Green Room - Week 21 - Weekend Edition
May. 7th, 2016 10:41 amHello and welcome the Week 21 Weekend Edition of the Green Room.
Or "Happy Mothers Day Weekend" for those of you who are Mothers, or who have Mothers, or are just outright Muthas... ;)
There is a poll - that is cause for celebration: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/928666.html pick yourself out some nice surprises there, and remember to read, comment and vote for your favorites!

It was mentioned yesterday, so I'm putting it in this GR, "Post 3 things that most people don't know about you"
That's kind of difficult, because I'm not sure what people don't know about me at this point. But then again, there are a lot of new faces that has shown up since the last time something like this happened, so maybe there are things that people don't know.
Hmmm... trying to think of some...
- I spent a couple years as a registered lobbyist. (As part of a Student Government group, we formed an independent PAC so we could lobby on education issues without using student activity funds and/or school equipment, considering that we were going against the administration on a lot of issues)
- It's been over a decade since the last time I did it, but I really enjoy firewalking. Although I think I was even more comfortable walking across a bed of broken glass.
- I always wanted kids, specifically a daughter. I ended up having two, in not so straight forward ways (one is my niece and the other is my almost-bonus daughter)
(The fourth being that I never really liked cats much in my youth, and now I have two. One that I love dearly, the other is also present. :D)
I'll probably have some more if the chance comes up. Just writing those down makes me think there are a lot of things people might not know about me... although I'm sure some of them folks *do* know...
How about you?

Date: 2016-05-07 02:45 pm (UTC)Fire walking!!! How did you get into that?

Date: 2016-05-07 02:54 pm (UTC)Both times I kept going to the back of the line to walk again... and again... of course, by the end the coals weren't as hot, but I just wanted to keep walking across.
They also had a bed of broken glass for people to walk across (as the "building confidence before the fire walking) and most people avoided that. I actually had the instructor yell at me because apparently I was *too* casual as I crossed it. :D. I was walking fairly normally, because as a professional pedestrian I'm used to the concept of "if you feel something sharp, don't step there"!

Date: 2016-05-09 04:18 pm (UTC)But, thinking about both experiences, I can see why it's the transition:
Most people have more experience with stepping on broken glass than they do a bed of hot coals.
You break something in the kitchen... walking down the street... the world is full of broken glass and the secret is "if you feel something sharp, don't step there".

Date: 2016-05-07 02:56 pm (UTC)Yeah, there are probably some things that I *wouldn't* put online. Although even most of those are things people in real life know... *shrugs*
People have different levels of feeling comfortable - and things carry different weights.

Date: 2016-05-08 01:23 am (UTC)- I'm polyamorous, married with two other long term sweeties.
- I'm ridiculously shy and blush all the damn time (you do know this if you've met me. Heh.)
- I worked as a grader for standardized test essays for a while. My very favorite essay was a persuasive one written by a 9th grader, about how pudding cups really need little stands to help them stay upright.
Honestly, I have no idea what people know and don't know about me! The things that seem obvious to me, might not be!

Date: 2016-05-08 01:52 am (UTC)2. I have a scar on my left index finger from a time I was running around the house with a mass of kite string so the family cat could chase it. While I was running, my brother stepped on the string and it closed around my finger like a little noose. That cat is long since gone, but my brother (thank goodness) is still alive.
3. When I was 17, right before I went to college, I saw the band Squeeze perform. The Truth and The Hooters opened for them. The marquee read "Squeeze Hooters, The Truth." I am not making this up. Most of those musicians are still alive.

Date: 2016-05-08 03:14 am (UTC)Mom laughed. I was mortified and sorry for myself (and 9 yo).
Our relationship really never fully recovered.

Date: 2016-05-08 03:16 am (UTC)-I had my gallbladder removed when I was seventeen. The M.D. who performed the surgery was my doctor's partner. (I didn't like him. He was a know-it-all. I liked my own doctor who teased me mercilessly because I blushed from head to toe and shrank to the size of a thimble. It amused him.) He decided to cut me from just under my sternum to my umbilicus. A year later I had to be opened up and re-sewn because I developed an intersticial (sp?) hernia. Fun. Not so much.
-As a dedicated Stephen King reader I was a long-time participant on alt.books.Stephen.King, or absk as we called it. (I have the t-shirt to prove it!) I was lucky to have been on the newsgroup during its golden days when people were kind, generous, and delighted to share their joy in King's work and each other. Although the last time I popped in to ask a question there were still a couple of names from the old days it has become a very different...space, but it was once a Camelot. (therealljidol reminds me a bit of that time...in spirit.)
-I loved school in Scotland. I loved my uniform, navy and light blue. I loved the morning assemblies that began with The Lord's Prayer, God Save The Queen, and a hymn. One morning when I got to school, Dalmuir Elementary, it was a mass of smoldering rubble. I cried my eyes out. A kind father of a little boy who was about my age and also attended my school took pity on me and walked me home. He told my mother that his son and I were the only children who cried. I think losing my school so soon after losing my dad was too much for my little self.
Okay three things y'all might not know about me.
My scar's bigger than your scar, neener neener neener. Wait! Um, maybe not such a good thing. ;-)

Date: 2016-05-08 12:00 pm (UTC)1) I left high school five days before graduation to go 'on the road' and work on the Renaissance Festival circuit. As a gamer, a crafter, and then with a show and another show, I ended up doing that for 14 years.
2) In there, I also got a GED, went to college #1, hated it, went to college #2, taught mask and movement workshops to actors at a bunch of different colleges, and became a professor (as a sabbatical replacement) three months after getting my bachelors degree.
3) I have a thing about real butter for toast and real cream for coffee. If I otherwise like a breakfast restaurant and it's missing one of those, I bring my own.

Date: 2016-05-08 12:26 pm (UTC)1. I'll eat almost anything (kangaroo, baby octopus, pig's knuckles), but I can't do pickled eggs. I tried. I really did.
2. I once jumped two fences at a concert venue to get closer to a band during a festival. I was on crutches at the time. No further injury was accrued.
3. I fist-bumped a kitten at a cat cafe in Akihabara. From the way the owners started laughing, I think this is perhaps uncommon.

Date: 2016-05-08 05:51 pm (UTC)When I was 16, I was an Egg Day princess for the Egg Days Festival at the very small town in which I lived. It was a mess. Next Idol season I may write about it.
I broke a rib in a mosh pit when I was 20. I was drunk, high, and coked up at the time, so I didn't realize it until the next day. I worked for a week in the drive-through window of a fast food restaurant until I couldn't stand it anymore and went to urgent care, where the nurse snarkily insisted nothing could be wrong if I'd been able to work my job - x-ray came back with the tip of a rib broken off and floating.
I skipped math class in high school quite a bit, due to a football player who would pick on me and call me "Timmy" for unknown reasons. When I took the SATs, I did fine on the math section but was sitting there thinking "gosh this stuff looks sort of familiar." When I got back to school the next week, we had a test - it turns out we'd been doing all this SAT prep in math class and I hadn't realized it due to skipping class. I've always regretted that. Later I found out that there *might* be some connection between calling a girl Timmy and assuming she's a lesbian, but I've never been able to remember why/how/where I read about that connection. I was the token lesbian in high school, in fact, despite not actually being a lesbian. Because short hair and no visible boyfriend MUST equal lesbian?
