Green Room - Break Week - Day 8
Dec. 26th, 2014 10:01 amGood morning Idolers!
For Christmas, I lost my voice - but not my ability to post! :)
What did YOU receive?
Heck, even if you don't celebrate Christmas, what have you received recently that you are especially excited about?
Cynthia bought me a new Chromebook.
Which... yeah, I definitely wasn't expecting that. Although, looking back, her comments about how I needed to get a new computer because the old one was *literally* falling apart should have been a clue. (There were a couple keys missing - thanks cats!! and it would frequently freeze up to the point that I had to remove the battery and reboot)
I've *never* owned a new computer before.
Every previous computer has been passed down from a friend - or in the case of the last one, it was a refurbished one. (Which was *awesome*, and I'll never forget the people responsible for giving that to me.) So this is all new territory. I also have to figure the ins and outs of a Chromebook. (I'll be keeping the other one as well, as backup - which is a luxury I could have never imagined having)
***
Not sure if Santa got you any Free Topics: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/818372.html But I sure did!
If Santa didn't get you an LJ Idol shirts - now might be a good time to get them! The original is only available for 4 more days (Dec 30)! http://teespring.com/LJIdol and the variant http://teespring.com/LJIdol3 only has 11!
and of course, if you are doing any "after Christmas sales" on Amazon - click through here first! http://astore.amazon.com/li0cd-20

Date: 2014-12-26 03:08 pm (UTC)First?!?Happy Boxing Day!!!!
My laptop is on its last legs so I've been poking around Best Buy and other places trying to figure out which one would be best for me and how the heck I'll pay for it.
I looked at Chromebook a few times. I like it's handy practicality. However, if you do graphics or play games or do something that requires a lot of memory, it isn't for you.

Date: 2014-12-26 03:19 pm (UTC)Also they are cheap. And durable. The fact that Bob has knocked into this thing a thousand times and knocked it out of my hands even more AND dumped banana pediasure on its keyboard and it works like it just came out of the box and is still in one piece, well...
I have a netbook in my closet that I can show you to prove how amazing that is to me.

Date: 2014-12-26 03:28 pm (UTC)I remember SO and I standing in Micro Center one day last summer. Micro Center does a brisk refurbishing business, so I was looking at all the laptops in my price range and comparing them to the brand spanking new ones compared to the netbooks compared to the desktops...aieeeeeeeeeeee! SO told me off the bat that a netbook wouldn't touch what I'd need it for. Since he's the IT guru, I listen.
OTOH I have a tablet I think I've used maybe a half dozen times. It's got a Kindle reader on it which is the only reason why I still have it.

Date: 2014-12-26 03:32 pm (UTC)We have an iPad mini that's really Bob's, and he's been ignoring it in favor of the new toys he's gotten for Christmas. But I'm sure he'll go back to playing it, too, at some point. I don't think I'd use it if it were for me. I have a phone and a netbook, thanks. That does enough. xD

Date: 2014-12-26 04:02 pm (UTC)I'll no doubt inherit it when he upgrades. I'm just trying to picture how I'd carry the damn thing seeing as I don't use purses and such.

Date: 2014-12-26 04:45 pm (UTC)(Really never got into video games at all. Heck, not overly fond of most board games now that I stop and think about it!)
So hopefully that will work out.
And I'm glad for what people are saying about the durability of it, since the keys are missing due to a cat *literally sitting on them* which popped them off.

Date: 2014-12-26 04:50 pm (UTC)I'm pretty positive I would have lost all of the keys by now. Also, the hinges have managed not to snap under the multiple times Bob has decided to throw himself across my lap at random times without any warning, when my previous netbook is literally in one piece by the wires connecting the screen to the motherboard...
Not to mention I am basically the enemy of all electronics.
Popping keys back in on the Chromebook can be done, too, as I think Bob's picked one or two of them off, before.

Date: 2014-12-26 05:02 pm (UTC)Bob weighs about twice that and has tried to body slam my chromebook before. When I say these things can take a beating I mean it. xD

Date: 2014-12-26 03:42 pm (UTC)So far, I'm otherwise feeling fine: having fun watching KFP build a fancy Lincoln Logs building with his Pappy and catching up on some work. (Yes, this is how I have fun.)
Oh, I also learned to appreciate my cat even more, because he would never be so ill-tempered and nasty as to scratch a little boy who was doing nothing but sitting on a floor with his grandfather and building. I suspect that brat-cat is jealous at having to share my father, but guess what? Humans win! Now she's locked in the back part of the apartment for the remainders of our trip, as she deserves.

Date: 2014-12-26 04:08 pm (UTC)But even though I'm a pet lover, I have no problems by sequestering a furry family member who can't play nice.
We are so lucky that our Luke only talks tough. :)

Date: 2014-12-27 01:10 am (UTC)I basically got a shotshell reloading press, and then a big stack of books. (A collection of speeches by American presidents, a leatherbound Hobbit to go with my leatherbound LotR collection, Isaac Asimov's Foundations trilogy, and then some of the big classic comics like Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns, and Marvel's Civil War, because I was never a comic book guy but want to hit the highlights.)
