I had a lot to talk about today, but I've temporarily forgotten all of it! :)

OH! I have the first 12 potential topics for Season 10!! That's exciting! (Granted, about half of them were from the "not used" pile from Seasons 6-8. But I really like the new ones. It's still a way off, but I like what I have so far)

That's just one thing I was going to say. If I remember more as I go, I'll insert them. If not, as I said before - it'll be in the comments. :)

It's been an interesting week work wise. There was a water main break that shut us down early on Monday. They ordered porta potties, but as soon as they realized they wouldn't be in on time, they let us go. Or rather, they told us to leave and OUR bosses mentioned it us two hours after that decision. ;)

Yesterday, it was announced at 9 am that the building was shutting down. They told us at 11:30 that we were leaving at noon.

After making an 2 hour bus ride into work (my ride is about 2 hours and 15 minutes) I got a call telling me the office was closed and to turn around. I was in a "bad neighborhood" at the time, so I waited until I got to the bus depot (also in a bad neighborhood, but there are more people around) a few minutes later to hop off the bus and wait for the next one. (Plus - more options on what bus to take home)

When the bus was in sight, I got a phone call to come in!

The water main is still busted - so no running water/no restrooms. There have been talks that we will find out "in two hours" what is happening today. Which means we will find out a few hours after that. :)

It hearkens back to the days where Idol was primarily nonfiction. Fiction was an unspoken no-no the first few seasons because it wasn't considered "the real you".

Yeah, there was definitely a bent toward "giving us a piece of YOU" in the first 2 seasons that was still in the air when the people who are the "old timers" now showed up. :D

The downside was a lot of accusations of people using their "stories of woe" for votes.

I used to judge high school speech contests. One of the categories was "Dramatic Interpretation." The running joke among the kids and coaches was that if you did something from, say, "Hamlet" you'd be doomed no matter how well you performed it, but you could make finals if you did a monologue whose content was "my mother was killed by a vacuum cleaner" and worked up a few tears.

So, yeah, speech judges tended to like stories that show some sort of personal pain as opposed to well performed and well written dramatic work. Its a conundrum.

We had a girl perform "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" once. My favorite piece of feedback she received was "you really took this challenging poem and made it feel vibrant and alive. One of the strongest performances I've ever seen in competition. I wish you'd chosen an easier piece, though." That judge ranked her 4 out of 5 based on "inappropriate piece."

Prufrock is my favorite - I learned it for part of my undergraduate thesis project! I still know big chunks. My favorite is

I think that's one of the saddest lines ever written...

IIRC, during a call for topics, I even submitted a "Please, for ****'s sake, tell me something positive" during Season 03.

Fiction started showing up as early as Season 3.

But it was rare.

I wasn't here in Season 3, but I remember Spydie writing fiction in season 4 or maybe 5, but I think 4.

Like, it stands out in my mind because it was so unexpected.

Yeah, I think she shifted toward more fiction in Season 4, although there was still a lot of "real stuff" in there.

Season 3 had bettybaker, who made the final three with a mixture of non-fiction and fiction. Luna was also there, although she was mostly non at that point.

I would've said Season 5 for Spydie...I think that's when she had her alt which wrote strictly fiction...?

Really, the seasons blur going back that far.

I can remember certain incidents, for example, but for the most part I couldn't tell you in which season they happened...well, except for 4. Everyone remembers 4, oy.
