I usually save my poll for past in terms of voting and I didn't this time, and it was an instant reminder of why I don't vote in MY poll right away. Because I check. Obsessively. Run numbers, obsessively. It's a fun time.

I only managed to finish all of the reading because I had the day off, yesterday. I think I'd still be scrambling to finish it all if I had been at work. (No LJ at work -- it's blocked. Sigh.)

I work at a bank, so pretty much ALL social media is blocked -- but dreamwidth is still accessible, same with Ao3.

And yes I spent my first few weeks working there trying to figure out which sites I could use and which ones I couldn't because I figured I'd try to write in my downtime. Which there isn't very much of, considering it's the busiest branch in four states. xD

(But I guess they want me to do actual work, too...)

I don't usually post suggestions or concrit unless it's requested. If you're looking for feedback on your entries, you might want to post a comment on them asking for it.

I know in some communities it's assumed people want it, but I just never assume that, because sometimes it's not taken well. :)

Okay, I have to ask. I've seen people posting screen shots of "Friends who like ___" and I want to know how you even find the friends who like ____ thing to begin with. I mean, obviously, I want to unfriend a few people if they're liking the wrong things, because I'm shallow. Or maybe not.

I've read and voted on all the individual entries, and am about 1/3 through the teams-- so making my way there. I'll reach it by the end of voting time, but the early weeks always kill me in terms of how much reading there is. I can't get anything else done!

Facebook. I hate it SO much. I rarely visit it, and almost never update. One of my sisters isn't even on it. She says that she sees her actual friends in person, or talks to them on the phone. ;) Fair enough!

Oh, and regarding Trump. Trump isn't really the issue, he's just the ugly face of the issue (I mean that metaphorically, though his face is literally ugly too). The issue is that people are being encouraged to be racist in public and being made to feel like that is a totally socially acceptable way to behave. I know we don't do ourselves any favors by cutting off contact with people who have differing views than us, but how much of a nuanced conversation can you have about issues when a person's main point of view is "All Muslims Bad" and they won't look at evidence or talk respectfully?

I mean, at some point, the only way to deal with open racists is to shun them. Keeping them on our friends lists certainly doesn't seem to be discouraging them.

This sums up how I felt when Trump made his first comments re: Mexicans (I am Chicana).

I do believe that, on some level, it's worth engaging with people and trying to change hearts and minds. I also believe that I have to take care of myself, and that some people are never going to come around to my point of view—that, honestly, they're going to continue thinking that I'm subhuman or that questioning their rhetoric means I'm "uppity", and it's not worth my time.

Yeah, I agree there's sort of a line that is the unfriending line. Before I cross that, though, I try to share back links and thoughts that gently contradict the racists' position. Have you ever seen Jay Smooth's talk on How To Tell Somebody They're Racist? (https://youtu.be/b0Ti-gkJiXc) Because its brilliant.

Great video! I've seen it before. It's very succint and easy to understand. If people would hsve more discussions without reverting to the name calling there might be some progress made, at least I hope so.
