Green Room - Week 24 - Day 4
Oct. 10th, 2014 10:08 amJan Hooks died yesterday.
There are a lot of people talking about it, but honestly, not enough.
Of her class of Saturday Night Live, people tend to look at a Phil Hartman and point out (accurately) that he was one of those people who didn't steal the scene, he made them happen. He was the glue that held them together, with solid, understated, performances.
Jan Hooks was the same way.
The fact that the two of them got to be on together just made the show that much stronger.
Her work, in general, tends to be underestimated when people are looking for flashy comedians. She didn't make many waves, but she gave some fantastic performances.
If you haven't seen any of her old SNL stuff, it's time to go to Youtube and check it out. If you have - go refresh your memory.

Last night was BUSY. There are a ton of links to share:
The top priority, of course, is that the MAIN COMPETITION is having a poll. It's happening *right now*. Some fantastic work out there - go discover it! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/790427.html
Last Chance had their own poll, but that came to an end last night, with some people moving forward, and others being eliminated: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/790628.html
They also have a Topic: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/791087.html and a Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/791309.html
We also had TWO people reach the 100 Weeks Survived Mark! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/790801.html and http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/791694.html

Date: 2014-10-10 03:01 pm (UTC)On the other hand we currently get tons of extra overtime pay at work because we are crazy busy so... yeah. That is nice.

Date: 2014-10-10 03:06 pm (UTC)Haven't read the main competition yet. Not for any reason other than I've been playing Bejeweled 3 and reading about the psychology of people's reactions to Ebola instead. But I will read tomorrow, promise!

I mostly agree with your assessment...

From:Jan Hooks passed?!
Date: 2014-10-10 03:38 pm (UTC)crap.
I was a fan of Ms. Hooks even before she was on SNL -- she was a regular cast member on a short-lived show called COMEDY BREAK. As you say, she really was quite talented, and brought something wonderful to everything she did. I will also admit to having something of a crush on the lady at that time, but her talent was undeniable.
RIP, Jan. You shall be missed.
Re: Jan Hooks passed?!
Date: 2014-10-10 03:41 pm (UTC)A friend of mine on Facebook posted about how annoying he finds it that all of the articles mention that she "worked with some of the greatest cast members on SNL", when she WAS one of the greatest cast members on SNL!

Date: 2014-10-10 04:19 pm (UTC)What I love about LJI is the deadlines. Yes, they are terrible, especially for people holding down full time jobs, and writing on the side like I am. But deadlines also gets things done. I end up with ideas I never would have gotten otherwise. I've had LJI posts in the past who I could turn into stories to sell to various magazines and anthologies just because of said deadline.
Sometimes you are second guessing yourself too much. Spends too much time pondering what to write. Sometimes you just have to buckle up and bloody do the thing, and the deadline really helps with that. You don't have time to doubt yourself. You just have to write and hope that it carries you through.
So yeah, that is the reason I keep coming back even when I don't have to invest in the commentary and community building needed to get a big audience anymore. Because it's a kick.
That being said, I do not miss one of the final weeks of my first season (when I was really trying to win) where we had to do five different subjects in a week. Seriously. That one made even me run out of subjects...
Because this place is more active than the Work Room...

Date: 2014-10-10 05:23 pm (UTC)Jan was not a big star, but it's the non-stars who do most of the world's work and make things go smoothly and pleasantly - as in the case of character actors like her.
