Last night was pretty busy. We had the results: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/892023.html

The new topics: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/892170.html

as well as a new Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/892470.html

and some pretty blatant references to the idea that a second chance may be coming soon.

I've been noticing a lot of the "flashing the V-sign" in pictures from teen and pre-teen girls. That sounds weird, unless I point out that I live with one. :) Then it's "Oh, Celena has hit the age where she's starting to get into the whole selfie thing".

I'll admit it, I've never quite understood the selfie craze. But I know there's an empowerment element to it (as well as a narcissistic element, which that blend pretty much describes "being a teenager") and it doesn't harm anyone so really what's the problem?

I was curious though, about what made people start making the V-sign, since I was pretty sure she wasn't telling the French to F-off because she still had her bow fingers. (and she isn't sure either other than "it's what you do")

So I looked it up this morning and figured I'd share it for anyone else who was wondering "when did this become a thing?" http://time.com/2980357/asia-photos-peace-sign-v-janet-lynn-konica-jun-inoue/

As it turns out, quite some time ago... but it took awhile to get back to the US mainstream!

I still want them to get off my lawn, but at least I kind of understand it. (still think it looks ridiculous. But I highly doubt that I'm the target audience of any of them, so who really cares what I think? :D)

I didn't realize the history behind it. Interesting. Now I have a better understanding of why the eldest's gf is doing that in every. Single. Picture.

I bet she's just doing it because everyone else does, though.

The eldest is that way, too. He's very like his gf that way.

I blame it on my ex. He seems to have inherited that all about appearance, status and fitting in thing that his dad has.

I wonder how stupid I had to have been at 18 to find that attractive....

The thing that terrifies me is that the eldest is the same age I was when I met his father. *shudder*

Winston Churchill was often photographed during the second world war making the "V" for victory sign. Or he could have been indicating he wanted another cigar. ;-)

Of course, careful not to make the "V" sign in England (https://www.englishforums.com/English/TwoFingersHistory/jmmgm/post.htm).

Uh...

I know what you're referring to... and there is a subtle but distinct difference between the two hand gestures:

To make the "Peace" or "V for Victory" sign, be sure that your have the palm of your hand facing the direction of the viewer.

If you're in England and you want to tell someone to "Sod Off", you make the V-sign and show them the *BACK* of your hand while doing it.

Really. It's that simple.
