10 weeks into Friends and Rivals, and our writers are on fire!

Not literally.

Well, maybe literally, I don’t know what they are doing right at this moment!

At any rate, there is some really good things to read this week.

Before we get to them though, we also have a couple bye-outs, people who ran out of byes and missed today’s deadline.

ellison and xo_kizzy_xo are leaving us.

I hope they take a shot at getting back into the fray during the Second Chance Gauntlet! There are still 3 more weeks to try!

As for the rest of the contestants, we will be losing 3 contestants from the Teams (or the makeshift oversized “teams”)

Everything got away from me (thank you work schedule). Had a rough draft written for this week and had absolutely no time Friday to rewrite/edit/post it. I tried, god knows, but I knew I'd be nowhere done by deadline :(

So now that we've had time to sort out the effect of this team thing this season... it seems to me the main (only?) practical effect is a built in incentive for people to automatically vote for everyone in their team, that and the eliminations are no longer the lowest voted entry overall but the lowest vote getter of the person who had the misfortune of being on the lowest averaging tribe? None of these things sound like an improvement over ye olde "direct vote" system.

That was always my fear. BUT what I think is going to be interesting (because it's always interesting when it happens - groups of people who support each other is hardly unique) is what happens when these groups are broken up and it becomes an individual game? How many of the readers are going to jump ship from who they came in with? (again that is something that I've seen happen ever season but it could be heightened this time around)

I think that we're going to see a huge shift in who's getting the most votes when we get to the top 30. Teams have something of an insulating effect—if you're in a team, unless everyone completely tanks, you can have someone having an "off" week who won't necessarily be penalized for it—they can write something that's not-great but still stay "on the island", so to speak—stay in on a piece that might have gotten them voted out in a normal week of Idol. It's also easier to get people to vote for you/your team and keep you "safe", because it's a much smaller poll, and all they have to do is click the box for everyone, so posting to your journal going, "hey, vote for us!" is simple stuff (and something I've seen people do, to decent effect).

once everything is dissolved at the top 30, things are going to change a lot, I'd guess, and we may have some surprises as to who goes home first.

Sorry Gary, I'm sure this had been asked before: if a team has the lowest average, do they suffer all three losses, or is the average recounted after each loss?

I think he calculates the bottom n teams (based on the averages) and then eliminates the bottom person (just one) from those teams. (Run-offs being the exception to the rule.) If he did it the other way, you'd see an entire team voted out in one go, and that's pretty merciless even for Gary. ;-)

Nope, it's going to be the three teams with the lowest average overall each losing the member with the lowest score. 's how he's been doing it all season. :)
