I am currently trying to manage between a traffic crisis and a lack of police in several, spread out, areas. (I *just* got the trash/sewage back under control and I'm good for power and water for at least a little bit)

It's only been two days of playing - but I'm already back into the thick of my obsession. (and yes, I'm sure there are "cheat codes" out there - and I know they have in-game purchases but I have an in-wallet vacuum and even if I didn't, I'm quite sure I don't want to go down that particular black hole)

The only game I ever played with "cheat codes" was the PC-version of Civilization? Why? Because I loved nuking small towns and villages. Or rolling over primitive civilizations with tanks. Yes, I am truly the white cis-male people have warned you about. :D (at least in that particular game)

Other games that I used to enjoy - Star Trek Engineering (it was some Star Trek game, but I played with two friends - one would take the controls for the away missions, one handled the space battles and I kept the ship going and supplied in the engineering department - and no, I didn't get "stuck with it" either, that was my choice...), Super Traitor (Not sure what the game actually was, some sort of Desert Storm mission game. It became Super Traitor because I would shoot up my own guys, hospitals, media trucks, etc...); and of course, Super Space Traitor (See above, but it was a space game where I'd turn around and try to blow up my own base) I was obviously a troubled teen!

With SimCity though - and this is definitely as true, if not more so, brings out my compassion of wanting to help my citizens. I take all of the compassion that I should feel for Idolers and give it to little dots on my phone! :D

this is so relevant to my life rn.

I used to play Kingdom Hearts on ps2 and Legend of Zelda on the old school gameboy and both of those belonged to my sister.

I was wishing I had my own gaming system recently.

But I still play pc games sometimes and the other night I found a glitch in a game in which attacks during a certain quest weren't affecting me if I just stood there and beat out the clock,so I did it like 8 times and I made like a few  thousand coins. I felt super guilty about it the whole time but also having a lack of real life funds means I can't buy enough of whatever to level up or buy my charachter new equipment.

I have known hardcore gamers and I wonder just how much they budget it into their lifestyle.

I would have invested in the Fallen London/Echo Bazaar series long ago if I wasn't afraid of "falling into the black hole"

Fallen London! I'm still playing that, though with more sanity these days. There was a point that as long as I was in front of a computer I would go poke at it every hour when my hand of opportunity cards had refilled. I do not miss those days.

Now the only thing I'm really doing is saving up for the Heptagoat. It's a long way in the future unless I sell things I don' t want to sell (at which point would still be in the future, just not so distant).

I gave them a little money for fate, not because I felt that having a fancy item or whatever was worth actual money, but because I felt I'd gotten enough enjoyment from their free game that I at least owed them $10.

I recently revived my SimCity Buildit game. I stopped playing because I kept getting cash. Bad!

I like keeping my citizens happy. 98% makes me happy, but where my compassion comes out is when I am trading and I land on a tiny city of under 100,000 citizens. I feel sorry for the mayors and buy something whether I need it or not. If they're really tiny and are under 50k I'll buy everything they have on trade. Between SimCity and Minecraft time gets lost, or I get lost in time...or something.

I've played Sim City a few times but I never got hardcore into it. I actually prefer Township because it doesn't deal with the utilities, LOL. I always quit playing when it gets to the point where you have to spend actual money to get to the next level. I won't spend real money on any online/PC game.

I've always been an Angry Birds fangirl but the latest versions of some of their games seem very dumbed down.

Hint: The mistake I made the last time I played it was not building skyscrapers. I didn't want to ruin the charm of my rather small-town town :) But yeah, the utilities in Sim City is what usually kills it for me.

I am mostly a tabletop gamer, and play board games 2-3 nights a week. Ginkgopolis, Tzolk'in, Zhanguo, Rococo, Eminent Domain, Dominion, and Ad Astra are my current favorites. Just played Terraforming Mars for the first time last night, and really enjoyed that. I play Magic the Gathering, but pretty much only each time a new set comes out. Wish I had an outlet to play casual games of Magic at other times of the year, but none of my friends play anymore and there's no store with casual gamers close enough to be worth visiting regularly.
I have no interest in the vast majority of video games, but I do play a few browser games (such as Fallen London, mentioned earlier in the room). The big one there for me is Card Hunter. I love Card Hunter.
The idea behind Card Hunter is that you are playing a computer version of an old tabletop miniatures game (which never actually existed) in which the items you equip for your characters form decks of cards you draw from during the game. The graphics are designed so that your characters and the monsters you fight look like little cardboard cutouts with plastic bases running around on a paper map. There are pictures of dice or card boxes or snacks or whatever off to the side of the map. It is adorable.

I am still heavily into Pokemon Go, ever since it became available in Germany last July.

Funny thing is, I had never been interested in anything Pokemon before, but I thought the game looked cute and could be a motivation to get out more.

The latter has proved to be true, and here I am, still hooked :)

I tried that SimCity Build It game and just couldn't get into it. I loved the original game a hundred years ago.

I've played too many games to admit to publicly, but my favorite game currently is Ramsay Dash, which I've played for nearly a year without spending any money on it.

I also very much like Nonograms Katana, but it's really only for people who find math relaxing. Or cross stitchers who are used to figuring out where they've gotten off-pattern. :)

Re: Galaga

The biggest secret to the game is in the first board.

Stage I..

The idea is to destroy the entire squadron EXCEPT the two far left attackers in the first (or lowest) row. Make sure you do not touch those lower two at any point. It can be difficult to keep track but if either one of those lower left attackers get destroyed, this won't work.

Then you have to wait.

Those two attackers will go into a freefall pattern, shooting one or two shots at you. Let that happen and let them shoot. Simply avoid the shots.

It may take about 15-20 minutes, but eventually, as those last two attackers continue to fall, they will stop shooting. Then, attack and destroy them.

The result? No attackers will fire any shots at you for the remainder of the game!

That means that the only way you can be destroyed is if an attacker crashes into you, kamikaze style, or if you were captured with a tractor beam and that was your final ship.

NOTE: this trick works on both the standard arcade table version of the game AND on the "NAMCO Museum" gameboy advance version.
