Green Room - Week 6 - Day 2

One of my most recent public LJ posts was from 8 years ago, when I talked about my hopes for the Obama Presidency.

I thought he could bring people together (by not being Clinton or an "established Democrat") and I *extremely* naively thought that the race issue would actually work in his favor by giving him a greater grace period because "who would want to risk being called a racist".

In addition - I thought the idea of using the Republicans own health care proposal from the 90s and the personal responsibility-based mandate that their own nominee had ran on was a great way of reaching across the aisle and would be an early win for the administration. Because: Why would anyone NOT support something they were all in on a few years before?

*laughs and points at younger self*

I say this on the day Obama leaves office for a couple of reasons:

- Obama made me happy at some points and upset me other times. Ultimately, I think history will judge him favorably. But I think it's too soon for that verdict. *I* liked him though and think he will be a really good "ex-President". (although no "ex President" is as good as Carter, that guy is just a decent human being. Maybe too good of a person for the White House)

- To point out that I don't really make a lot of public LJ posts. Or a lot of posts in my personal journal at all actually.

- As a way of saying "I'm really bad at predicting how these things are going to go". If all my hopes for Obama weren't realized, maybe all my fears for the incoming Trump administration won't be either.

Not saying that the people who are worried shouldn't be, or that those with concerns shouldn't be working their asses off to address them and hold the incoming administration accountable. Absolutely you should be doing everything you feel you need to do. I'm just trying to sleep at night. If this motivates you to become a more active and engaged citizen, and/or to continue to fight "the good fight" then at least one good thing will be happening.

There is also the old standby of how times of conservative gain are times are often great times for writers, artists and musicians. So I hope that holds true as well. Because regardless of my personal politics, or yours, I think everyone can agree that more creativity is always a good thing.

I will share the same information here that I shared on my Facebook post, so that you can ignore it like my Facebook friends are. If you feel strongly about an issue, please speak out to your congressional representative. You would be surprised how effective that can be. Some tips: be polite, be specific about your concerns, and ask for a specific action, like supporting a proposal or voting against a bill. Here is a link to find the contact information for your Representatives.

The most effective action is to call. Next effective is to write letters or emails. Facebook or Twitter are less effective, although they may be more effective for the president-elect!

I wasn't going to watch the inauguration today, I am just sick over the whole thing. But, after hearing that Trump wrote his own speech, I want to watch and see if he goes down in flames or perhaps rises to the occasion. And, I am curious to see the live public response to this "most contested" election. Should make for interesting t.v.

Which is the problem though right?

Electing someone whose accomplishments amount to "entertaining" media outbursts and public "scandal" is why this is such a scary moment in history, a grand social experiment that could lead to so much bad.

Don't get it twisted, I'm also morbidly curious what the sleezeball will have to say and how much of a fool he will make of himself, it's like seeing a car wreck you can't help but look, but I don't want to give him "the ratings" either and I shouldn't be thinking of this patriotic moment that way. This is not a "reality" tv show this is real reality and the political stage is not a place to air petty grievences or belittle other nations.

I just hope he is going to take the position seriously and realize that Obama will be remebered as a classy mofo if nothing else, especially now in direct contrast to the buffon that is following him, who is not mypresident but is about to become one of the most powerful people on the planet despite his complete lack of any actual qualifications.

I know you don't know me, so I am not "twisted" by your comment.

But, you also don't realize how horrified I am by both Trump and horrified by the fact I live in a country where THAT many people thought electing a narcissistic, uneducated monster was suddenly a good idea. So, I apologize that my quick post about the inauguration got you "twisted" enough to think I consider our political process akin to a reality show.

Until now, I wouldn't have missed an inauguration. I think the peaceful transfer of power is an important part of our system, an important event to partake in, so for me to have been so horrified I considered NOT participating was a big deal. I didn't go into so much detail in my post though.

I do not believe Trump cares one iota about this country, save as far as he thinks it can serve his desires.That leaves us all in a terrifying position.

I'm sorry my use of slang confused you, it means that I am agreeing with you but feel that I would still be a hypocrite to "hate watch" it.

Which for the record I didn't and have never really payed that much attention to any inauguration ever.

I still stand by all the things I said but don't get it twisted: it was in no way a personal attack on you and I agree with everything you said above as well.

I didn't!! because I have been on a family camping trip all weekend but my instagram feed the last two days has been nothing but pictures of the awesome women I know all over the country braving the weather to be in solidarity. Restored some of my faith in humanity for sure and made wish I could have been there too.

omigosh! I'm feeling like I'm going to have go ahead and watch a bunch of youtube vids of the inauguration for all of the reaction shots.

But I will resist doing it tonight because I seriously have to go to sleep now, it's 1am were I am! and we're getting up early to break down camp. I still have to edit my entry for this week on the road and hope I get to a wifi signal in time to post it!

I spent my day binge watching Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix. I enjoyed it a lot and look forward to a second season. Knowing that Lemony (Daniel) himself is part of this adaptation makes it so much better.
