On the way into work this morning, I was listening to a discussion about the shift in the tourism industry toward private homes being rented out for short visits instead of hotels.

Toward the end of the piece, they mentioned a newer trend toward people converting their basements into elaborate dungeons/puzzles and people paying to stay there - with the only way out being that they have to escape. I don't know much more than that, although from the sounds of it, it sounded like something out of Saw or Hostel.

I'd say that it can be chalked up in the "people are weird" column - except that I'm talking to the Idol audience, who are pretty much the spokespeople for the "people are weird" movement! ;)

And to continue to prove that Idol contestants are weird:

That dungeon/puzzle thing in people's basements? Sounds wicked awesome and I would love to do something like that (not build the elaborate puzzles, but do the dungeons? yes please).

Hm. I haven't had a moment where I have actually felt tortured... but maybe that means I'm not doing it right?

Ummmm I would do that in a friend's basement, but not a stranger's. *shudders*

I would probably only really do it if there were actual reviews of the experience online/it was presented almost as a business. Otherwise yeah, there's the risk of it being sketchy/disastrous.

I second that! Although as my bratlet stated, I would also love to dooooo it! Sounds like a blast! It would be great cosplay!

The kittens are two weeks old today! :)

I have been doing research on the cat side of the internet, and man...

I hope we can find good homes for them. They will stay with us until we do, and we won't let them go with any people we aren't 100% sure about, but it's just...the more I read, the more I think that people we could feel 100% sure about are going to be in short supply.

The dungeon thing actually sounds intriguing to me...

On the plus side, I think I finally have an idea for the topic... I will hopefully get a draft done at lunch and maybe post tonight... Wish me luck!

I second the no dungeons. I lobster up after 15 minutes in the sun, but that is still better than a dungeon.

We have this as a commercial thing in Dubai (based on ones in London). HintHunt and Challenge Chambers both let your group into a room with clues and a guide, and you have an hour to solve the mystery.

That sounds like fun! I think my hubby would be great with something like that - half the time he solves the mysteries on TV. For me, it would mostly depend on the Red Herrings screwing with me.

I hosted a few couchsurfers for free before AirBnB became a thing. I've been considering opening up to that sort of thing again in the future, but I can't at the moment because the house is full enough with people who aren't family as it is!

I think I'd heard of the puzzle/dungeon thing before (oddly, on a dating website). It sounds kind of cool but, as I have no sense of direction or spatial awareness, I suspect I'd be trapped in the dungeon for weeks.

I wonder what the rider is on the insurance policy about people getting injured in your dungeon basement as a part of this?

And a lot of people are starting to rent out space in their New York apartments because the rent continually is getting ratcheted up. It's why the city is slowly turning into nothing but Starbuck's, Chase banks, or Bank of America banks, or Citi Banks, and other massive corporate entities. We might eventually get that Wal-Mart, just because they'll be one of the few companies willing to pay 10,000 a minute per square foot to move in.

But aside from that, it's been a lovely summer!
