Today was a "Fair Day" for kids in the county school system, so they have the day off. So I took it off it as well, to "do something with the family".

That was the plan at least - only to find out that the "fun things" planned for the day was going to get their nails done, checking out a dance studio and homework. I was just going to hang out anyway... but was told "Go to work".

So here I am! :)

***

What did YOU have planned for this week and what ended up happening instead?

***

Btw - we crowned our newest Spirit of LJ Idol last night: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/835183.html

She received a special icon, and a choice of the following powers:

- Bring someone back into the game (as of Week 37 - and yes, you can pick someone eliminated in Week 36 as well)

- Immunity for yourself, from now until the Top 5. (you can use it to save yourself once between now and the Top 5.)

- Topsy Turvy - turn the poll upside down - the person with the most votes in that week goes home

- 1 bye for yourself (or a friend) to use between now and the Top 5

- The Save. Not an immunity, but an actual save. Someone is going home - you save them. No one goes in their place

What did she choose?

She is bringing someone back into the game (starting Week 37): So welcome back [livejournal.com profile] lrig_rorrim!

I'm sure that's not something she was expecting to be doing next week!

***

There is also a poll going on: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/835024.html There will be a couple people who will not be around to welcome her back into the fold. Who will those be? That's up to the voters to decide!

This is baffling and amazing and awesome and humbling and really really really neat and a whole bunch of other adjectives all at once.

~rolls up her sleeves~ Back to the word mines with me!

It's pretty neat the way Idol brings people together and makes friends out of competitors. <3

Yes! *dances around the room*

Boy, I wanted that miracle so badly. I just never thought it might arrive in a new form!

*special thanks to Gary for making it a choice*

Also, massive kudos to [livejournal.com profile] kickthehobbit for picking one of the most selfless powers. That's just...really really awesome. I feel like it should be pointed out.

Heh. It wasn't really a choice at all. I saw the powers, knew the three-way tie had been upsetting for a lot of people, and saw a way to rectify that. That she happens to be one of my favorite writers didn't hurt anything, either. ;)

The very same way that the three-way tie was a battle between three superheroes, true to tradition, one of the superheroes comes back from death!

(Is it OK to tell it like this?)

Haha, yessssss! Though I think if anyone here is a superhero it's definitely [livejournal.com profile] lrig_rorrim. ;)

She was never really gone. She was just biding her time while she developed... Laser Breath! With this newfound power, she will begin to burn down the houses of everyone who dared stand against her. Now the contest is no longer about writing. It is about running and screaming while a rainbow of razor lasers scorches the earth behind us.

This is the scene where [livejournal.com profile] lrig_rorrim is defeated and [livejournal.com profile] kickthehobbit resurrects her with her tears. This is the epic story of crying your friends back into life!

Heh. When I got the email last night, the first thing I did was IM [livejournal.com profile] lrig_rorrim asking if she wanted to come back. As neat as the other powers were, she should have been Spirit of Idol, not me, and I feel like if she'd still been in, it would have gone to her. There was a little debate with her about doing the thing that would make it easier for me to make it til the Top 5—but it was basically a no-brainer, andI think if someone else had been given Spirit, they would have done it too. :D

I think you're right, or at least I hope so.

Thanks so much for making that choice! *hugs*

I feel that the gulag finale "together again again" by the muppets is thematically appropriate in more than one way here. We're doomed together, for at least a little while yet. :)

Immunity for yourself, from now until the Top 5.

Hey, I never got that choice in S8!

It would be hard to choose that one, though, knowing that [livejournal.com profile] lrig_rorrim could come back.

I'm so "yay" over that choice, you can't imagine!

Thank you, Jenn!

Yeah, I mean...immunity is tempting! Everyone wants to last, right? But the opportunity to right a wrong was too good to pass up. :)

On the other topic, I'm really sorry your family day turned into "We're froo-frooing, begone!" You have more patience than I if you would hang out while Cynthia and kidlet are getting their nails done. I don't have the patience to get my _own_ nails done!

Does "Fair Day" result in an actual carnival/fair happening at the schools later? Or does it mean something completely different?

From: [identity profile] halfshellvenus.livejournal.com
Wait. They get the day off to attend, and then don't? ;)

My daughter had a school trip to the county fair once in elementary school (grade 3 or 4), and complained that it was all cows and crafts and stuff instead of rides.

Me: But was it better than a day sitting at your desk in school?
Daughter: *dawning look of agreement but refusal to say so*

We have a lot of the same issues here. The school I worked for (as a truancy officer) didn't cancel for fair day, but a lot in the area do. My job was always more difficult that day, as a lot of kids skipped school for the fair.

From: [identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com
I think the tradition started because a lot of rural schools have a LOT of 4H members and other kids who are showing or exhibiting animals at the fair, and they'd end up taking at least one day off to do that anyway. Making it sanctioned made it easier for those kids and their families. At least, that's how I always heard fair day came about, growing up in rural Florida. And yeah, I went to the fair on fair days - up until highschool, when I was allowed to go without my dad and noticed that I didn't actually enjoy the county fair very much, and that many of the other kids were there picking fights and such.
