The new topic is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/770282.html

I'm pretty sure it won't be difficult for people to think of an example of disinformation in their everyday experience.

Which means that finding your point of view is going to be crucial.

How are you going to get your voice to be heard above the rest?

After all, with people leaving every week, that question of "Why NOT me" comes up. What do you have to offer that no one else does? Why should people want to keep you around to read what you are going to come up with next?

Why should people want to keep you around to read what you are going to come up with next?

Because one of these days, I might surprise you? :)

And here I was thinking it was for our good looks ;)

I almost said "because I have purple hair" at first. :)

Well, if you want to say "purple hair" I can say "new haircut involving hacking off 5 inches of hair so now my natural curly waves are having the time of their lives in this humidity" :)

Ha, I had most of my hair hacked off, too, and layered. So now if I don't blow-dry I look like the world's fattest anime girl (unnaturally-colored hair that kind of flies off in all directions).

Oh, *WOW*!

... Nope! Never happened! Uh-uh! Not even once! I've always been surrounded by honest people! Can't you tell that from my perpetually sunny, optimistic demeanor?

i feel like a lot of idolers are going to go that route. plus, considering how naive i was in my tender youth, i usually berate myself whenever i look back at the kind of bullshit people used to feed me... because i tended to fall for the same stupid lies over and over. as i'm still recovering from my latest depressive episode, i'd rather not explore memories which may make me start hating myself again.

i appreciate the suggestion, gary... and maybe i'll be able to use it. but in the state i'm in, i'd best tread carefully, so to speak...

Point taken... and you had no idea of the state I was in when you made that suggestion, so you had no way of knowing why I had already rejected that approach.

We're good... and I have come up with a couple of ideas since my initial cry for help. Indeed, I *MAY* even be doing a collaboration of sorts. We shall see.

Thanks again, Gary.

I can't think of anything either. Let's be nervous together.

(I keep thinking this would be something fun to collaborate on, but I have no idea who to ask or what the plot would be. *mulls it over*)

... I just came up with a couple of ideas

Date: 2014-08-15 06:28 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ellakite.livejournal.com
(1) A STORY RELATING TO ACTUAL "FALSE" PROPAGANDA -- A so-called "Big Lie", deliberately disseminated to fool a large number of people.

(2) A STORY RELATING TO AN "URBAN LEGEND" THAT PEOPLE BELIEVE IS TRUE. You can find plenty of these on SNOPES.COM.

I think I've come up with an idea for myself... but I've fleshed it out so much that I think it would be best if I did it solo. Still, if you're desperate and think you want in, send me a personal message and I'll explain what I have in mind...

From: [identity profile] reckless-blues.livejournal.com
Mm. Do what is best for the story. If it'll really add something by being told from a second and separate perspective (or - ideally - if that perspective is indispensable), I'll pitch in. If you're fine on your own, then it's better that way.

Re: ... I just came up with a couple of ideas

From: [identity profile] ellakite.livejournal.com
My idea centers is centered on telling the same story twice... and though I could write both takes myself, the combined work could benefit if one story is written in a different author's perspective/style.

Essentially, I've had an idea for a while to tell two different origin stories for the same thing. The subtitle for one story is "The Myth That Everyone Believes", while the subtitle for the other tale is "The Truth That No One Knows". You can see how the two tales combined could fit the prompt.

I'll send you details on my idea via PM. Let me know whether you want in ASAP.

Mm. *mulls it over* It's an interesting story, but I don't think I myself could make it interesting. You take it. I will be happy just to read it when it's done.

Not a problem! I came up with a killer idea and might have shanghaied someone into working with me (if not, it'll stand on its own). Last season (well, in Exhibit B, the miniseason) Gary set mandatory collaborations for the topics several times. (And I missed most of them, much to my despair, because I got axed early and didn't manage to weasel my way back in via SCI until they were done with.) If that happens again I might hit you up.

What do you have to offer that no one else does?

Well-written, light-hearted pieces that usually leave the reader with a smile. There are so many great writers in this competition, but I think folks enjoy my work because I rarely go the Dark & Serious route. Which isn't to say that I can't go that way, it's just not my natural habitat.

Also, I really try to take the prompt in an unexpected direction, and I love reading other entries that do so.

Everyone can empathize with a disinformed protagonist, but it seems like it would be an interesting challenge to write a disinformer protagonist.

"Ah, but you see I am immune to iocane!" (or something like that)

But, actually I suppose he wasn't the most sympathized with character, either.

YES. This is exactly the sort of prompt I've been waiting for all season.

It would be ironic if I failed to come up with anything.

Looking forward to working on this one.

In answer to the question: Um, I don't know what I could say that would make people want to keep me around, just that if you like my writing, it's likely that you'll like my future writing too :).

Mmhm, I did. (The Post-It notes will come in handy. I have optimized human communication. *pleased*) I just wasn't sure what to do, if I should make a post about it in my journal or if you'd see it or anything.

Thank you. :3 *chuffed*

No worries, I just wanted to be sure you'd liked it. I thought the "tie clips" were adorable, and the post-its I had a feeling would come in handy!

When I got my box, I sent a private message to Eska818, as she sent me my gift, to let her know that it had arrived and that I'd enjoyed it. I probably wouldn't have seen a post in your journal, since we aren't on each other's Flist. :)

The problem with this topic is that it has been much abused for decades, both in real life (all those 'scandals' and 'discoveries' and 'cover-ups' and 'media wars') and in fiction (Total Recall, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451 come to mind at once).

So what is left that is not boring and what direction is not immediately obvious?

From: [identity profile] xo-kizzy-xo.livejournal.com
That was my first thought too (Brave New World, in particular. Hated the book, btw).

The only thing I can think of is an article I'd read a long time ago about those so-called radio "spy" stations where they read off a bunch of numbers then go off the air. One of those "voices" is purportedly a robot who sounds like s/he says "End of disinformation" as opposed to "End of information" before going off the air.

And no, I have no idea why that's stuck with me all these years.

So I spent all afternoon yesterday in the ER with a massive spasm of my chest wall. Totally thought I was having the big one. As a result, I have been pumped full of more narcotic medications than I can name. And even though it's been several hours since my last dose, I am still slightly stoned off my ass.

To that end, I need another set of eyes. If you have a set of eyes I can borrow (and are not currently stoned)....HALP!

so gang....would u rather read about disinformation in the sports world or would you rather we stay in Hollywood again this week & talk about all the bad info you get "on set" and anytime u get a group of actors together or we can talk about disinformation and miscommunication when u work for big chainy themed restaurants that are mismanaged.
