A few words from clauderainsrm:

I love LJ Idol.

It’s not just something I do to pass the time. It’s a passion for me. That’s what keeps me coming back week after week, season after season.

I hope that that love can translate through the series of tubes that make up the intrawebz and infect the rest of you as well.

Because what is happening here is something special, and I hope you are able to see that.

I also have fears though, fears that things won’t go well. Fears that this thing withering and dying.

Why am I mentioning this? Because the topic this week is “Fear is the Heart of Love” and I just mentioned “fear” and “love”, as well as tying it to LJ Idol, which owns a piece of my heart!

Now is the time that you get to take that piece of my heart and decide what is going to happen to it for a week.

It’s voting time, which means that everyone can come in and decide what is going to happen next. Use that power wisely.

Before we get to that though, we have the sad news of the people who have “byed-out”/missed the deadline without having a bye left. There are some newbies, but also some Idol favorites.

It's probably the smallest ratio. I almost put them back into two intact tribes. But I figured I'd leave it be this round.

The "bye-outs" are still big, but not as big as they could be - there are definitely people fighting to stay in!

For a season of this size, yes, it's big.

I DO think however that "OMG look at all the byes/bye-outs" isn't a particularly helpful conversation. Not sure what is to be gained by it other than making me (and other people) feel shitty and not want to bother. (not that I think it's anyone's actual goal. I think people just comment on things like that)

I'd rather look at the positive of "look at how many people DO show up each week!" THAT is going to focus on the talent that is here and what they are accomplishing.

*hugs* I would never attempt to make you or anyone else feel badly about something like this. I hope I didn't come across with that intention. I was more asking about past "averages" and how this season compares.

I agree completely - we need more discussion in the GRs (I don't go to the Work Rooms so can't speak to that) about how much fun Idol is and how wonderful it is for writing chops and meeting other writers and challenging ourselves as writers!

And we keep writing. It was a tough topic for me to write this week. I had plenty of ideas, but actually getting it down in a way I thought was good was difficult.

As I'm a newbie and have nothing to compare it to, I can't be sure, but it seems like a lot of people are bye-ing out. Is this normal?

It's relatively high. I think people took byes sooner than they "should" have and are now struggling. From the newbies, I think there is a high number of "wandering off" after the holiday break. For the veterans? That seems to be case-by-case (from the ones I've talked to). People just seem *really* preoccupied right now.

As I said up-thread though, I hope we don't lose sight of how many people *haven't* byed-out, and how many are still fighting every week to get things in, and what is actually being created!

ETA: Though part of me wishes I could move on through the rounds on my own accord, rather than doing it possibly because someone had to drop out due to Real Life getting in the way.

You are getting through each round up against everyone else that showed up for the round. If you are surviving, it's for a good reason.

(and with the byes, it's never the exact same field either, so you are holding your own!)

While winning would be nice, the best thing about Idol for me is that I write well under deadline. I want it to go on foreeeeever!

Oh, absolutely. I'm in this mostly for the socializing and getting better not only at writing but at writing under a deadline.

Though I'm of course not saying that winning wouldn't be nice. ;)

I don't think people bye-ing out says anything about the quality of this competition. LJIdol is awesome.

The season started at a rough time of year though, at the end of a rough year in itself, and I think you are right that folks just didn't ration their byes very well.
