Green Room - Week 20 - Day 1
Sep. 2nd, 2014 11:02 amIf you hand a 9-year old a loaded Uzi, is it a "reasonable assumption" that sooner or later, you are going to end up dead?
What about other loaded weapons in the hands of irresponsible adults?
Adults you didn't know at the time were as irresponsible as they turned out to be?
Exactly where is that line between "the person who shot should know better" and "I should have never handed them the gun"?
Is there a level of personal responsibility for putting your own life at risk and if so, where is the line? How about when you stay in your home during a hurricane evacuation?
Does the responsibility rest in the hands of the shooter? Is there a point where that shooter is too young to have "known better" and if so, what is that point?
Do gun owners deserve to not have guns used as an analogy every time you want to talk about other things?
This seems to be an evolving dialogue, with those "old benchmarks" continuing to be examined and changed. Part of that is good, people should always be taking a good hard look at themselves and their culture. Part of it is also ends up confusing, as groups of people grow more apart based upon where they fall in their answers.
Hopefully, at the end of the day, it's conversations about what matters to us, and why, that end up bringing people closer together and questioning the "why" things matter, and what to do as a culture to make things better.

Not sure any of that made sense - but one thing that *does* make sense is that I have a bunch of links to post for you!
We had eliminations last night: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/776190.html
We also had a new topic, with a twist! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/776330.html
and a Work Room for people to find a partner for the first Intersection of Season 9! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/776594.html
One of your fellow contestants put together something to help you out. It's unofficial, but it's there for anyone who needs it: http://karmasoup.livejournal.com/39857.html

Re: Wow
Date: 2014-09-02 04:15 pm (UTC)Again, not sure if that just says something about the state of Livejournal (and that it was down all morning)
Re: Wow
Date: 2014-09-02 04:57 pm (UTC)Of course, I don't know if that has to do with an outage, but I thought I'd put it out there :)
Again, not sure if that just says something about the state of Livejournal...(snip)
Based purely on that criteria, it says to me that LJ is now mostly centered around ONTD...and Idol is right now the most active non-ONTD community :)
Re: Wow
Date: 2014-09-02 05:00 pm (UTC)Yep. I definitely think that we are. Maybe it's time for Idol to replace ONTD once and for all! :D

Re: Wow
Date: 2014-09-02 05:47 pm (UTC)(OK, probably not going to happen. But the more content LJ has, the greater the profile it will have. It's one of the reasons that if I do a mini-season in the future, that I want to reach out into other social media and bring people to Livejournal.)

Date: 2014-09-02 04:24 pm (UTC)Just thought I'd put this here in the GR too. I'm most interested in writing on either Rapture or Shibusa, if it matters. I promise I'm fun and moderately easy to work with, and I've done Intersections several times before. Thanks!

The parents and the "instructor" are completely culpable. The daughters of the dead man have reached out to the young girl in the hopes that they can reassure her that they don't hold her responsible and that they don't want her life to bend off this hinge. How can it not, though? I can't even imagine what the parents were thinking. I do know that this man's death was sheer negligence and not a freak accident. Poor safety practices and the gun absolutely positively needed to be strapped to the shooting table. Period.
But what about people who know someone is inebriated and allow that person to climb behind the wheel of a car?
I have a friend who died in a hunting accident. I have two friends who were killed by a drunk driver. I feel far more rage about the drunk driver.
Six hundred folks die in gun "accidents" yearly. Ten thousand people are killed in drunk driving accidents every twelve months.
The boy who killed our friend in a duck blind killed himself two years later. He simply could no longer live with the devastation he had unintentionally wrought when he tripped with a loaded shotgun in his hands. The man who killed my friends, their three cousins, paralyzed a fourth cousin, and killed a family of three in another car did light jail time and did not go on to do works of charity. He was pulled over a few years later for...yeah, not brandishing a gun, but driving under the influence.
I understand that guns are scary and that cars are as everyday as toasters. But this country needs perspective on how innocent lives are lost.

Date: 2014-09-03 03:23 am (UTC)Those parents should be charged, on some child abuse level, and court appointed family/individual counseling should be sentence.
Just my opinion.

Date: 2014-09-02 04:59 pm (UTC)I would not say, "are going to," but it's a reasonable assumption that SOMEONE _might_ end up dead, including you. Because... nine-year-old!
Who is now probably scarred for life, but given that she's being raised by the kind of parents who think that going on a shooting-range expedition is an awesome event for the whole family... that was probably inevitable. :(
Why do I have the impression that the instructor's family now wants to sue the family of the nine-year-old, for wrongful death? :(

Date: 2014-09-02 06:32 pm (UTC)The day it happened, I watched the video. It's ridiculous how little a 9 year old girl is, and it's insane how close to her he was standing. You can't expect a child to handle the recoil, or have the awareness of the consequences.
I grew up around guns, because my dad was a hunter. When I was 9 yo, he was still putting the fear of God into me if I even touched the gun case.

Either way it's awesome to still be so inspired by this community. Can't wait to see what people come up with!

Date: 2014-09-02 07:48 pm (UTC)If you create the blog for anonymous submissions, thus handing immature cruel possibly disordered people the gun, are you responsible when they shoot it and use your blog's anonymous submissions to harass people and spew hate towards them?
Personally, I think the creator of the blog is very much responsible. She made the choice to make anonymous hate public and to give it a forum. No one forced her to.
