People are always talking about how there is "so much bad news in the world today", when actually there is just more time to fill and greater access to information than ever before, to fill it. Plus, "cat found in tree" isn't as interesting of a headline as "What did people do to cause cat to flee?????"

There IS one piece of good news out there though, that I personally haven't seen one negative comment about. (I'm SURE they are out there, it's the internet, but I personally haven't seen them*) The Reading Rainbow Kickstarter campaign raised over a MILLION DOLLARS IN 11 HOURS!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/readingrainbow/bring-reading-rainbow-back-for-every-child-everywh

Kids! Books! Kids reading books! Yay!

*and just like that, I went to find a link to the story, and here was this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2014/05/28/you-might-want-to-reconsider-that-donation-to-the-reading-rainbow-kickstarter/?wprss=rss_lifestyle

Ah, that's more like it. Thanks internet, you never disappoint!

How has the Internet managed to NOT disappoint YOU today?

***

Speaking of "never disappointing" - the Topic thread is slowly filling up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/741490.html and I DO mean "slowly". I expand deadlines to keep more people in, and more people simply find new ways to submit last minute. ;)

Also - there are still a few spots open in The Killing Floor: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/743022.html and of course, you should definitely be going there to offer constructive criticism.

I had a dream that I wrote my entry and then I woke up to find I hadn't even started. FUCK YOU, BRAIN.

In my dream, it was a good entry, too. But now that I'm trying to think back on it, it had to do with noodles and cartoons and factories and probably didn't really make coherent sense. Also I wrote it in pictures.

I am thiiiiiis much closer to getting the hell out from under my ex-wife. All I need is a cosigner in order to get approved for a home loan and I'm (mostly) set.

Also, my offer still stands. (http://theun4givables.livejournal.com/192209.html) :) There are still open slots available to anyone who should want to participate in Idol Season 9/want to come back into the fray. <3

The Internet hasn't had time to disappoint me yet today, but you never know!

I'm trying to read ahead of the polls; I've finished page one and a few random FL posts, so that's not bad. 10-1/2 hours to go, peeps! Get cracking - you can do it!!

I was very grateful for the extra time this week, I'm not sure I could have had something written by Monday. That said I have time to read today and am almost out of entries! Write and post people!!

Sadly while I'm able to read at work commenting is more difficult which means I have sucked at that so far this season. Commenting more in Idol is one of my June resolutions, along with get to yoga class on time and flossing.

Kids+Books=Yay!

I loved Reading Rainbow. I also loved Wishbone.

However, I get the point of that article. I do have to say that Between the Lions was awesome, too, and actually did teach reading. I know even my Daddy would stop and watch it when he had been flipping through channels.

Does anyone have another way to contact [livejournal.com profile] jem0000000? Her entry is locked, and she made mention in the topic post that she was traveling and wouldn't be checking in much for the weekend. I left a comment on a different entry, but if anyone has a non-LJ way of getting in touch with her that would be wonderful!

I'm intrigued by how the deadlines and the late responses affect the ways in which one can only approach reading and commenting. There is a leisureliness that is being lost by the flurry of last-day postings. It's too bad.

Unfortunately life gets in the way. These last few weeks my entries have been quite last minute because my studies have to come before an internet competition. I sat up until 2am to complete my final assignment last night in the hope that I would have a chance to write something decent for Idol tonight.

I think that Real Life should be banned, but there you go.

Gail Simone had a great discussion on twitter today about the importance of making kids *enjoy* reading when you're teaching them how to read. Because if you teach kids how to read but make them hate it, as apparently a lot of programs do, you've done them a serious disservice. I recommend checking out her feed for that discussion (as well as discussions of other things, including both terribly silly and really important stuff, and also comics because she writes some of the absolute best comics). @gailsimone

The real challenge is not getting kids to read "a little bit." It's getting them to be fluent, and the best way to do that is to make them WANT to read. Duh, and double-duh.

That Washington Post article completely misses the point, but how is that new? :O

The Internet has not 'wowed' me yet today, but there's still time. I'm sure there's a cat macro out there with my name on it, somewhere. :D

half the fun of submitting is seeing if I can make the deadline, I have a feeling the one week I get something in early will be the week I get voted out... that is if I don't get voted off this week.

I just returned from my out of town trip, where the only news I got was whether or not Mickey Mouse was going to be in Fantasyland. I left as #yesallwomen was gathering steam, but missed (wifi is painfully slow at the 'Happiest Place on Earth') news of Maya Angelou's passing and the RR kickstarter.

I've got mixed feelings about the kickstarter. I'm not thrilled at what was once a non profit program suddenly becoming a 'for profit' program. Those of us who are encouraging our kids to read and love books have a lot of programs at our fingertips that do just that. Some of those programs and apps are even free.

As a teacher, I've always felt that education should not be exclusive. This program sounds like it will be though. Maybe I'm wrong.

Kate had a no good very bad day.
Kate needs liquor.

The best thing that happened today? That video that's going around with the cat who plays Jenga. That's what the internet did for me.

The entries I have read so far this week are not disappointing! But I am disappointed in myself. I meant to participate in green rooms throughout the week this week- and. . . total failboat. That's way easier than the fifty comment challenge. But I haven't done it. Read and lurk, yes. Comment, no. Hopefully I will do better in the future.
