Green Room - Week 17 - Day 7
Apr. 11th, 2016 09:32 amThanks to everyone who wished me a "Happy Anniversary", both on here and on FB. We had a really nice weekend. I figured you guys knew what to do with your spare time - read, comment and vote for your favorites: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/918431.html
I hope you are doing that, because right now (as I'm posting this), there is a 11 points difference between the top of the poll and the bottom of it. I said it last week, but it's still true, so I'll say it again: that number can change. Especially given that by the vote totals of the last couple of weeks, there are still *a lot* of folks who haven't shown up to vote yet!
If this is a week where fewer people are going to be making the decision though, that just means that your individual vote became that much more potent. But let's face it, as close as pretty much every poll has been in this mini-season, it's probably going to come down to the wire again!
Based on that - who isn't getting the love you think they should be? Sing their praises! Who knows who might be listening!
(and let me know about anything fun *you* did this weekend!)

Date: 2016-04-11 02:26 pm (UTC)It's pretty interesting, and beyond the general statistic-goodness of it, it made me think about the role of the writer in changing these things. I mean, I know producers often turn things upside down before a movie is made, but writers have some initial power there.
And fiction isn't my thing, generally, and I'm proud that when I think about the fiction I have written that I have some strong female characters (who might fall under the "action" category in the article), but I also have female characters falling to violence by men, while I only have one story where a secondary male character falls to violence. I haven't counted my male vs female characters overall, but it makes me ponder.
It's worth spending some time clicking on.

Date: 2016-04-11 03:35 pm (UTC)I figured it would make a decent Work Room conversation - but here is good as well!

Date: 2016-04-11 04:41 pm (UTC)And yeah. Since nobody's saying anything, it may yet make a good work room conversation. Or, since nobody's saying anything, maybe not.

Date: 2016-04-11 04:31 pm (UTC)I played cards without humanity for the first time which was fun. I got to play the hand "The office of 'The thin veneer of narrative plot which underlies porn' has refused your request for 'gay aliens'." Which I thought was exceedingly funny but which didn't win the round. I did win three rounds though, one for scrotal frostbite man being neither the hero we wanted or needed.
And then on the Saturday we went to the Funfair which was fun. I have been informed by American friends that the American equivalent for 'funfair' is a 'carnival' because it's travelling, although I don't quite buy this because I've always imagined carnivals to have animals.

Date: 2016-04-11 06:26 pm (UTC)If it's stationary and ongoing, it's an amusement park. If it's a seasonal thing (like a school fundraiser or a Halloween event), it's probably a carnival.
If it travels from town to town and features performers moreso than rides, it's a circus. There was that TV series, "Carnivale," which was about a circus, so maybe the terminology has changed over the decades? But nowadays, those are just circuses over here. And they usually involve animals, but not always-- whipchick's circus seems to have been mostly highly talented human performers.
It sounds as if you had a great time. Popcorn? Cotton candy? Candy apples? Rides? Or more of a "show"?

Date: 2016-04-11 07:26 pm (UTC)Yes, lots of fun, cotton candy (which we call candyfloss). And hook the duck and rides. Went on the dodgem cars, which I've always enjoyed but was dubious about whether it would still be as much fun now I actually have a driving license, turns out, still just as much fun.

Date: 2016-04-11 07:45 pm (UTC)Both of our kids are licensed drivers now, but we used to wonder how that would go, based on their bumper-car skills. Our son started driving those like actual cars when he was five, and got really irritated at the people who kept trying to crash into him. Our daughter... would get herself wedged into a corner and have to be rescued by a ride operator until she was eleven.
They're both good drivers now, but can you guess which of them was easier to teach? :O

Date: 2016-04-11 05:57 pm (UTC)The poll is making me nervous, but it usually does, so no surprises there! :D
I feel like I say this every week, but
As for my weekend...oh man!
Went to an event a coworker was performing in on campus, had lots of lovely Indian food for dinner, and followed up by dragging people back to my house to roast marshmallows over my new fire pit and drink a bunch. Ended up watching Pirates of the Caribbean and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure while squashed up against my best friend on the couch with an annoyed cat atop both of us. Was a good time, and we're probably going to do something similar again this weekend! :D

Date: 2016-04-11 06:27 pm (UTC)Wow. Well, I'd say marshmallow roasting was in order, then!
Sounds like a hugely busy and fun weekend. :)

Date: 2016-04-11 06:30 pm (UTC)Devouring almost all of a book I'd had on hold (SO close this morning, but I made myself stop and go to work)-- that was fun. A time sink, but fun. :D

Date: 2016-04-11 07:49 pm (UTC)Also, the characters in these books intrigue me. Not just the main characters either-- this third book has an interesting farmer as a secondary character who is just killing me.
I really like them-- thistle_verse did too!

Date: 2016-04-11 08:14 pm (UTC)The videos online don't do the show - or the band - justice, in my opinion, but still worth checking out if you're into either heavy metal or mariachi or just a good time. Metalachi, the world's first and only heavy metal mariachi (cover) band! (https://www.facebook.com/Metalachi/?fref=ts).
So good. So, so good.

Date: 2016-04-12 07:46 pm (UTC)I'm seriously so obsessed right now. And the songs online are fun, but you cannot, at all, imagine how super-duper fun their live show is so if you can, you have to catch them live!!!
