Green Room - Week 1 - Thanksgiving Day
Nov. 24th, 2016 10:17 amHappy Thanksgiving!
The real one. Not the fake Canadian one. The one that is celebrated in 'Merica! Like in Standing Rock. I'm sure they are gathering together today for a nice meal. Right?
(Seriously, I hope someone is doing something nice for those folks today. Even if that "nice" is "not spraying with firehoses". That would be a nice change of pace)
Thanks Gary, way to bring the holiday down...

Speaking of bringing the holiday down - there is a poll up right now: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/953518.html So make sure you get over there and read, comment and vote for your favorites!
You can vote for as many as you want to support - so spread the love! (and pass word along for others to do the same. That's how we get new readers for your work, by word of mouth)
***
What awkward conversations/moments around the dinner table are you looking forward to today?
We ended up having to change our plans at last minute due to the original host being sick (who doesn't usually do it, but she wanted to have dinner over at her house due to her thinking this was likely her Mom's last Thanksgiving. Given that the Hospice nurse is now staying with them, she was right to think that) But the change actually worked out for the best. This is going to be *a lot* better for us, and far less of a chance for explosions. (due to someone who is known for trying to start fights, because he thinks it's funny, not being a part of those new plans)

Date: 2016-11-24 03:25 pm (UTC)I'm avoiding any stress today. Bruno and I spend Turkey day separately because I don't go to his family's when his evil sister is there. There is a long story behind it which I won't bore you with but I refuse to spend one minute in the same room with her and would rather eat a peanut butter sandwich than go to dinner where she is around. But fortunately peanut butter is not on the menu. My friend and her daughter are coming for dinner and we have a feast and movies to watch. So it'll be a great day! So no fights. And an added bonus is that I got to sleep in this morning!
Have a great day all!

Date: 2016-11-24 03:26 pm (UTC)But I am thankful that I am off Thanksgiving. I am so grateful to work at a place that actually closes on the big holidays, even if we are technically retail. Thank god.

Date: 2016-11-24 03:35 pm (UTC)I am trying not to be livid right now.
Every year we get our pumpnickel boule (aka round loaf) from a convenience store up the road which does its own baking. I went in there the other day to place an order for one. I was told not to worry, there'd be plenty, just get here before 11AM when the deli closes. No order. OK, fine.
I go in there and the kid behind the counter has absolutely NO FREAKING IDEA what I'm talking about. No I don't want Portuguese rolls. No, I don't want a round Italian loaf. No, I don't want XYZ. PUM-PER-NICK-EL.
"Oh," he says, "we discontinued that."
"Nobody told me the other day," I replied.
"Oh, they should've."
So I've now spent close to an hour driving around to the area bakeries still open...NOBODY has them. NOBODY.
"But Kiz," you may ask, "why didn't you get one at your work? You're a BAKER!"
Because New Current Employer doesn't carry them, that's why. And now I have a container of yummy spinach dip and nothing to pair it with. And no, crackers won't work. Please don't suggest them.

Date: 2016-11-24 03:49 pm (UTC)I spent a good part of last night clearing out my inbox. That's my email inbox. Oh, and unsubbing from a handful of the millions of stuff I have subscribed to over the years. Now, I will have room for all the Idol email, and I can start readingin earnest.
Enjoy you day, guys!
(I get brownie points for not rising to Gary's bait, right? Brownies? Chocolate cookies?) Winks

Date: 2016-11-24 03:51 pm (UTC)I am, oddly enough, thankful that I am sick with a chest cold and am not going to the family dinner where I would have to listen to them whining and trumpeting (another politically divided California family) while I spent my time coughing and sneezing all over them.
.
I am even more thankful that my step-cousin SK (yes, part of the ambivalence is we are a "blended" family [I am also thankful we have worked it out so well for the past thirty-nine {my dear heaven has it been that long?} years] yes) came by yesterday after sunset with a bag full of goodies I can fix for Mom and me (my mother [96 and extraordinarily healthy] does not want to go and finds me to be a convenient excuse, even now refusing other offers of rides) tonight, yes, a piece of already cooked turkey breast, some pumpkin soup, mashed potato mix, frozen veggies, stuffing mix, etc., etcet., etcetera.
.
I am also thankful I have a family.
.
I am also thankful and prayerful for all those who do not have merely a simple cold/flu to worry about -- but much more to stay on guard for -- our men and women under arms in foreign lands (oh the burden of empire) and the children and women and men suffering war and being remembered only when someone googles "What is a Leppo?"
.
I am thankful for this community of diverse and talented writers. Like so much else in my life, I do not deserve. But then, grace is not deserved. It is given.
.
Amen

Date: 2016-11-25 04:17 am (UTC)My friend's kindergarten aged son had a creative writing assignment titled If I Were a Turkey with a turkey picture to color.
He wrote:
If I were a turkey, I would be dead. I would be eaten. I would be gone.
(Pretttt sure this was not the teacher's intent)

Date: 2016-11-24 04:15 pm (UTC)Perhaps the Great and Powerful Gary would consider granting everyone a third bye, thereby displaying his wisdom and compassion, since so many first week byes must be due to a confluence of bad things, such as late entrants, Thanksgiving, or just plain bad karma.
no subject
Date: 2016-11-24 04:25 pm (UTC)That being said, let this post serve as a "Notice of Intent" that I still plan on writing the piece I came up with last night as a Home Game entry. If nothing else, the practice will help me "limber up" for next week...

Date: 2016-11-24 04:28 pm (UTC)I've had such a shitty month (actually the past three months have been quite shitty), but I'm trying to focus on the positive today. We're having dinner my husband and me (our first Thanksgiving married!), my sister's family and a few friends. My bro-in-law's mom, who always manages to start drama every time she visits, was supposed to come but canceled at the last minute, so I'm thankful it's just people I love and adore who will be there, and who are primarily drama-free.
Tomorrow I fly to New York for work (not thankful for that, but thankful I have a job), so it's going to be a bit tricky to read entries this week. If I don't read all of them, I apologize in advance, and I will do better in future weeks when I'm not working 14-hour days.
Ummm, I'm not sure this was as positive as I wanted it to be, but I hope everyone has a wonderful day, whether it's Thanksgiving for you or just Thursday!

Date: 2016-11-24 05:17 pm (UTC)My turkey has been brining since yesterday, all the groceries are bought... Now to just get out of bed and cook, ha! I seriously slept till 11 and it was delicious.
It's just us four today and I am thankful for that. For a no-stress cook-fest with my kids, for my husband to help wash dishes later and my silly little dog to lick the plates.
2016 has been rough in many ways - I feel older in my soul after this one, which is sad. But there is still so much to be grateful for.
After the cooking is done, and the eating and finding a place for all those leftovers in an already crowded fridge, it will just be us again, and that is truly a blessing.
