Green Room - Week 38 - Day 7

OR... should people ASK YOU MORE than that?
If you're not following the Oscars, or social media right now, you may have blinked and missed the sparks of a movement toward asking women on the red carpet more than "What are you wearing", to instead ask them about their craft, or challenges in the roles - you know, things that they actually do.
Of course, I've seen what doesn't seem to the "counter-argument" so much as it is "another issue" that says that those questions do still need to be continued, because the dresses, jewelry, shoes (etc) is basically a different version of the NASCAR jackets where they list their sponsors. (They are borrowing them, and they are later sold or in some cases, donated to raise money. The point being that it's basically a cross-industry commercial)
I do think that we are moving away from asking what someone is wearing (except in the creepy sense, I think we will always have that!) and I do wonder how that will impact the relationship between Hollywood and the fashion industry. I'm sure it's not going to be much... one of the people who was very outspoken about wanting to talk about craft over clothes tweeted out the credits for everyone who had given
her stuff to wear. So maybe the conversation will simply shift venues.
Which might be the "best outcome" for all of them - with those exposed to the Red Carpet events actually hearing more out of some extraordinary actresses, while at the same time, they get to control the message of how has sponsored them in a more personal manner.
Who knows though - this could be one of those things where people can look at and go "Yeah, they should be doing that" OR it could become a major battleground by the time the sun comes up?

Date: 2015-02-23 02:48 pm (UTC)And yeah, I'm another member of Idol who did not watch the Oscars. I like movies, but Hollywood culture is generally outside my radar.
That said, I cheer on the ladies rebelling against the camera-panning-up-the-body shots and the 'what are you wearing?' and the mani-closeups, when I hear about them. Sure, the red carpet is never going to ask anyone a -deep- question, but you can't deny that it's almost entirely the women that put up with this.
And people can argue that it's part of the culture of the thing, like the sponsors on the jackets in NASCAR, but that doesn't explain why people ask Hillary Clinton the exact same thing.

Date: 2015-02-23 07:07 am (UTC)Re: the Oscars and dresses—I feel like it is very fucking telling that we treat the actresses on the red carpet as though they are models for the designers or whatever and don't ask them about what they're actually there for. I think that asking more than "so, whose design are you wearing?" is an important step in the right direction.
...but I'm also one of those people that was like, "oh, the Oscars are tonight?" as I was cooking dinner. They were very...not interesting to me this year? "Selma" was snubbed, and that was sort of the point at which I went, "welp, that's that" and didn't pay much attention.
Honestly, I was way more interested in the Nebula noms this year. Annhilation for best novel YES. I haven't read anything quite so "what the HELL I cannot put this down!" in years. :D

I am going to lose some of my feminist street cred and say I enjoy the red carpet, and it's ridiculous to think they're going to ask anything interesting or compelling in the five to ten seconds they give each celebrity. The questions they already ask when they aren't talking about clothes are completely eyeroll-worthy, and the people who do the interviews aren't exactly known for their deep thoughts.
But, as I said I missed the show tonight. I'm going to try to find it online.

This is Pouto Lighthouse, on the North Head of the Kaipara Harbour, in the North Island of New Zealand.
It's the strange looking blob in the centre of the map. Zoom out - it really is in the middle of nowhere.
My mum grew up on a farm just inside the harbour. I spent most of my summer holidays there as a kid. And I got married on this beach.

This is my gloriously messy office. Heh.
It was just this last summer that I finally got a space that's entirely mine in the house, and I find it quite wonderful.
This is where I spent a lot of my time, and do most of my writing - on the futon. Or, as I like to call it, the Fainting Futon. I don't have a fainting couch to retire to when I feel overcome. I have a futon. Quite a practical piece of furniture, for fainting or other things.
The perpetually snowy view out the sliding glass door (it'll thaw... eventually):
And finally, my laptop. Without which I would be seriously sad. Heh.
