Green Room - Week 10 - Day 4
Feb. 19th, 2016 09:22 amTonight is the deadline to get your entries in: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/894992.html
I'm going to try my best to be there on time, but I may be called away. TPTB have been calling me pretty much non-stop over the last couple of days to fill in for the Scalia vacancy on the Court. I finally agreed to hear a couple cases. Pretty sure I'm going to go with the death penalty on all of them. Regardless of what they are about.
Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association? Death.
Evenwel v. Abbott? Death
Zubik v. Burwell? Death
Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt? Double death
Fisher v. University of Texas and United States v. Texas? You guessed it - death!
I'm pretty sure I can convince the majority of my new colleagues to vote with me for most of these.

Date: 2016-02-19 07:07 pm (UTC)For example; let's say that I read the prompt and had an idea for a piece. But I had written a similar piece several years ago. So I go to look at it and the writing is pretty low quality but I like the general idea. So I rewrite it completely for Idol but keep the characters and setting and maybe a couple of lines from the previous version.
I certainly wouldn't do it every week, but is this acceptable to do as a one off? The rewrite is a good strong piece of writing that I am proud of, and which was inspired by one of the prompts. But I do not want to hurt my teams chances because someone reads it and goes 'Hey, I've read this before - she's cheating!'

Date: 2016-02-19 07:26 pm (UTC)This is very close to the question that deeply concerned me this week, as I wondered about whether to post a piece I am working on, or not. I almost took a bye, in fact posted I would, then deleted the by and posted what I have been writing instead. I still worried, however, that since it was not one hundred percent written this week in full response to the topic, well, you get the idea, I think.
.
FIRST I must say the most important thing is to be honest, and say exactly what you have said, the circumstances of writing and re-writing. So if anyone thinks "Oh wait, I saw that before" then you have that response covered already by having quote-unquote confessed before -- maybe in a forenote at the head of the piece, or in a footnote at the end.
.
SECOND I also believe we should be absolutely free to post ANYTHING AT ALL if we believe in it, and
.
THIRD, we must also take the consequences, which *might* include losing votes
.
BUT VOTES are not what this is really about. This whole idol thing is, for me at least IMHO, about writing. Because, AFTER ALL WE ARE ALL OF US GOING TO BE ELIMINATED sooner or later EXCEPT FOR ONLY ONE PERSON/writer/contestant.
.
There. My two cents.

Date: 2016-02-19 08:04 pm (UTC)If you have, in essence, rewritten the piece, you should be fine. I did the same thing last season when I liked an old idea, but didn't like the execution. I rewrote it, posted it, and it was fine. I imagine you'll be fine, too. :)

Date: 2016-02-19 08:26 pm (UTC)I don't think there's a rule against it and it sounds like you're doing a significant rewrite, so I can't see how that violates anything in spirit or practice.

Date: 2016-02-19 09:13 pm (UTC)After all, people rewrite fables/fairy tales all the time for Idol. It's the angle, the style, where and how the story starts and stops that tends to make them different from the source material.
The only trouble spot I remember was someone who simply reposted something they'd written earlier. Not rewritten, not reapproached, just... relinked.
I personally wouldn't do that, but it's not "illegal." It just runs the risk of you getting voted out. But I don't think what you're talking about falls into that category. :)

Date: 2016-02-19 11:26 pm (UTC)I'm not likely to remember something that is heavily edited from several years ago (I might for one or two people I'm close to, but not for most people).
Don't pre-confess. 1. There's no need to, because what you're doing isn't wrong, and 2. It will just invite people to get their panties in a twist.
If you're re-working it that much, IMO you're doing more creative writing work than a serial that is continuing with the next scene from last week, with the same world/plot/characters, etc.

Date: 2016-02-20 02:06 am (UTC)Okay, seriously. Just MHO here - if you've posted it before *in Idol* don't do it (unless you're reworking it to the point where it's meant to be a follow-up or entirely new take). If you've posted it before someplace else and you totally reworked it, fair bloody game.

Poo on death!
Date: 2016-02-19 10:35 pm (UTC)1. The treatment for my migraines hasn't taken effect so far.
2. Mass layoffs at S/O's workplace, including the closure of the office he works at. He's been spared so far, but the commute time is jumped from 25 minutes to 1.5 hours one way to the nearest company office.

Date: 2016-02-20 01:52 am (UTC)I think this is why I boycotted the RIAA for so many years, and why I hope that musicians can make it via independent labels. I had high hopes for budding musicians showing their works on youtube, but they're harder to find now.

Date: 2016-02-20 05:26 am (UTC)The first, in terms of contract law, seemed to me to be them doing what they had to do to show they were "showing good faith" in coming up with a deal.
(She could very well be completely right in not trusting them to actually do that)
So I wasn't surprised at all to see that a court of law, asked to settle a contract dispute, would settle it as a contract issue rather than on any other elements involved.
That said - damn, it really does suck for her.
Do you know if there is any way for her to buy herself out of the contract/pay a penalty rather than make the next 6 albums?
Can she pull a Prince and change her name to get out?
