Trying to catch up with the news over the last couple of weeks.

I saw bits and pieces from facebook. But if that is to be believed, the only things that happened were the NFL suspending Ray Rice for only two days, Tony Dungy saying he wouldn't draft Michael Sam and the situation in Gaza. Well, and people talking about Darlena. :)

Other than that, I really didn't see much.

First true heatwave of the summer (31+ C all week and no end in sight).

Finally got word that my passport is back in the British visa application centre so I will know if I have a visa tomorrow (scary).

Did not start reading Idol entries until today. Head is already spinning with them. ^_^

The dog is finally getting better after we spayed her on Sunday.

Yes, there was a tornado in my area around this time yesterday (http://www.wcvb.com/weather/cleanup-under-way-after-ef2-tornado-rips-through-revere/27199892). Not in my immediate area, mind you, but just close enough to catch the prevailing tail winds which thankfully weren't capable of any real damage.

It is SO bizarre. This isn't tornado country. If there are any tornadoes, they're out in the western part of the state, aren't very big, and tend to die out quickly. There were a couple of serious injuries, but no fatalities, thank god. But the damage! The clip in the link doesn't show even half of it.

Suspect in teen kidnapping case arrested (http://www.wcvb.com/news/man-charged-in-teens-disappearance-heads-to-court/27199810). I think this made national news too. The family isn't saying anything else except that Abigal is reportedly "helping police with the details of her disappearance." Which I think is cool. Let her and her family have some privacy while dealing with this case.

Other than that, I just picked up my brand spanking newly-sharpened mower blade! The front yard is getting a bit too jungle-like for my taste :erk:

The family has only issued one statement AFAIK. Given the girl's age, I understand completely. It's like when Elizabeth Smart was found -- other than reporting that she was, and who kidnapped her, there was nary a peep from neither her nor her family until she was ready to talk about it publicly. Ditto the four girls held in that house for who-knows-how-many years.

I live approximately two gazillion kilometres from where you are, but we had similar ("tornado-like" according to TPTB) weather here yesterday and the day before, with houses destroyed and flash flooding and power outages...

All the news I've followed recently has been from comic-con, and there really wasn't even much actual news there! But I am totally excited for the fall season to start now.

Honestly - *I* wouldn't have drafted Michael Sam either.

His Combine scores weren't very good and until a few months ago, there was a reality show set to be filmed around him.

That's pretty much the definition of distraction.

Same reason I wouldn't draft a Tim Tebow or a "Johnny Football".

Heck, if I were a player, I wouldn't want to be on a team that signed up to do "Hard Knocks".

I think it's great that kids are going to be able to see someone who is openly gay that is playing professional football.

Based on his early reviews though, just not sure that they are going to see him actually start any time soon.

Ahhh, yes. Those are good reasons not to. I think the distraction factor is a large part of why the Texans didn't draft Manziel.

It's why a lot of people didn't touch Manziel. It takes a desperate team - like the Browns or the Rams - to decide "hey, this is worth the extra effort for the potential of some good PR".

There ARE some coaches that are able to take on projects. Jeff Fisher used to be one of them with the Titans, hopefully he will be able to do so with the Rams as well, and get some use out of Sam. (Although according to that second link they are already talking about who might take him once the Rams cut him in the pre-season.)
