I was asked a couple questions yesterday - and the thing about questions is that you know for every person asking them, there are a least two people *not* asking about it!

So I will cover my response here:

The questions concerned what happens after you are eliminated.

My Wednesday started off with something of a rude shock, but hopefully it will get better this evening. I still have "miles to go before I sleep", though.

Today's paranoia: Robot cars.

So, there are 10's of thousands of people in the world - probably more like millions - who make their living driving cars and trucks. As self-driving technology becomes more and more available and useful, there's going to be a whole lot of unemployed people without a whole lot of jobs for them to move into.

So that got me thinking "what do we do with all the people whose jobs are eliminated without any humans replacing them?" They're not all going to be able to become car-robot repairpeople.

Solve this problem for the world, everyone. Other than a guaranteed income for everyone, I don't know that I have a solution.

This is going to be an increasing problem in most industries that deal with serving the public, there will eventually be some form of computerized replacement. That will eventually devolve into an apocalyptic melt-down.

A couple of years ago Current Employer installed new registers as well as a "u-scan" area. The thought with the u-scan as far as we, the employees, were concerned was that we'd use it to buy something for lunch or break instead of using one of the regular lines. Turned out that three-quarters of my coworkers still went through regular lines. When they were asked why, their response was overwhelmingly, "I'm not going to make [Current Employer] lay off anybody."

Well, nobody's been laid off :knocks wood: but the sentiment is still there. OTOH people with a carriage full of stuff will attempt to use the u-scan because they don't want to wait in line. They don't get away with it, LOL.

ETA: I use the u-scan because I don't want to spend my lunch/break waiting in line. I'll use it at Not Current Employer because I don't trust their baggers, LOL.

Both of the stores I shop at in town have put in self-check stations.

They still need someone to monitor them closely, though, and they're busy enough that they haven't lost any work because of them. Ironically, it's created jobs. :)

Glad to here it hasn't lead to lay offs *touch wood*. I can see in my local stores there seem to be just as many staff, it just gives more time to deal with customers, stack shelves etc. The thing is it's still really difficult for computers to recognise something without a barcode or other computer-friendly identification. When a computer can look at a chair and go 'that's a chair' then we're in trouble.

Well considering these studies have been proving what we can observe-- that a large cut of developed nations are full of kids and teens whose ultimate career goals are 'to be famous' or to do other work that we'd qualify as more glamorous than working in an orchard or a manufacturing plant, I think the future is probably going to hold really weird things for employment in general.

I never know how much of this is a genuine shift and part of it is the age old kids wanting to be superman or an astronaut, maybe this is lingering into children who are older and thus in different versions, but I think it in many instances needs to be taken as much a grain of salt as the superman one would be.

Some things will get better and others will get worse. There's also the thing that every generation is becoming more tolerant than its predecessor. Maybe some vanity and self-aggrandizement is the price we have to pay.

"Just Don't Look" reminded me of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror VI: Paul Anka and Lisa Simpson tell you how not to get et by giant advertisements! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlKao_Pox5A)

I'm not going to write it, but it does seem to lend itself well to advertising as a whole, and how the internet earns money. :)

Do you have limits to crazy? I have fiction ideas for all the prompts but some of them are just awful. Since I'm writing another non-fic entry, I'd be more than happy to share those ideas if you'd like.

I think you could do a great humour piece with 'Verbal vomit'(some funny incident/person you know). Or continue from where you left last week with 'reptile dreams'(I don't know if there is anything to continue there)
'Wanna to see what you're playing for?' -Is a survivor based prompt..and you could write about a challenge/competition with too much at stake.

If nothing immediately springs to mind I like to free associate - I'm inspired by images, and for this week's entry I thought of reptile dreams, and I immediately started generating lot of images of the desert in the southern part of the US, and lizards bathing themselves on rocks, and living kind of a dreamlike existence ... then I was thinking of the rock formations out there that I knew of, and when I pictured Fat Man's Misery in Utah (ETA: at least, I think it's Utah) I idly thought, "Huh. Wouldn't it be interesting if people lived down in there?" and the whole story just popped into my mind.

This was relatively straightforward, at least. Sometimes I can get a little far off the topic.

You might think of lizards in the jungle leaving in droves just before a flash flood (or an ant raid, which is horrifying), or a stoner's pet gecko, or a dying dragon - and any of these could lead to an interesting idea for you, in fact - just lay there coming up with images until one of them gives you a flash of inspiration.
