Green Room - Week 8 - Day 8
Feb. 13th, 2017 09:05 amThis morning I woke up with one of those weird thoughts of "If LJ ever went away/if we decided to move Idol somewhere else, I could keep the name and just make the LJ stand for something other than 'Live Journal'!"
My favorite, in this daze was Literary Jihad! :)
So I went to see if this was a thing - and it kind of is... http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/06/08/battle-lines-jihad-creswell-and-haykel
Jihadists LOVE poetry. Who else do we know who seems to love poetry? Seaaon 10 LJ Idol contestants... Coincidence????

See for yourself what "those people" are up to (and by "those people" I mean "current contestants" and by "current contestants" I mean hippies in the need of a good kicking. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/979718.html

Date: 2017-02-14 05:30 am (UTC)For the longest time, I liked to refer to weddings as wettings, because at my sister's wedding our cousins changed the letters around on one of the hotel directories to make it a "Wetting." Plus it was an outdoor wedding in late summer in Orlando and we were dodging storms and watching Monsoon Wedding and wetting was thematic (the sun was gorgeous on the gardens for the anointed hours, luckily, allowing all this to be fun today).
Wishing you good weather and great memories!
Happy Wedding Day!

Date: 2017-02-14 08:31 am (UTC)Jihads are almost entirely internal. They can be a combination of external and internal, like the film about LGBT Muslims called A Jihad For Love which is about the personal jihad of reconciling their orientation with their faith and cultural traditions, and also the fight to be accepted by everybody else. An example of a totally external military jihad could be that if you're in an oppressive country and being Muslim is illegal and Muslims are violently oppressed, and all peaceful methods had failed, a military jihad would be allowed to help the Muslims practice their faith and secure their human rights. (This is roughly what the jihadists seem to think they're doing.) This happened in Islam's early days and was called "the minor jihad" by the Prophet, reminding them that once their freedom was secured they were returning to the "major jihad" - the personal struggle of praying every day and performing religious obligations, of avoiding lying and cruelty and selfishness. Even the Prophet warned against using this term as a synonym for holy war.
I think a good example of a literary jihad (though not for Islamic reasons) is when Anthony Burgess wrote A Clockwork Orange trying to find sympathy for the drunk youths who beat his wife until she miscarried. I think if anything you write is personal to you and a benefit to you as a person it can be a literary jihad.
Also, happy wedding!
