Happy Birthday America!

Kind of. http://www.constitutionfacts.com/us-declaration-of-independence/fourth-of-july/

It's more of a "Happy Day We Selected From All the Possible Days To Say Is Your 'Birthday' America", but that's too big to put on a greeting card!

Why am I bringing that up?

During a discussion in yesterday's Green Room, it occurred to me how often it doesn't matter what is actually true, it matters what people *think* is the case!

(In this example, I'm sure the vast majority of people on the street couldn't say exactly what happened today and would go with one of the examples of what *didn't* happen used in that article)

I was specifically referencing a couple Second Amendment cases that have been in the news over the last few months, and the actual facts of the cases ended up being referenced. (In one case, people assume that Stand Your Ground was used - when it was considered openly as a possible defense, but never actually used)

It doesn't matter - because that thought was put in the public's head - it became a SYG case.

Someone is told Target doesn't want you carrying your assault rifles into their stores as part of the "see what we can do" small portion of the Open Carry movement - and suddenly Target is banning concealed weapons and wants to rip the Second Amendment out of the Constitution.

You see it with all kinds of things in the news. Pretty much everything really - how often people don't actually stop to look at facts but react with emotion, and how quickly it becomes something else entirely. Not just in the minds of those reacting - but the more people talk about it, the more that impression ends up getting lodged in the heads of people who are just skimming current events.

Such and such was disappointing.
This shouldn't have happened.

A couple voices, repeating themselves often enough, can end up making an impact. Sometimes for the better. Sometimes not so much.

***
What your voices "should be" repeating is that the new topic is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/754594.html

and there is a discussion going on in the Work Room about re-using and re-tooling entries: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/754830.html

We are also saying goodbye to those who left us with the previous vote: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/754200.html

***
Even if you're not an American - I hope you have a great weekend! :)

Because none of you are *truly* 'Mericans, and thus can not experience FREEDOM in it's truest form (aka living at my house), which means that all enjoyment is hollow anyway! Enjoy your hollow and ultimately meaningless weekend! :D

"Sit down, John. Sit down, John. For God's sake, John, sit down!"

We love watching 1776 every year at this time - it's a fun musical!

Hubby and I picked up a huge box of 20 mortars last night to take over to Minikin's house for the 4th of July cookout they are hosting. Each mortar when it goes off will have 1-3 blooms of fireworks (I think they are called breaks). It was expensive ($150) but Independence Day only comes once a year, Amirite?

I wish we were allowed to buy mortars. I can have all the guns and ammunition I want, but when it comes to fireworks, all we're allowed to have in Pennsylvania are these wimpy little sparkler fountains. :(

I've only seen 1776 once, but my bff loves it, so we're watching it this evening. It is entertaining!

I don't even know if fireworks are allowed in this city. I kinda hope so, 'cause I'm not going to a public show, and I'm hoping some of the people on this street do something. I'm not about to do it myself though -- you're braver than I am!

Well, I can tell you I DO understand the Supreme Court precedent on religious consideration to profit businesses - as did four of the justices - and it's as bad as people think. (Former legal assistant here, current journalist.) ;-)

Point of Clarification

Is there a new rule about commenting? Because my comment in the Work Room was deleted, and I'd like to know why.

Eta- and my "my comment" I mean the whole thread, so other people's replies as well. Just *poof*

I really hope that a) there is a satisfactory answer to this question and b) that you get that satisfactory answer.

I am very not ok with comments or conversations disappearing, for ANY reason that doesn't have to do with personal safety or legal issues.

This... this is upsetting. And that's an understatement.

Happy 4th you guys. Might as well make it happy 5th, 6th, etc. I'm fixing food and cleaning house. My neighbors are coming over later w wine and capresse (sp?) salad. I have BBQ chicken and red velvet cake for dessert. Oh, and potato salad.

JellyBean is hanging in there. She's not great, but today is not "the day".

I have read this post about 5 times today and each time I read that last paragraph as "Because none of you are *truly* Mexicans" I just thought it was some reference that went over my head. Haha.

I am so ready for it to be the weekend.

i'm sooooo over fireworks. I don't have a problem with my neighbors shooting off bottle rockets, firecrackers, the little stuff, but tonight has just been unreal with the amount of Disneyland worthy bombs going off. It was like the damn Blitz of London going off in my neighborhood. My dog is terrified, my cat is probably never coming out from under the bed until like Xmas.

Fireworks illegal in Los Angeles....but not really.

well I think fireworks should be illegal after midnight. Some of us actually want to sleep and can't. I am also stunned that I get to write for another week. I am so excited. I was sure I was done this week.
