Tonight is the deadline to get your entries in: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/894992.html

I'm going to try my best to be there on time, but I may be called away. TPTB have been calling me pretty much non-stop over the last couple of days to fill in for the Scalia vacancy on the Court. I finally agreed to hear a couple cases. Pretty sure I'm going to go with the death penalty on all of them. Regardless of what they are about.

Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association? Death.

Evenwel v. Abbott? Death

Zubik v. Burwell? Death

Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt? Double death

Fisher v. University of Texas and United States v. Texas? You guessed it - death!

I'm pretty sure I can convince the majority of my new colleagues to vote with me for most of these.

Personally, I follow the astute wisdom of the great leader of Freedonia, Rufus T. Firefly:

"Whatever it is, I'm against it!"

I have a question - regarding posting an entry. What is the general stance on posting a piece or a scene that has been posted before but has been very, very heavily edited?

For example; let's say that I read the prompt and had an idea for a piece. But I had written a similar piece several years ago. So I go to look at it and the writing is pretty low quality but I like the general idea. So I rewrite it completely for Idol but keep the characters and setting and maybe a couple of lines from the previous version.

I certainly wouldn't do it every week, but is this acceptable to do as a one off? The rewrite is a good strong piece of writing that I am proud of, and which was inspired by one of the prompts. But I do not want to hurt my teams chances because someone reads it and goes 'Hey, I've read this before - she's cheating!'

This is very close to the question that deeply concerned me this week, as I wondered about whether to post a piece I am working on, or not. I almost took a bye, in fact posted I would, then deleted the by and posted what I have been writing instead. I still worried, however, that since it was not one hundred percent written this week in full response to the topic, well, you get the idea, I think.
.
FIRST I must say the most important thing is to be honest, and say exactly what you have said, the circumstances of writing and re-writing. So if anyone thinks "Oh wait, I saw that before" then you have that response covered already by having quote-unquote confessed before -- maybe in a forenote at the head of the piece, or in a footnote at the end.
.
SECOND I also believe we should be absolutely free to post ANYTHING AT ALL if we believe in it, and
.
THIRD, we must also take the consequences, which *might* include losing votes
.
BUT VOTES are not what this is really about. This whole idol thing is, for me at least IMHO, about writing. Because, AFTER ALL WE ARE ALL OF US GOING TO BE ELIMINATED sooner or later EXCEPT FOR ONLY ONE PERSON/writer/contestant.
.
There. My two cents.

I agree with this. IMO if you've edited and rewritten the piece sufficiently that over 60% is new, it's basically a new piece. Lord I doubt the majority would remember one piece out of umpteen hundred read!

There's no rule against reusing pieces. I know that in Season 9 there was some controversy when someone reposted a piece without making any changes to it whatsoever, but they stayed in that week (even if a lot of us felt that it violated the spirit of Idol :P).

If you have, in essence, rewritten the piece, you should be fine. I did the same thing last season when I liked an old idea, but didn't like the execution. I rewrote it, posted it, and it was fine. I imagine you'll be fine, too. :)

I would honestly never know unless you told me. :D

I don't think there's a rule against it and it sounds like you're doing a significant rewrite, so I can't see how that violates anything in spirit or practice.

If you're really rewriting it (probably in light of the prompt you're choosing, too, I would guess), then I think it's fair game.

After all, people rewrite fables/fairy tales all the time for Idol. It's the angle, the style, where and how the story starts and stops that tends to make them different from the source material.

The only trouble spot I remember was someone who simply reposted something they'd written earlier. Not rewritten, not reapproached, just... relinked.

I personally wouldn't do that, but it's not "illegal." It just runs the risk of you getting voted out. But I don't think what you're talking about falls into that category. :)

I don't know about you, but I recently went back through my fiction tag to read things I wrote for previous Idol seasons and there were some things in there I didn't remember *I* wrote.

I'm not likely to remember something that is heavily edited from several years ago (I might for one or two people I'm close to, but not for most people).

Don't pre-confess. 1. There's no need to, because what you're doing isn't wrong, and 2. It will just invite people to get their panties in a twist.

If you're re-working it that much, IMO you're doing more creative writing work than a serial that is continuing with the next scene from last week, with the same world/plot/characters, etc.

Why in fuck's name would you admit to it?!

Okay, seriously. Just MHO here - if you've posted it before *in Idol* don't do it (unless you're reworking it to the point where it's meant to be a follow-up or entirely new take). If you've posted it before someplace else and you totally reworked it, fair bloody game.

I can't remember if I posted it in Idol or not, which was the main issue. But after posting this question I did yet another edit, and truthfully it has ended up being maybe 5% similar material - the character and setting/concept is the same but the writing itself is all original so I am not particularly worried any more.

So much death, Gary. Did you run out of cake? I guess you didn't expect such a rush, what with only having three bits and all.

This week has been really difficult.

1. The treatment for my migraines hasn't taken effect so far.

2. Mass layoffs at S/O's workplace, including the closure of the office he works at. He's been spared so far, but the commute time is jumped from 25 minutes to 1.5 hours one way to the nearest company office.

I have strong feelings about how I would rule in Kesha vs Sony (http://jezebel.com/how-we-failed-to-protect-kesha-1760142637) and they are not kind towards Sony or towards contract law.

Agreed. Sony may be in the right in terms of contract law, but they're being morally repugnant here.

There is the problem. Most of these giant record labels are rather morally repugnant, and sadly, Kesha's not the first, nor will she be the last stuck in such an awful situation.

I think this is why I boycotted the RIAA for so many years, and why I hope that musicians can make it via independent labels. I had high hopes for budding musicians showing their works on youtube, but they're harder to find now.
