Welcome to Week 11!

Last night we had some results: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/898318.html

Some new topics: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/898794.html

and a Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/898968.html

Tonight is the deadline for the second (of four) weeks of the Second Chance Gauntlet: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/897827.html so if you, or someone you know, want a shot to get into this, now is the time!

***

Granted, there are still a couple installments of Second Chance Gauntlet that could end up turning everything upside down.

But right now, today, we are edging pretty close to the Top 40... which is just a little bit above the Top 30, when the bottom falls out of the teams completely and everyone is on their own.

How are you feeling right now? Where would you rank your chances of being a part of that Top 30?

Let the fun, frustration, panic and despair begin! Time to write another entry. I'm thinking about "innocuous," but who knows where I'll actually land.

So I can write an entry for week two Second Chance tonight, if I think I can pull something together, or wait for week 3, is that correct, Gary?

Leaning toward Pourquoi Story, though I'm thinking that may be too popular this week.

I was planning on winning, so I hope my chances of hitting the Top 30 are good. ;-) But the team structure's caused a lot of surprises, so one bad week could send me packing.

Haha, that's awesome!

Does anyone else look at the topics week after week and think "I wonder if I suggested one of those?" Because I forgot I'd suggested any and can't find the list of topics I suggested. Lots of them sound like something I might suggest - at least one or two a week. This week, three look like they might be mine.

It's like sometimes I leave myself notes and find them six months later and recognize the handwriting but not the words.

Not with the topics, (although, kudos to this weeks suggesters, because I like most of them - shock and amazement).

I have done it with jotted bits of writing. It's weird to run across a well-worn tablet, and recognize my handwriting without any memory of writing the content, but it happens from time to time.

"You will feel a mild tingling sensation, followed by death."

Was mine (or rather my alts). I seem to forget what I put down until I see it and then remember.

I could have sworn that was mine, but I have no idea what I even submitted!

I read this and was filled with doubt. I just went and checked, it was mine.

Unless we submitted the same quote which would be eerie and cool.

I've recognized some of mine, as a couple came in up the early weeks (when I still had a memory). I'm pretty sure 404 was mine, too.

I've come across stories I've written (like, fanfic stuff) from years ago, and I'll read it and think, "This is good!" But it's like someone else wrote it. Even if I vaguely remember writing the story, the words may be a complete surprise. There's only so much room in the memory, and things get crowded out to make way for new information. The strange part is not getting to choose what you forget. :O

Well, I submitted 3 for my husbnd too, since he didn't want to.

But now I can't remember which 3 were "his" and which were "mine."

Boomerang was mine. I think 404 was. It's all kind of vague right now.

Seriously, because it would be a lot handier to remember things I need to remember and forget the time I wet my pants at Shakey's Pizza when I was eight.

From: [identity profile] whipchick.livejournal.com
That's an essay - not just the pants, but why we remember what we would prefer not to.

Yes, why must the trauma memories stick harder?

One of my earlier stories this season (about not being able to trust your brain) included the lament that if you're going to forget stuff, could you at least get a vote in prioritizing what?

I don't need the street address of where I lived when I was 6. Where I parked my car an hour ago? THAT would be helpful. ;)

My student job in college was switchboard operator. I haven't needed any of those numbers since the early 80s, but I can still tell you the extensions for admissions, the library, all the dorms, the dean's office....etc.

I once read that trauma memories stick harder, and all negative memories stick harder, because they are ways of warning our brains against experiencing them again. Like an evolutionary survival mechanism type of thing. So we literally actively have to work harder at remembering good stuff and non-threatening things, because our brains aren't wired to prioritize those first for survival.

I can believe that! Perhaps that's part of the thinking behind practicing "gratitudes" or other daily meditations on things to be thankful for-- to counteract that effect.

These are Game Genie codes for Bubble Bobble on the original NES. The first two, when used in combination, will give you turbo speed. The last one gives you 99 lives. I committed these to memory when I was in early elementary school. Years later, after graduating college, I was digging through old video game shit at my parents' place, and came across my NES, Game Genie, and games. I hooked it all up and without even realizing what I was doing, entered those codes. I forgot what they even DID until I started playing the game after I'd entered them. But I remembered all three codes with 100% accuracy and I remembered they went with that game.

But where the fuck I put my keys on any given morning, or the name of the person I was just introduced to at work - nope. Apparently remembering *that* isn't important. FU, brain! Damn ornery thing.

Date: 2016-02-24 07:46 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] halfshellvenus.livejournal.com
Oh, boy-- those key codes are random!

Though I wonder if part of what helps you might not be muscle memory as well as the brain. You worked two paths every time you entered those codes, so they got extra reinforcement.

I do this all the time. (Come across jotted pages and not be able to cipher) It's as if my handwriting has different personalities too- if I'm nervous- it's spidery and illegible, angery- bold and sharp- happy- it's more rounded... the tone comes through even if the words can't be read.

No, I remember what I submitted (and if I didn't, Gmail is searchable :) ).

One of mine has already come up, so I think I'm off the hook for the time being.

I don't think I saved the paypal report that would have included my words...

Ok, just searched and I'm now sure I didn't save it. The good news is that all of the topics will be a surprise to me this season. :D

That's funny, and yes I do that! I have no idea what I suggested originally. Oh wait.. I remember one. But not the rest. I wonder if I could dig it up... Off to go dig..

Ha, I totally do that. I'm not a pen-and-paper person at all, but I do it with all sorts of digital notepads and whatnot. Text files on my tablet, that sort of thing. I'll just jot shit down sometimes when an idea pops into my head, or if I need to blow off steam and lack an appropriate rant buddy in the immediate vicinity (and lack an internet connection enabling me to just subject my FB friends to it). And then it's out of sight, out of mind...until I accidentally stumble across it all like "wait, what?" and recognize the tone and inflection and everything as me, but don't remember actually putting the words there myself.

I'm thinking either Monkey's Paw or Pourquoi Story.

I don't know. I'll figure it out after I turn in grades.

What exactly is a pourquoi question? I know pourquoi is the formal why? In french, but seriously- is it as easy as a why question story? Not that it's easy , but you i'm sure you understand! :)

Google says a "pourquoi story" is a "why things are the way they are" kind of origin story. Like, "How the tiger got his stripes."

Because when I first read that, I thought What's a "why" story? Sounds like meta! :D

From: [identity profile] ellison.livejournal.com
Oh cool, I love those kinds of origin stories! Ok I may need to do that for home game, unless I get in on second chance, in which case I may do it for that! :)

It's like a "Just so" story. It's a tale that explains because-why about something.

How am I feeling? Helpless and hopeless, as I don't have a clue as to what to write this week. I'm sorely tempted to take a Bye...

Bye the way...

I have a few queries :
1. Are we going to play as individuals when we reach Top 30?
2. Do we get to use the byes till top 20?
3. What happens to teams who have been pooling the byes? Do they distribute the byes among themselves when they turn individual? What if there are only 2 byes left for 4 people in the team?
