We normally don't go out on New Years' Eve - too many tipsy drivers and roaring drunk young NAVY boys keep me off the roads. HOWEVER, our good friend is celebrating his NAVY retirement after 20 years in and December 31 is his last day!!

I'll drive out for THAT party. :)

The Last Day of the Year is for me usually getting ready for the FIRST DAY of the year. So cleaning up a few messes, visiting a local book store, taking overdue books to the library, and cleaning out the cat box.

I am also returning books to the library, cleaning a bathroom, and considering going to a few second hand stores, if I can confirm they are "relatively" metro accessible.

In addition to the dry cleaners, a basketball game, and perhaps a trip to Costco (train+walking, not driving).

It is estimated that the competition can go as long as six months (that about right Gary)?

He has compared it to a marathon, rather than a sprint, to the finish.

In my opinion, a (potential) participant has to like, or at least be comfortable with

a) uncertainty (like topics, deadlines, vote organization)
b) writing and reading
c) social participation at some level (AKA "The Green Room")
d) a minimum time committement (for writing, for reading, for following important GR threads).

This season the concept of a "bye" was added so that people who could not get their entries in on time could be skipped for a week.

Mostly, if you know you are going to be away from a machine for specific times, you can talk to our host Gary about alternative means for submitting an entry. [Phone post, e-mail post, hand written and scanned even].

Forgot to add: speculation about the teasers that Gary puts out for how the future vote might change is part of the socializing stuff. I can't speak for him, but I would be incredibly surprised if he ever pulled a head-to-head competition if he knew one of the participants would be a distinct disadvantages because of life outside Idol.

That is my impression of him as a person, and not as a game player.

I'll likely go see a movie all by myself, which is something I love to do. I might stop off at a music store to drool over drum sets, but the actual purchase has to wait a few months until I find a place to live that is big enough to take a drum set. And much later, I'll get myself dolled up for a party tonight and a mighty amount of drinking. In other words, 2007 ends with me doing whatever the hell I want.

It's NYE... We're going to the grocery store now, then waiting around for the new guest room mattress to arrive... then off to our friend Butchie's for NYE. Eatin sauerkraut, kielbasa, hot dogs, and birthday cake. (It's Butchie's birthday.)

For all of you western PA folk here, you know we're getting the cake at Giant Eagle. There is nothing better. *g* You know you're jealous.

I am very excited for this year to be over! Woooo

My boyfriend has to bartend until eight tonight. Then we are going to ignore all the party invites and cook dinner together and drink champagne while we probably watch Family Guy and The Office and Lost. Those seem to be the most commonly pulled out dvds. I'm more excited for this than I've been for any New Year's Eve I've had so far! I already started the potatoes. They will be good. They're called whipped cream potatoes.

We're visiting our usual New Year's friends.

Last night I spent much time playing "guitar" on an XBox 360. Never done that before--also did singing when the "band" was playing. Amusingly, actually knowing how to play the guitar didn't help much. Actually knowing how to sing did.

Today is mostly lazing around and probably a hike. Possibly fixing a light fixture.

Later is party time--luckily I don't have to go anywhere for that. Or rather come back from that. :)

If the weather holds we'll probably have a bonfire. I'll try not to fall into it.

I'm not sure whether to count this as morning or night - I pulled an all-nighter to get the finances finishedl I'm starting the year with one clean slate, and I'm happy with that. :)

And, since we've no plans for tomorrow, I'm not planning to nap before sleeping tonight. I'm going to tidy the house is a relatively low-energy* fashion, getting ready for our relatively low-energy party.

Heh, I fooled them all into coming here, so I don't have to leave the house! Mwah-ha-ha!

*Low-energy meaning that whenever I feel as if I need a break, I sit down and catch up on LJ, just preserving my other clean slate going into the new year. :)

I've got a load of laundry going right now, and once I stick that in the dryer (in a few minutes) then I'm off to go visit my cat, Tigger, at the vet's office, where he's been since Thursday. Hopefully, they'll have the results of the ultrasound when I get there, since the doctor was supposed to be in around 1:45-2:00.

Then I'll come home, make some appetizer dish to bring over to minikin's tonight for our sedate NYE movie-watching party with family and friends, then come home and sleep while my hubby goes off to work (3rd shift, yay) around 1am. Whee!

So far it has been laundry *sniff*, dishes *sniff*, change cat litter *sniff sniff*, and tidy up *sniff*. Oh, did I mention I have a cold that requires I stop whatever I'm doing and blow my nose every few minutes?

No plans for tonight. My wife is out of town and I don't think she'll be up at midnight since she has to catch an early flight (plus she's in a different time zone), so I guess I'll be going to bed early... at least my new year won't start with a hangover. :)

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go blow my nose before I start dripping on the keyboard. ;P
