Green Room - Week 3 - Weekend Edition

The Phantom Menace is on TV right now. Specifically, it's on my TV.

I've got to say, I may have given it too much credit at the time. I remember all the naysayers and thinking while it had flaws, that it was still entertaining. At least at the parts that we've seen so far, I've got to say that those people had some decent points.

Has that happened with you? What was it that just lost it's sheen with the passage of time, or maybe something that gained it?

the first fandomy thing that comes to mind is the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series

I loved it in high school but can't go back and watch it now without all the problematic (rape-y) themes and general awfulness ruining the nostalgia.

I know. I hear your gasps. When I was a kid, I loved this movie. I even thought my family was the only one who watched it.

Now, I can't watch it. It drives me crazy.

I would say that most of the television I was exposed to in my youth falls into the category of stuff that definitely didn't age well. This includes most of the canon of Hanna-Barbera cartoons, most of the canon of Sid & Marty Krofft programming, Shows like "The Monkees" and "The Partridge Family" and "The Brady Bunch" could have been a whole lot better with better writers.

In fact, if "Ally McBeal" were still on the air, maybe I could have asked the firm of Cage & Fish to bring a case against the networks for providing low grade quality programs which were not inspirational in any way, certainly not like the vast and wonderful array of shows between traditional broadcast, basic cable, and premium and subscription services that air nowadays... and did not provide fodder for a young and looking for direction writer kid.

I've never felt that with the prequels. For me, it's mostly been the opposite where I've grown to love it even more. (And I was obsessed when I first saw Star Wars.) I understand that it has flaws, but so does the original trilogy. But I will defend the PT with my last breath.

The PT was my first foray into fandom, so part of it is nostalgia, but a lot of it is also that I really do think it's great. Revenge of the Sith is my favorite of the movies, with Phantom Menace and Empire Strikes Back tied at second.

Sherlock BBC has been the one that's lost it's sheen. I don't appreciate how the writers treat the characters, especially how Moffat treats the women. Plus other stuff that's too long for a comment.

Oh geez, TPM and AotC exist for one reason and one reason only. Rifftrax.

Okay, I lied. TPM also exists for the Weird Al song, but that's it.

TPM had a ton of potential, but holy fucking hell the pacing issues. It was excellent for costuming and world-building, admittedly, as was AotC, but AotC was just an epic train wreck six ways to Sunday. It had some hella gorgeous fight scenes, NGL, but ye gods that romantic dialogue was just like - who the fuck let George Lucas hire a 12-year-old fanfic author to ghostwrite Anakin and Padme's lines? B\c that's really the only logical explanation I can come up with for those shenanigans.

RotS is weird. In an of itself, it's just sort of "the least bad of the prequels", but taken in conjunction with The Clone Wars cartoon series (the CGI ones, not the super short hand animated things), it suddenly makes a fuckload more sense. But it's also kind of a problem that it took six seasons of a TV show to provide enough context for the movie to not be completely absurd.

Honestly, I think episodes I and II should have been combined into one movie, and we should have had a lot of the stuff that got covered in TCW get covered in the second movie. Then Ep III would have made a lot more sense. That being said, I'm kind of glad it didn't happen, because then TCW might not have happened, and that would have been a tragedy. Because Dave Filoni whups the shit out of George Lucas as a story teller. (Also, while I'm setting myself up to get flamed - Disney needs to go eat an entire bag of rancid Gungan dicks for not letting TCW finish its run. And don't say "But Rebels..." because Rebels is totally inferior rubbish by comparison. Yes, I know that's Filoni too, and it's still better than the prequels, especially the first two, but whatever.)
