We have the usual Day 1 recap of the previous evenings events!

There were results - but no eliminations. Instead, there were two people selected to receive special powers. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/751106.html

Both of them have contacted me now - and I can tell you that

[livejournal.com profile] mistearyusdiva2 now have two extra byes
and
[livejournal.com profile] binaryorchid is now in possession of the Black Mark!

The new topic was released: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/751386.html
and there was a Work Room posted for people to talk it out: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/751722.html

In other parts of the internet, there was also the reveal that the "kid kicked out of KFC" didn't actually happen.

I'm hoping for a story soon about how the guy in Texas who was told that hanging his American Flag on the railing of his apartment complex was "offensive to Muslims" didn't actually happen either. (The details there were even more fishy than the KFC ones)

That didn't stop people from rallying to either cause, contacting the businesses involved and raising a fuss over it.

Saying "If this is true, it's horrible" is one thing. The people who made threats over things like this need a lesson in perspective. The former are at least open to the idea that they don't have the information. The latter assume that they know everything and want vengeance. Usually because it has reinforced their idea of "how things are".

Personally, I think there are people who miss the ideas of lynch mobs, and anything they can use as an excuse to go after someone, they will latch onto it.

I thought that these days only Gary could form lynch mobs, and they were only to be used for kicking hippies?

Just to clarify, does [livejournal.com profile] mistearyusdiva2 have two extra byes or two extra immunities? The original post says Immunities, here it says Byes.

It's so easy to believe everything one reads on the internet as being true, isn't it?

I didn't hear about the Texas one, but it sounds like an America-flavored version of all those stories from the UK, where various folks were forced to remove St George's Cross flags as offensive to Muslims.

At least that makes some sort of thousand-years-out-of-date sense, as the SGC was a Crusade flag. For a given value of "sense".

Date: 2014-06-24 02:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hosticle-fifer.livejournal.com
OK, I just read the story, and it looks like management backpedaled to say it was a problem only because its location broke their ordinances. And they have a flag flying out front, so the original statement about it being "threatening" makes no sense.

All-in-all it's a rabble-rouser but otherwise a total non-story.

I suspect it might have been an overzealous condo association that prohibits hanging any flags or any banners - I have heard of many people having battles with those self-important petty bureaucrats over the years.
Which is why **I** could never live in an area with an "association" telling me what I can or can not or "must" do with my own property. (says the house that practices extreme holiday decorating)

I always wonder how much truth there is to those stories. Few years ago there was one big story going around about some campaign or poster or sticker or something with a dog on it in Scotland (was it Scotland?) and it offended Muslims so they had to get rid of it ... somebody did some digging and found out that no one complained. Not one person. It was a hoax story that somebody invented to make British Muslims look like they have a screw loose.

I suspect it has a lot to do with the fact that thinking outside of the way you see the world is very difficult and requires some humility, so it's easier to fall into the "this is the way the world is and THIS CONFIRMS IT" way of thinking.

I think with over 130 of us still in it, it's too early for Gatekeepers, but I've been wrong more often than not, LOL.

I suggested it might be a contestant only vote, where we can only vote for our Top XX number of entries, but again, it could be just a regular voting round, but possibly with more tribes or more of the bottom eliminated.

(ie: instead of two tribes, four tribes; or instead of the bottom one being eliminated, the bottom two; or any combination thereof).

Of course, one should ALWAYS attempt to bring your "A" game, just because You Never Know.

I think people are really good now at not being newsworthy through their own awfulness, so news sources often have to invent or look up new paragons of awfulness. Almost all of us have been duped, by now, into believing that at least a couple of major news stories are true.

But these are kind of like a "True" American Stories now. The telling reflects the cultural values.

Date: 2014-06-24 04:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] slammerkinbabe.livejournal.com
Wow, I’m really confused about the story with the guy with the flag. All the news stories seem more or less in concurrence about the details that are available -- he was asked to take the flag down, the property manager gave a printed statement about protecting the aesthetics *and safety* of the complex -- but they’re also all saying that other people have patriotic decorations up and no one asked them to remove them, so... what? I’m so lost. Do they all have patriotic decorations up that don’t feature the flag? Is it specifically the flag that they’re deeming a threat? Or is it the “aesthetics” bit? Like, the flag was too big or something? But the part about the flag being displayed in a “safe and appropriate manner elsewhere” would suggest it is the “safety” issue. So... WTF?! This is a bizarre story. And I hope it turns out to be better than it looks right now, because, man, if it's true that they think a US flag somehow constitutes a "threat to Muslims", that is crazy levels of not cool.

Righteous indignation: a quick easy goto that's almost always more satisfying than real fact gathering and analysis. At least in the short term, which is what certain parts of the internet are all about. Ugh.

From: [identity profile] slammerkinbabe.livejournal.com
Tumblr is THE WORST for that, omg. It’s the ultimate short-term site -- people see a thing on their dash, they reblog it if they like it (or are outraged by it), they go on to the next thing -- and the factual inaccuracy of the stuff that gets circulated there is stunning. When I first started spending time over there I was trying to fact-check the stuff that came across my dash that sounded not quite legit, and I seriously found like five things with major factual inaccuracies in 48 hours -- I mean, things that were several years outdated and were mostly untrue even when they originated, but were stacking up thousands of reblogs years later. It’s so frustrating that in certain parts of the Internet it never even seems to occur to people to fact-check. And of course the most outrageous stories are the most reblogged and also the most likely to be untrue. Such a pet peeve of mine. (/rant)

Oh hey, that apartment complex is right down the road from me! Reading the local news, which seems like a decent source, I have a sneaking suspicion it's the idiocy of that particular apartment manager. Because people can be very dumb. I would think it was just a matter of physical safety - don't hang things on the outside of your balcony - if not for her behavior. It's very weird.

Yeah, internet pile-ons often seem to be eerily reminiscent of lynch mobs. Often I will agree with the crowd, and not like what the offending person or business or whatever has done... but I don't like the way these things evolve, and the air of "get 'em!" often seems very brutal and unreasonable to me. Truth is a three edged sword, and all that. There's always more nuance to things than is easily seen from a summary or a news story.

I am starting my reading of topics since there are some out already and my goal for this week is to comment and read every single one.
Speaking of lynch mobs, Kate Kelley got excommunicated from the LDS church for wanting women to get ordained and since I agree with her, I have gotten quite the backlash on my facebook page. Honestly, one of these days I need to quit it and go back to my LJ days. Life is so much simpler without relatives reading my thoughts.

Maybe we could start tiny lynch mob parties, and let them go after each other -- sort of like extreme paintball without the paint. No weapons, everyone in protective gear, everyone signs a legal thing saying they can't sue if they die/are seriously injured....
